Summary: Geat History Great Story
Philbrick studiously relays an obviously well-researched tale of the Whale Ship Essex. This story in the 1800s was an inspiration for Melville to write Moby Dick. I think he (Philbrick) does a great job of finding the right balance of historical perspective, biography of those involved, technical aspects of the whaling business, and the human interst of the tale itself. It is an enlightening read which becomes a real page turner. I read this book and Da Vinci Code in the same summer. This book is better. It is far more interesting and held my interest and never let go which could in par be because I find tales of real life to be always more inspiring/interesting than fiction.
Summary: Philbrick makes fact read like fiction.
My first introduction to Nathaniel Philbrick was this particular book, IN THE HEART OF THE SEA, which I bought over three years ago and kept it in my "to be read soon" stack. After hearing the recent reviews of Philbrick's latest, MAYFLOWER, also in my "stack," I pulled out IN THE HEART OF THE SEA and decided to read it. To say that I felt idiotic for not reading it sooner would be an understatement.

Many authors of factual-based books, regardless genre, don't have the touch to make non-fiction readable. (I noted with a chuckle the high school/college student who reviewed HEART OF THE SEA, and indicated how boring and dry it was...well, it was a class requirement, so of course it is boring and dry.) My opinion is diametrically opposed. There are a few authors that bring non-fiction to life: Roger Lowenstein (in business), Kurt Eichenwald (in business tales), David McCullough (in history), and, of course, the late Stephen Ambrose (in history). Philbrick can now be added to that list. While he doesn't present presumed dialogue like Eichenwald, Philbrick brings the story to life with titillating detail and gusto.

HEART OF THE SEA introduces readers to the island of Nantucket in the early 1800s, where whaling was the primary, if not only, industry of any import to the islanders. At that time in history, Nantucket was considered the whaling "capital." Philbrick introduces the readers to the customs of whaleships, the ranks of the seamen, and the incredible journeys a typical whaleship made. Each journey, with little variation, took the seamen from their Nantucket familes for periods as long as three years. Upon return, they might only be with their families for a few months before the next voyage. However, given the dire need for oil provided by the sperm whale, and the riches it brought on the open market, this was a standard and fully accepted custom, not only by the seamen, but their families as well.

The story within the story provided the basis for one of the great works of literature of all time; Melville's MOBY DICK. Philbrick indicates that Melville was ardent, and somewhat transfixed, by the story of the Essex, and its ulimate plight. Of course, MOBY DICK is a work of fiction, but it is centered in fact...that being the tale of the Essex.

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA revolves around the whaleship Essex, which set sail for the last time in 1819 in search of sperm whales. Now, think about this: the whale hunt was to take place in the Pacific. The Essex had to sail from Nantucket (think Boston) in the Atlantic, around Cape Horn (the southern tip of South America), and then back north to the whaling grounds of the Pacific. No wonder these voyages took years! The Essex had a number of "events" occur before making it to the South Pacific, which, in hindsight, should have given the crew a hint that this, indeed, could be an ill-fated voyage. After having some decent luck in their search for whales on their way to the whaling grounds, an extraordinary and unprecedented event took place while the Essex's latitude was approximately the Equator. The Essex was rammed by an eighty-five foot sperm whale, twice, which sent the 228-ton whaleship to it's death in the Pacific. The crew, numbering 20, took the three available lifeboats, called whaleboats, and began pondering how they were going to survive, literally, in the middle of the Pacific, thousands of miles from any known civilization. While the crew was able to save some food and fresh water prior to the Essex going under, most knew it wasn't enough to make it. Their ultimate journey from the death of the Essex to rescue was filled with hope, dispair, and human behavior none of the seamen thought they'd ever consider or engage in. This journey is heartwrenching and fantastic.

