Summary: yaaaaaaaaaaawn
this book isn't awful but i'm giving it one star to bring it down to a proper average of 2.5 stars. do real 'fables' contain taglines that declare themselves "a fable about ...ing your own ...."? i don't think so. what if aesop had titled his work "aesop's fables: how to live a happier/healthier/more enlightened life"? sounds pretty absurd, doesn't it?

this book is just one more on a long list of watery eastern mystical philosophy-meets-western self-improvement books. nothing terribly offensive or interesting here because there is nothing new here either. unless you're the kind of person that doesn't read.
Summary: A good read but somewhat over-rated
A readable fable of a shepherd boy, Santiago's journey of self-discovery. The book begins with some promise - it is quite easy to relate to the main character and some of his experiences. The character of Santiago is developed well and I felt most readers would be able to empathise with him easily.

Toward the end of the journey however, the author lost me somewhat with some confusing events/ metaphors. In the context of the book it appeared to me as though the author had reached some point on the journey which he had not experienced himself or could not adequately express his experience with the consistent simplicity of the rest of the book. To me it seemed like he decided to throw in a bit of chaos to cover this up which was disappointing.

The story as a whole and the driving concept of the book .. i.e. to follow your dreams certainly comes through regardless and overall it is enjoyable... I cannot help but feel though that something is lacking.
Summary: For those beginning their spiritual journey
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho will inspire you. it will encourage. It will give you solace.

A lovely fable of a young shepherd boy's journey to find his treasure, the reader is introduced to several pivotal characters that lead the young boy on his way. Revealing truth, teaching wisdom and inspiring greatness, each one shows the boy how to find his soul.

A touching, multilayered book, Coelho weaves a rich tale full of allusions to biblical passages and spiritual symbolism.

Anyone trying to make their way in this world full of mysteries will enjoy the hints that Coelho gives.

Summary: Great book, contrary to what some over-analytical people say!
I was truly shocked to see the feedback rating for this book!
I first read this book 7 years ago. It was a very tough time, and it had a large impact on my life. It gave me a new way of looking at the world around me at a time in which I really needed it.
There are a few idiots that dismiss the book entirely, and as mentioned by a prior feedback, those are the negative people that the book refers to. The rest of negative feedback is by people who acknowledge the importance and greatness of the underlying message in the book (the insights), but harp on how "poorly" it is written. Those people must be your average too-good for everyone else, elite, literary type. Take this book for the meaning and spiritual wisdom it contains, and ignore the people that are proofreading it like it is a dissertation for an English phd degree.
It changed my life, and it can for you too. In a world that has so much negative news everyday, it is great to find a read that lifts you back up. This book can either supplement some people's conventional religious thinking/beliefs, or offer others a possible alternative to traditional thinking and seems to help make life just make sense.
Summary: Crackpot pseudoscience
See page 97 for Redfield's lyrically written insight into how he can see a quarter moon on his side of the earth while folks on the other side of the earth see a full moon. You'd think that someone who believes in astrology would at least get his basic astronomy right, but I suppose nonsense begets nonsense.
Summary: Typical 90s
Nowadays a book like this wouldn't sell the way it did back then, but in the spiritual "feeling" era that was the 90s it did. The book is not bad though, although it's very new age, pretentious and bombastic.

Summary: Water, Water Everywhere
Oh, my gosh! He found that crystals formed in frozen water reveal changes when words and thoughts are directed towards them. Loving words show brilliant patterns and water exposed to negative thoughts form incomplete, malformed, asymetrical, fragmented, dull patterns. Since our bodies are made up of 70 percent water, this has a health effect. Just like ripples in a stream go forth, so does water in our bodies affect personal health and possible global renewal. The message is: water remains pure when it is moving. Keep your emotions moving, changing, flowing. Vibrations of good words have a positive effect and bad has the power to destroy. Water is amazing; it is a life force and transporter of energy. It dissolves, cleans, cooks, washes...
Summary: The Soul
This book is inspirational and provides one piece of the puzzle of the mystery of life. I read it just after finishing "The Divine Code" by Kazuo Murakami. Both books conclude that the secret to a more healthy and happy life is positive thinking and gratitude. There are thousands of more complex spiritual books available, but if you are limited in time, I recommend this book to give your life more meaning.

