Summary: This really SHOULD have been in the box...
First things first: if you want to get any *real* work done in FP 2003, buy this book. Those of you who have work to do, feel free to ignore the rest of this review.

As someone who has worked for nearly twenty years in high tech (including five for Microsoft, so maybe I should say I worked in high tech for fifteen years and went to meetings and watched my back for another five), I decided recently to purchase FrontPage 2003 and was appalled to find a leaflet enclosed, rather than a manual. What the @!$%*#?!? Now I will be the first to admit that Microsoft has earned an honest reputation for obfuscation, overcomplication and completely redesigning products while ignoring the problems in the ones that have already shipped, but...not putting a manual in the box for this software is downright cruel. Most regular folks do not understand that Microsoft hides the coolest and most useful features from them because a) Great minds within the company assume the customer will hurt themselves when presented with an advanced feature, b) because these are the parts of the product most likely to generate calls to tech support in Bangalore and c) M$ products are actually created by tens of thousands of small, inefficient yet tireless rodents who enjoy nothing more than building a complex series of tunnels, so meaty functionality is almost always counter-intuitively hidden behind a maze of dialogs.

And a special love letter to Bill and/or Ballmer, if you're reading this, wake up and smell the espresso...ordinary people can and DO read manuals, as do world-weary geeks. Front Page is actually, against incredible odds, a good product.

The decision not to include a manual was apparently somebody's 'great idea' of cost-cutting. Bad, bad decision. Shame on you, big billion-dollar company, for shafting the customer once again. This is a move in the wrong direction. Next time you reorg the company, aim for hiring some real talent (rather than cookie-cutter drones), putting the customer first (instead of lip service) and cutting some of the layers of overpaid management fat rather than short-changing the people who paid earnest money for, and are struggling to work with, your software. You're looking more like Enron every day.
Summary: Shoud have been in the box.
THE MISSING MANUAL IS REALLY "THE BOOK THAT SHOUD HAVE BEEN IN THE FP BOX." CONGRATULATION TO JESSICA MANTARO. AN EXCELENT MANUAL. I RECOMMEND, GO AHEAD.
MARCELO, FROM: CURITIBA - BRAZIL.
Summary: Missing Manual, is right!
This is the second manual I have purchased for FrontPage 2003. This book is clear, concise, and easy to follow. I appreciate the clarity for an amateur like me.

Summary: Microsoft is great with software but not with documentation
I ordered this book as well as Special Addition Using Ms FP 2003 The only FP2003 book you'll ever need. This is the book to get!! The microsoft book does not really do a good job of fully explaining the topic. To me it was very confusing. The other book I just mentioned is 3 times as thick and goes from very basic to very advanced. So as you grow the book will be there for all the information. I will be returning this book and keeping the Special Addition.
Summary: 3 books on learning FrontPage 2003
I actually bought 3 books: Microsoft FrontPage 2003 Step-by-Step, Microsoft FrontPage 2003 Inside-Out, and Que Special Edition Using FrontPage 2003.

Step-by-step is a very useful starting point, but you'll soon run out of this book. By far, the best of the 3 is Que's Using FrontPage 2003 - it is excellent! FrontPage 2003 Inside-Out is good IF you're interested in Active Server Pages.

But all in all - if you want to buy just one I recommend Que Special Edition Using FrontPage 2003. The format lets you learn by solving problems that you run into. For example, you want find out about Banners, the book not only answers your questions but gives you the background and advise on using the feature. And the author is very candid about suggesting when to use and NOT use a particular feature. The authors obviously have used the product for real-world web sites and really wanted to share their experiences and knowledge.
Summary: Provides Only a Spefic Example Included on The CD
Does not provide directions for "Step-by-Step" creation of your own original web site. It continously refers to the example on the included CD so you recreate that website.

Poorly written and confusing. Do not waste your money if you are trying to build a custom website.

A lot of text that's spread out and difficult to follow. Would have been nice to see more examples. eg, constructing drop down menus section provides a lot of text but few examples to carry you through to actually creating drop down menus. More how to and less theory would be helpful.

Summary: Very Good Resource - Fills in the Details That Other Books Don't Offer
I learned FrontPage 2003 using 'How to Do Everything with Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003', which is a very good book to start with, but as I developed some skills, I started asking myself questions about how I might go a little further or why some things were the way they were with the program. I found 'Inside Out' gave me a lot of answers to big and little questions that I never saw explained in any other published text (I have five FrontPage 2003 books). Each chapter stands alone, so that you don't have to build up your knowledge to understand any particular chapter by having only read from the beginning. I am using the book right now and improving my website every day. A very good resource. Much better than the FrontPage 2003 Bible, which I checked out from the library. If you are familiar with FrontPage 2003 and want to make FrontPage 2003 your best friend, this is the book to do it! ;-)

Summary: Returned it
I know my way around front page. I bought this book so that I could learn more. I found that it offered me nothing but hundreds of pages of text that really did nothing for someone like me who wanted to create a visully stimulating website.