Philbrick has put together an incredibly vivid tale bringing to life the tibulations facing each of the seamen of the Essex. Philbrick has given enough, but not too much, information on whaling, sperm whales, 19th century industry, and the culture of a seamen and whaleships to give the reader a firm grasp of the time without becoming inudated with minutiae. IN THE HEART OF THE SEA is an outstanding effort by a very talented author.
Summary: It's a "Can't put it down" book
Amazing account of the whaleship 'Essex' . Also an interesting history of the whaling industry itself. Hard to put this one down, though, so make sure you've got your life caught up before you start reading!

Summary: A great look at piracy
If you're looking to learn more on what real pirates were (most likely you were inspired by the POTC films), then this book is a great place to start. Cordingly very clearly and precisely seperates the truth from the romanticized fiction we all grew to ponder. It's quite an adventerous book that can be as exciting as a fictional film. It is well researched, too. I would suggest that children not read this nor any history book on piracy, however, because real piracy has a very violent and graphic image. They are not these Johnny Depp heroes that we see on the screen, they are far from it. None the less, this is a great book to start your own research on a great age of maritime history.
Summary: <<Under The Black Flag>>
David Cordingly's all-inclusive history of piracy covers the phenomenon from the earliest days of sail until today, and gives us an overview not only of the famous pirates of the Caribbean but of corsairs in the Mediterranean and the vast fleets of pirates in the South China Sea.

By default, Cordingly does spend most of his time along the western shores of the Atlantic, and he is indefatigable in tracking and tracing the histories of some of the best-known pirates such as Blackbeard and Captain Kidd. He also spends time reviewing the great pirate books and films (the more recent Johnny Depp vehicles post-date this book).

Cordingly, a curator of paintings at the British National Maritime Museum, has studied this subject exhaustively and is excellent in his reportage of details.

However, UNDER THE BLACK FLAG lacks color. The reader is invited to observe piracy at a distance through a spyglass but never finds himself on the heaving deck of a pirate schooner under sail with a whiff of grapeshot in his nostrils. The tang of the salt-sea air is missing. This is a competent, very well written but fairly straightforward treatise. Still, as any sailor will tell you, the romance and spirit of the sea is the true siren, and Cordingly's book, though well done, never captures that spirit.
Summary: Avast ye Landlubbers!
David Cordingly's work "Under The Black Flag (The Romance and the Reality of Life Among the Pirates)," is a wonderful treatise covering the life of Caribbean Pirates during the 17th through 19th Centuries. At less than <300 pages the text is a fast paced yet thoughtful read repleat with black and white plates, an informative glossary and appendices designed to give the reader an understanding of "a pirates life" in a survey style manner. I rate it at five stars because, well...everyone loves pirates!

Summary: Good book Bad shipping
My dad said he liked the book but when I ordered it Amazon said it would be delivered before fathers day. About two weeks later it showed up. I won't be ordering time sensitive books in the future...
Summary: Sleeping with what fishes?
Bruce Knecht has give us unique vantage point from which we can trace the corrupt supply chains of the fishing industry and empowered us to intelligently anticipate the commercial extinction of marine species around the globe. Chronicling extraordinary attempts to enforce poaching regulations, Knecht has given us crystal clear insight into a horrific consequence of unchecked market forces. Technology and globalization have likened fishing in the "Common" areas of the oceans to fighting for dollar bills on a public sidewalk. We live in an age that is witnessing the collapse of Marine ecosystems from both the top and bottom of the food chain simultaneously.

Although the harsh realities of ecological destruction are unpalatable to a large percentage of the world population, (and they are certainly well documented here) "Hooked" includes enough real life drama to capture the attention of most anyone. I would strongly urge that "large percentage" to read this book in the hopes it might help mitigate the unfortunately prevalent resistance to responsibly managing our marine resources. At the very least, reading this book will make you hesitate the next time you choose which fish you might like for dinner.
Summary: A real life chase
In this book, Knecht tells the story of a fisheries patrol boat that chases a suspected poacher halfway around the world. Intersperced with the story of the chase vessel and the multinational effort to stop and board the trawler, the author gives the story of the patagonian toothfish (Chilean Sea Bass) from it's introduction as a commercial fish in the early 80's to now. Good coverage is also given to the two trials that result.