A concept presented by Emoto with which I disagree is that our soul is contained in water. I just finished a book with a much more compelling concept of the soul called "This Side of the Gate" by John P. Johnston. I read it along with Murakami's and Emoto's books. Johnston's book is by far the most intriguing and thought-provoking. Just what is the soul? Without going "Ken Wilbur" on us, Johnston presents insights into the soul, karma, and reincarnation which complements the other two books. I recommend reading all three books concurrently.
Summary: Incredible book!
Literally incredible. I mean it lacks a scintilla of credibility. How far does someone have to go with wild, speculative, unsupportable, obviously illogical theories before every human being, even the most gullible, would say "do you think . . . nahh!" Clearly we as a people are desperate to find meaning, even if we have to impose the most inane theory imaginable on our world. And how convenient that it asks so little of us: Look! We're already mostly water! That alone makes us deep! Please, people: get a grip! We have real problems to address that won't be fixed by feeling all gooey about being all wet.

Summary: A MUST for Energy Workers
Anyone working in holistic healing in regard to energy work will benefit greatly from this "classic" reference in their library. Just the pictures alone are enough to learn from. This is a "must have" for all energy workers.
Summary: Excellent tutorial
The author of this book is an amazing healer. There are not many like her in this world and her book is on my number one list of recommendations for anyone who wants to learn energetic healing. I use her techniques in my healing classes. I have a great respect for her work even though I have never met her!
I wouldn't recommend this to anyone new to energetic healing. I feel a new student should study the chakras first, perhaps some hands on healing methods, such as quantum touch, before reading this book as it can get a bit technical for the beginner, however, once the student has an understanding of the aura and chakras and how to use them to heal, this book will take the practitioner to new heights of healing they couldn't get any other way. It may be the only method out there that shows you the psychological energy patterns of an individual.
Also, it can be referenced time and time again.
Summary: Deepen your self-knowledge
I first read this book many years ago and it is one of the few I keep in my library. It has excellent information about energy healing. I especially learned a lot from the descriptions and information about the personality types. Most books address types in terms of psychology only, but this book adds the spiritual and energetic dimensions. Hands of Light greatly deepened my self-knowledge and helped me understand others better as well. An important book for spiritual awareness.

Summary: !!!FASCINATING!!!
I love this book!!! It is so fabulous and delicious and I just couldn't put it down. I found myself thinking about it at work when I wasnt' reading it. It really made me think!!! He talks a lot about psychelics too which are of a very high interest to me. Very fascinating stuff in there. I highly reccomend it!!! Daniel P. is a smart man who has had some absolutely amazing experiences!!! This is one of the best books I've ever read and I've read 100's of them!!!
Summary: Note-card mania

This is less of a book and more of a collection of note cards thrown into the air and then randomly assembled. Sometimes the reader gets a run of a few pages that seem linked, yet in other places Pinchbeck goes from topic to topic in a matter of paragraphs or within one paragraph itself. On pages 52-53 he goes from maya to Relativity Theory to enlightenment to psychic phenomena to synchronicity. Sounds good if you do justice to each of those topics, but not if you are just throwing them out there because they all sound good together.

His propensity for generalizing is rampant with such things as "according to Eastern thought" (cause we all know Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism are really of one mind). These generalizations turn scary whenever he broaches the topic of women. His anger and bitterness towards women (p.356) is obviously based on personal history, but he tries to couch it in cosmic terms. He also rails against monogamy, but his argument seems to be that monogamy is getting in the way of him having sex with whomever he wants (seriously). At one points he has the arrogance to write, "if women want to do the work of integrating their shadows" (p. 328), as if there are not legions of women out there doing it to a degree he can't begin to approach himself.

In places where he writes on his work with plant medicine (p. 254 -260), he seems to hit his stride and some of his best reflections come out. It seems as if the constraint of keeping to a story, however briefly, does him a world of good in regards to being coherent. It's always good to hear the plants speak, even if through such a shaky scribe.