I guess if you wanted to run a database or just wanted to use a template included in FP than the book would suffice. Anyone looking for ideas for creativity should look else where.

I sent it back to Amazon the next day. I am still looking for a book that gives me what I am looking for.
Summary: Great addition, but not for beginners.
This is a great book if you know the basics of Frontpage 2003. This is not a beginners book, but an intermediate. Has alot of ways you can improve your site. I am always referring to it.
Summary: The Book is OK, jumps around too much
This book seemed to read more like a very nice help file, then a "using" book. I read the book chapter by chapter, what I wanted to do was just build a website. I got to the section "Enhancing your site with Frames", but the author recommended not to use frames, then gave three other alternatives each with See page x. What I am doing it jumping all over the book to figure out what the recommended way to lay out my page in Front Page 2003 (I still don't know). It is not very clear to me, because when I went to the alternative pages suggested for frames, it said use shadow boxes, with another disclaimer about shadow boxes were going to be done away with. Another suggestion was to use "link bars" which makes no sense at all. The book is filled with many "Hey, I didn't know that" stuff. I am a busy advanced user, and I can't imagine what a novice user must feel like reading this book. It is a good reference for FP 2003 if you know exactly what you are looking for. By reading this book, I am just not sure what the recommendations are for building a website, I found out what not to use. I does expand on several topics, but after reading the chapters, it is a bit shallow and seems to reference some of the same things. The book does not seem to just flow, or continue with the fact the user is trying to build a website. Instead, it gets off track, and covers too many subjects. I gave it 4 stars because there are a few features I can use the author wrote about in detail.

Summary: Buy it. You won't regret it.
If you're brand new to web page authoring like myself, the "Bible" is an excellent guide. I bought it on the strength of a review here at Amazon.... Everything "ep" wrote on that review is true. The Quick Start Book is exactly what it is - a quick start, and it's good. It helped me quickly understand the basics of FrontPage 2000.

Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Bible by Edelbrock and Karlin is an excellent supplement to an excellent software. It's not perfect, like "ep" pointed out, but I'm building a departmental intranet using only this book and the program's user help index.

Summary: Don't ever touch the software
This book is good, but the problem lies in the application software itself. Frontpage is the worst ever happens to me. If I'd known Dreamweaver, I'd never had spent 2 weeks learning the Frontpage. You'd love the bible series if you're a beginner, but if you want something more advanced, then look else where.
Summary: good deal
This book, as all of Karlins books, is an excellent guide to FrontPage 2000. More than a quick reference, this bible will explain everything you need to know about using FrontPage 2000.

Summary: A surprisingly weak book
I have read many ...for Dummies books and bought the All in One for Excel, Access and FP2003 together. The FP2003 stood out as by far the weakest of the three.

It gives short thrift to the mechanics of using the software and quickly drifts into programming techniques to avoid explaining how the software works. I bought the book to understand and use the many features of FP2003. I was disappointed.

A waste of my money, and no doubt, a waste of yours.
Summary: Complete Coverage of the Latest FrontPage
FrontPage was designed for Dummies. (Well, let's be more polite and say not dumb people, but people unfamiliar with this product.) And Microsoft has continued this tradition. FrontPage 2003 is much more closely integrated into the Microsoft Office environment that it was a few versions ago. There is now support for cascading style sheets, database connectivity (ASP and PHP), XML, and VBA programming.

I kind of wonder though at the thought of a software package that needs a 792 page book to describe it as being for dummies. There's gotten to be an awful lot in FrontPage.

This book is divided into nine books. These are organized in such a way that you don't need to read all of them to start using FrontPage in a productive way. For instance if you are doing static (not database) related pages, there are several book that you don't need to read, you can save them until you need that material.

If you've made the decision to use FrontPage, here is the most complete reference book available.

Summary: filled a gap
I found "Quicksteps" filled a gap left between the Dummies and online help. The Dummies book just showed "How To" do items the author liked.
Summary: When You're Beginning
I purchased the book to learn a little about FrontPage 2003. I wanted to publish a personal web site. This book is absolutely fantastic for what I wanted. No, it's not for the guru's, but if you want a book to step you through the basics and be useful as a reference, this is it. The pictures are well laid out and well marked. The sidebars are full of useful information.