Summary: Worth the Doubloons
This is a collection of three Osprey books, so you need to think in terms of an adult version of the Eyewitness picture books. You shouldn't expect an exhaustively comprehensive treatment of the subject matters, after all each book tends to be only 1/4 inch thick.

So, with expectations aligned, this collection includes Buccaneers 1620-1700, Pirates 1660-1730 and Privateers and Pirates 1730-1830. There are quite a few pictures to compliment the text, including maps, wood cuts and those provided by Angus McBride.

In Buccaneers the topics covered include their origins, attire, weapons, ships, havens and tactics. Konstam gives us some brief biographies of a few of the famous names like Morgan, Myngs, Nau, Grammont and de Graaf.

In Pirates the topics covered include their origins, dress, tactics, flags, ports and ships. Konstam gives us some brief biographies of a few of the famous names like Teach, Bonny, Reade, Rackam, Vane, Every, Bonnet, Kidd and the Dread Pirate Roberts.

In Privateers the topics covered include their origins, methods, ports and ships. Konstam gives us some brief biographies of a few of the famous names like Haraden, Talbot, Jones, Surcouf, Boyle, Laffite, de Soto and Gibert.

An excellent collection of overviews suitable for adolescents and adults, for more on piracy through the ages I suggest Konstam's The History of Pirates.

Summary: A very well rounded review of pirate biographies
This book is heavy on the illustrations. That being said, it is NOT necessarily light on information.

In particular, I was VERY pleased with how well balanced the very subject of pirate biographies was treated. There are sections of the book dedicated to each major geographical region, as well as to different time periods.

It lightly glosses over the subjects of ships, weaponry, practices, flags, and strongholds (for better coverage of these things, try Benerson Little's Sea Rover's Practice), but gives a great deal of general biographical information on many different famous pirates from the Indian Ocean, Far East, Caribbean, and even on back into the "Ancient World."

For general reference in a well-balanced delivery, with plenty of attention given to other-than-Caribbean and other-than-late-17th-century piracy, I recommend no other book more.
Summary: A powerful visual impact
Angus Konstam's HISTORY OF PIRATES uses works from the Mariners' Museum in Virginia to provide a powerful visual impact. Piracy from ancient to modern times is surveyed in a series of maps, images, and discussions that cover specific events, regions, and pirates. Plenty of historical and political background to the events place each in perspective and provide an excellent survey of mariner events of the times. There are other pirate histories on the market - but none with the commitment to visuals of HISTORY OF PIRATES.

Summary: Arrr! Fascinating!
Well, mateys...This book has no intention to kill your stereotypes (AVAST!). Burried treasures? Parrots? Hooks? Everything you've heard about existed in the real world of piracy in some form.
As a base. As a reference material. As a historical work. "The History of Pirates" is something you can either consult to receive INFORMATION, or read in the light of a lamp, drinking OLD whisky/rum as a book of adventures.
In for enriching your mind? In for quality organization of an encyclopedia and magnetism of a novel? This is your chance. Bravo, Angus. Bravo!

Summary: Saved by Captain Johnson?
If you are a fan of Defoe and want to read about pyrates and their cutlasses then this is the book you need. It was published under the name of Captain Charles Johnson, no doubt to protect its author from the retaliation of ones such as Captain Avery - then in England - whose case the book deals with first. Avery had had a play written about (or by) him called The Successful Pirate, and a book called The King of the Pirates, and A General History of the Pyrates is a scathing attack against their pretentions. Because of his history as a pirate Avery would not have been able to visit the naval records office to check up on his adversary, hence the security and reason presumably for the name. Subsequent research in the naval records have shown that no such fish as Captain Charles Johnson had existed. His name is fictional.