I could go on about such things as Pinchbeck suggesting we deal with the issue of alien visitors by applying the nondual perspective of Dzogchen (as usual, there may be something in there, but not the way he slaps them together), but I will stop here. My suggestion is to give it a good 10 - 20 pages of reading in a bookstore before buying it, as I suspect people will have widely varying reactions (hence the differing reviews). Cheers.

Summary: Fascinating book!
Mr. Pinchbeck enlightens the seeker with profound insights and his shared personal experiences while researching this book. I think this book was partly written for the author's healing too. Which only adds to the interest. My only issue is the use of the occasional bizarre word in a normal sentence. I don't have the book in front of me right now to give you an example. If you want to ask me, let me know!

Other than that, I really loved how he tied in crop circles, the Maya, and his shamanic experiences in exotic locales (I sure hope he had his shots)! to try to reveal to us the elusive proof that indeed, there is much more to our reality than meets the eye. And that is our hope.

Summary: masterpiece
I agree. This book is a masterpiece of metaphor and allegory. Read the story, and then read the symbolism.
Summary: Fabulous does not begin to describe it.
A few months ago, I was looking through Amazon for something, anything to read. Lucky me, I happened across this book. This book has a message to send, and does a very good job at it through the use of allegorical story telling, similes, and quite acute observations into the behavior of humans. Tony Vigorito does a fantastic job of presenting us with ideas very throroughly researched, then applies them quite specifically to the story told. Upon finishing this book, one is left with a feeling optimism that stays for quite some time.
The only flaw to be found with this book (and it is a minor one) is the fact that the plot does not develop for some time. Instead, the reader is presented with a backstory about the narrator's friends, which offers great insight into their character and personality.
All in all, this book is fantastic. If you enjoy being presented with interesting, new ideas, as well as having a good laugh, this is for you. The book may be about the apocolypse, but I've never read anything about the apocolypse presented in such an optimistic manner. Absolutely fantastic.
Summary: Terrific and entertaining ride to a wonderful apocalypse
I loved this book. I thought it was stupendous. The writing is great, a definite joy for those who love words. I could not put this book down, and carried it with me everywhere I went for about three days while I read it. The characters are so entertaining, particularly the bad guys, you just want to know what happens to them next.

There's some very interesting views on the ultimate evolution of human communication. But it's the characters that steal the story. You have to love the personification of a heartless military industrial complex personified in the General. The political, self -aggrandizing, money hungry academia is there represented by University head Tynee. And the rotten stench of self serving, all controlling, old money surprisingly the form of chain smoking horrible old bossy woman. You will love these characters. Entertaining, thoughtful, and beautifully written, this is a great book.

Summary: Lots of Fearful People writing above . . .
Very funny to this one new age, tree-hugging, sensitive, spiritual kinda guy that so many people would be strongly moved to anger by reading MM's book(s). Strong work invokes strong passions and deeply hidden fears.

And so, having read this book many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, I'm buying another copy to share with my western-trained physician girlfriend who has no issue with looking within herself and to other cultures to find Truth.

The details of the vehicle for the message aren't so important as the message itself. Every being and book on the planet has faults and one can rip anything apart. Look within (yourself and This book) as a way of finding what it is we (americans) are so afraid of, and how simple and elegant Truth really is. The intense passions of the other reviewers should tell you how important it is to see for yourself NOT whether the details of this book are accurate, but what "Message" it is Marlo Morgan is trying (and Inspired) to convey. The message itself is Real, Accurate, and Appropriate.

Get over your fear
Summary: Excellent Book
Regardless of whether it's true or not, I found it to give good "life lessons" to anyone. It's about finding the real meaning of life, shedding material possesions and living life to the fullest. I don't know much about Aborigines but the lifestyle they live and their belief system struck a cord with me. I guess it's not for everybody but I found it fascinating. Read Message From Forever (same author) if you want another look.
Summary: Mutant Message
MUTANT MESSAGE DOWN UNDER

The familiar message is always worth repeating, that civilization's progress is harmful to the environment. However, the theme of the "noble savage" with mystical, super-natural powers and knowledge is so exaggerated it dashes any authenticity of the story. This sort of speculation is done frequently -- James Hilton, Carlos Castenada, etc -- and panders to attitudes of wishful thinking among readers.

Is it a good book? Yes, if you enjoyed reading it.

Is it true? Of course not.
