Summary: Impartial observer?
Insightful, moving, if not inspiring. My one qualm with the book is its fiction novel format, in which the author is an omnipotent third person narrator. I think the book would be more effective if her relationship to each person in the family was more obvious in the text, and her mention in the epilogue (I believe) that she did her best to remain an impartial observer who did not meddle in the family affairs but merely transcribed them seemed unbelievably cruel given the circumstances of the youngest daughter. It seems inhumane of the author to not have exerted some influence in order to ensure the girl have some chance at a happy life, but instead--for the sake of science! control!--she allowed the girl's opportunity at a decent husband slip by with nary a whisper.
Summary: A cultural eye-opener
The lives of average Afghanis have been unbearable for decades with all the various countries and religions that have overtaken them. This author spent time with a family and really got "behind the scenes" to create a portrait of desperation and humiliation, as well as cruelty. A well-told recollection of events and cultural change in Afghanistan -- something we all need to know.
Summary: grateful to live in the Western world
This book gives a brief glimpse into the life of a well-off family in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban. I read with disbelief the role that women play within the society. The burka is just the beginning. It seems that if women were not needed to perpetuate the species, they would be eliminated totally. The Islamic laws that are quoted in the book seem fair and good; however, the way that they are administered is frightening.

One particular young woman in the book haunted me. She was a virtual slave to her family, cooking and cleaning for everyone in the household of 13 people. She is lowest in the social hierarchy in the household. A young man begins to show an interest in her becoming his wife (based on having a glimpse of her in public and knowledge of her family). He is one of 4 men who are interested in her. She weighs all her prospects in terms of how the remainder of her life will be with the husband her uncle chooses for her. She looks at who is the lesser of all evils and life with the young man looks to her as a possible escape from the drudgery of this life. She begins to know what it feels like to hope. He questions her about what her response will be if he proposes. She is not at liberty to answer him. He asks her what she wants. Her response is that she cannot have a desire. He asks if she likes him. She responds that her family will decide whether she likes him or not. Complete obedience is her fate.

Summary: Best Arabic Text out there!
If I could give this book more than five stars, I would! After dealing with the pain of Al-Kitaab for years, I was relieved when I began studying out of this book. All of the major authors in the Arab world are featured inside: Nizar Qabbani, Mahmoud Darwish, Imru al-Quais, Ibn Khaldoun, etc. It is perfect for the upper-intermediate/advanced Arabic student.
Summary: Indispensable
Dr. Bassam Frangieh's Anthology of Arabic Literature, Culture, and Thought is an indispensable tool for the advanced student of Arabic. Since the advanced student expects to be able to converse with educated Arabs, he or she must be familiar with all the great names of classical Arabic literature and, with very few exceptions, the names with representative texts are all here: Imru' al-Qays, Ibn al-Muqaffa (whose "Kalila wa Dimna" is a brilliant marriage of Machiavelli's "The Prince" and "Aesop's Fables"), Al-Jahiz, Ibn Jinni, Abu Nuwas, Al-Mutanabbi, Ibn Rushd, Ibn Sina, Al-Hallaj, al-Ghazali, Ibn Taymiyya, and Ibn Khaldun. More importantly, Dr. Frangieh has devoted almost half of the book to modern Arab poets, novelists, and critics. Any student conditioned to seeing the Arab-Islamic world through the lens of 9-11 and the issues of radical or political Islam will find enlightening and refreshing the selections by Adonis, Hisham Shirabi, Sadiq Jalal al-`Azm and their respective secular critiques of Arab society. Mahmud Amin al'Alim's "The Arabic Novel" and Idwar Kharrat's "Three Faces of Ghalib Halasah" will provide the student whose native language is English with exemplary models of the modern, expository styles of Arabic expression. Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of this collection is the heightened sense the student gains of the expressive and metaphorical potential of Arabic. For the student accustomed to associating the "poetic" in Arabic with the rich and florid classical style, Nizar Qabbani's "Arabian Love Poems" will introduce the student to the poet's modern metaphorical style that in a sense recaptured the secret of Abu Nuwas-that metaphysical and abstract truths are best expressed through creative juxtapositions of the immediate and sensible. All the selections in Dr. Frangieh's anthology are no more than 4-5 pages, easily readable in an evening's study, and will send the reader running to find the originals.
Summary: What Teachers of Arabic Need
To a student who has used in one form or another the Elementary Modern Standard Arabic book for more than 2 years, and who appreciates its usefulness as a grammar book, it simply cannot rival Frangieh's new book in terms of sheer challenge and enjoyment. Frangieh seeks to inform the reader not only of the language, but of literary works that have been pivotal in Arab culture. The works chosen span an inredible range in time and style, include the modern novel, as well as pre-Islamic poetry, and energize the reader with its invitation to discover the deftness and clarity of some of the language's most accomplished authors.