The American Defoe scholar John Robert Moore identified it as being Defoe's and it certainly adds to his tally of great works.

Summary: General History of Pyrates
As to the author of this book, I personally do not believe it was Daniel Defoe and I have done a certain amount of research on the subject. There is no evedence supporting the theory that I can see, besides one man's idea, which proves nothing. The mysterious Captain Johnson is himslef the author, and none else.
To the book itself, I found it very informitive and would reccomend it to anyone interested in pirates. Though I have to mention it took me a while to get used to the style of writing, and I found it lacking in dates in some cases. But all in all a very informitive book and I very much enjoyed it.
Summary: Fast fun reading
This book contains short biographies of pirates. It was first published in 1724, but these stories read fast despite the antiquated language. The biographies focus on the most interesting parts of each pirate's life instead of dry facts. There are plenty of more "serious" facts here, but the biography goes into more detail just when the reader is getting curious. So we are told any interesting anecdotes about each pirate in the course of reading their biographies.

For example the biography of Anne Bonny tells about her life and exploits as a pirate. But we also are treated to a description of the bedroom farce by which Anne's mother, a household servant, was discovered by the lady of the house to be having an affair with the man of the house. She caught the maid accidentally because of a prank involving spoons hidden in the bed sheets. This event doesn't take place during Anne's life. (It involves her conception, and leads into why her father left for the New World.) But really we are told about it because it is a good entertaining story.

So this book is highly readable and entertaining despite the language. This is a good book for you if you are into pirates, history, or the adventure genre (this book is factual, but it inspired many fictions).

Summary: This book changed my life...
This is probably a lousy way to be taken seriously, but the story is so compelling, and the problem-solving methods are so powerful, that I can truly say that it had an impact on my life. I feel that Tommy (the protagonist) will be compared to Edwin Land and David Packard for his ability to get bright people together to solve intractible problems. While my wife had a hard time getting through the engineering and marine challenges that the book explains, she was impressed by the perserverence of the key players and the magnitude of the task that they took on. I have recommended this book to many of my fellow professional associates, and they have all benefitted from reading it.

Highly recommended!
Summary: A curious mix of history, science and adventure that works.
Ship of Gold begins by taking you back to 1857 with a colorful narrative account of being aboard the steamer SS Central America leaving Havana for New York. From there, the book skillfully covers a ton of diverse ground. As the reader, you are treated to (deep breath here) a history of the California Gold Rush, a lesson in the haphazard approach used by most shipwreck hunters, insights into the mind of a truly unique genius, a very well-researched account of the sinking of the Central America that puts you aboard the ship as it goes down, a schooling in the difficulties of accomplishing work in very deep water and a schooling in the cut-throat business of treasure-hunting on the open ocean. (Breathe out)

All of this is mixed together well and served up with some international salvage law and a helping of sonar technology for good measure. In the end, you get a really engaging and informative book.

So what makes this a four-star, rather than five-star, read? Without giving too much away, 90% of the story gets told in the final 10% of pages. As a Star Trek fan, I always laughed at how the crew would always get themselves into a seemingly impossible situation that showed no hope of reversal even as you approached the point of just five minutes remaining in the episode; then, all of a sudden, something would happen and the whole thing would be worked out by the time the credits rolled. This book's pacing absolutely reminded me of that pattern. It almost felt like Kinder intended for the book to be another 200 pages but got tired of writing (he says it was a very long project) and just decided to wrap things up and move on with his life.

As bad as that might sound, it doesn't detract much from what is a very good, informative and readable true story. Highly recommended.
Summary: The best book I've ever read...
All I can say is this is the best book I've ever read!! It has all the elements of a great novel but the fact that it is a true story just cements the fact that it is a great read!! I have to say, I was skeptical at first and I started just reading a few pages here and there, but once into the book I couldn't put it down. Since then, I have passed it on to my son's teachers, my friends, my family, and anyone who will read it. If you think you don't like non-fiction, think again and give it a try....