Summary: Very brief and easy read: Worth it.
A small book, one volume in a larger series of studies of world civilazations published by Alfred A. Knopf. The book is sadly short and very brief; nevertheless, it is a helpful, clearly conveyed essay on the inner-workings of the Ottoman Empire, touching on its roots in Islamic traditions of government.

This book is not helpful as a history: it runs through, in very general terms, the history of the Ottoman Empire only for a background understanding of what was happening on the broader scope. This book is for those that know the history pretty well and want a definite understanding of the government hierarchy, the workings of the ulema, and the meaning of the ghazi tradition.

Norman Itzkowitz is a great scholar, and this study details perfectly how the Ottoman's owed their initial success to Islamic traditions, but also owed its subsequent stagnation and decay to the inherent reactionary elements of Islam.

Well worth the read: unfortunately, the book covers only up to the reign of Selim III (the Inspired), and thus stops right before the reform era. This is understandable, since such an addition would probably entail doubling the size of the book; still, without a look into the last, turbulent century of the Ottomans, it feels incomplete.

Summary: Simple Introduction to Ottoman Civilization
This is a concise study of Ottoman culture, society and the Ottoman administrative system. The Ottoman Empire, which lasted for 700 years and included three continents, is an important but often excluded ingredient in world history. This empire should be seen like its shorter lived sister-states (Mughal India and Safavid Iran) as a descendent of the Turco-Mongol steppe tradition under which Central Asia was unified and which created the first modern, large-scale, integrated, long-distance, old-world trading system.

The book begins with several brief chapters that outline Ottoman political history while the remaninder of the book provides an overvew of Ottoman institutions.

The volume, which includes a map, chronology, glossary, and index, is very easy reading. It could be used as part of a case study comparing the Ottoman Empire with other imperial systems. A must read for anyone interested in history who has never ventured beyond Western Europe or Russia while in their armchair. This book will provide a very different perspective on European political/diplomatic history.

Summary: Supplicatory Prayer
Bismillah~ This volume of the Ihya `Ulum al-Din covers dhikr and du`a; times, formulas, inner states & other considerations for invocations and remembrance of Allah and for supplicatory prayer.

It should be noted that where the editorial description refers to 'prayer', this refers to supplication or intorcessory prayer, not the corporeal-spiritual worship Muslims engage in five times each day. The Salah is most usually translated as 'the prayer'.

Summary: Excellent, cross-cultural Anthropological Study of Islam
This is a classic work on Islam from an anthropological perspective written by a great anthropologist. Essentially it works because it has a gimick--being that it focuses on Islam in two cultures that are vastly different from one another. Indonesia and Morroco are at oppossite pole of the 'Islamic World' and the practice of Islam in each respective country are even farther apart, in the traditional sense. Geertz shows that while these two cultural manifestations of Islam may seem infinitely divergent from one another, they are nonetheless connected and complimentary. While this book now shows its age and has its weaknesses, it's short and contains many insights that make it an enjoyable read. It makes for a good partner to engage within scholarly dialogue while at the same is and equally good partner for casual reading for those with just a general interest in Islam as a cultural phenomenon.
