Summary: Loaded with great information
While less than 250 pages this book if chalk full of useful information. It provides lots of detail specifically around new capabilities, which is good for anyone experienced with IIS. I found it easy to read and got me up to speed fast. It also has an introductory chapter for fist time IIS users, which seasoned techies can skip.
This book as an easy to read alternative to the Microsoft technical reference on IIS 6.

Summary: Stanek bats a thousand again!
This book is really worth every penny it costs. It is packed with useful information, well written, intelligent, and enjoyable to read. Just the chapters on IIS applications, side by side .NET configurations, and pooling are worth the whole book: it goes through every detail.

The in-depth coverage of every other subject is as accurate as it gets. I particularly appreciated the chapter about customization. But the book goes as far as covering in perfectly understandable terms the metabase, and more. Not to mention the incredibly accurate chapter about optimization.
Summary: A Good One

One of the good books in the market about IIS 6.0.

People who are interested MUST have a look at

MCPMAG(Redmondmag) IIS 6.0: Step-By-Step Mega-Guide, Part I & II as a quick reference.

Summary: Very good manual
This book is indeed a pocket consultant. With its easy to read writing style, you can read it from start to finish or just skim each chapter for important topics. Either way, it will serve as an indespensible bookshelf companion and guide to discover many secrets and tips of IIS.

Summary: Excellent ASP reference book
This is an excellent companion book to 'Professional Active Server Pages'. Like most O'Reilly Nutshell texts, this book is designed more as a reference aid, rather than a learning text. If you buy both the Professional ASP tome, and this reference guide, you've bought everything you need for ASP.
Summary: Excellent book!
As a student in college, I want to learn some advanced web programming language. I found this book is very helpful for beginner. I also get a discount from couponsky.com when buying this book. This book is not only useful for beginner's studying, you also can take it as reference after you finish the studying. I recommend this book to the beginners in ASP.
Summary: Good reference and code samples, but...
Somewhat in a rush and while trying to learn ASP I purchased this book. I thought it was aweful and it collected dust for nearly 6 months while I searched elsehwere to boot myself up on ASP. However, now that I'm fairly proficient at ASP, this book has been helpful as a reference. No so much for the actual reference value but becasue the sample code helps put things in perspective.

Summary: Good tutorials and content, but it's all in VB.Net only
I was excited to get my hands on this book and check out the tutorials until I realized that they are all in VB.Net. No C# examples are to be found anywhere in the book. Although C# developers can typically translate code from VB into C#, it's easier and less time consuming to see the code in C# from the outset of the project. I'm really surprised that this author would aim this title at VB developers given that so much of professional development is done in C#.

Lee does, however, offer some quite useful sample projects in this book. I like how she emphasizes what's new in 2.0 instead of rehashing what .Net 1.1 developers will already know from their work. Most of the examples are short and contain just enough code to get the key concepts across to the reader. In some chapters I felt that more explanatory text would have been helpful, but with all the help documentation for .Net I was able to fill in any knowledge gaps.
Summary: Shotgun writing style didn't work for me
If I had to sum this book up in one word, it would be 'scatterbrained' ...

I have referenced it a few times; most of those times I have found the topic I was looking for but the examples/steps presented in the book didn't actually work or at least didn't work the way I needed them to.

I couldn't really find any logical flow to the book, either. It jumps from one topic to the next (maybe that is what they were striving for with the 'notebook' approach). To me, it made it difficult to use/follow. The index isn't bad, and since that was where I always went first I guess it doesn't matter too much that I was bouncing all over from chapter to chapter.

I'd say this book was of below-average usefulness. Course, there are not a lot of 'beta' books out there, so you have limited choices prior to launch.

Summary: just what the doctor ordered
just bought this book today and motoring thru it.
It is so orentated to a developer, I have been using VB since version3 and have bitten the bullet so I can do more, faster and better with net2.0
Things I liked about the book is that it is thin and its core stuff to 'just make it work'.
I can quickly be productive, build on my confidence and know where to learn more 'as and when I need it' and not get saturated with needless feature details. The book does seem to be all lab and is very suitable for those practical/kinesethic types that learn by getting their hands dirty and playing with something - it might not suit people who need to know everything before they start. Also the print style is very easy on the eyes, looks like someone has made margine notes in it and ample space for your own notes to. Wish this was the first book on ASP.NET2 I had bought.

Summary: If you are technical/webmaster, this book is not for you.
This book is great for those who are managers and won't ever actually do any real programming/web mastering or do anything but just want to know how IIS operates, or just want to claim you read a book on IIS. If you are a webmaster or want to learn about IIS specifics, you've come to the wrong place, this book is not for you.

If you are looking for a how to guide, this book is painfully underdeveloped. The authors are great for saying, if you want more information, use the IIS help and not discuss anything in great details. Most of the book mentions different aspects of the IIS without really delving into the details of the options. Parts on setting up mutliple websites is limited to 2 pages without telling you how to specifically do it. Instead they mention the various options and pros and cons for the different options. Beyond this, they say absolutely nothing. This is a fantastic no help book and is one of the worst books written from Microsoft press. Very disappointing.
Summary: IIS 6.0 Resource Kit for Dummies?
My biggest objection to this book is the tone used by the authors in talking to the reader. Presumably this is a book that will be bought and used by professional persons with an above-average intelligence, but the feeling I get when reading many passages in this book is that the authors are talking down to someone who they don't expect to be very bright.

There is a lot of repetition and a lot of trying to describe something that is intrinsically complicated in a way to try to make it sound simpler than it is. This is presumably done because the authors are afraid that the reader will otherwise not be able to follow the descriptions at all.

Another thing that I don't like about this book is that references from one place in the book to another place do not use page numbers. Here's a typical example:

'For more information about how to back up the Web server, see "Back Up and Restore the Web Server to a File or Tape" in "IIS Deployment Procedures" in this book.'

Because there isn't any page number reference you have to go to the table of contents and find "IIS Deployment Procedures" (which is an appendix) and then scan the contents of that appendix for "Back Up and Restore the Web Server to a File or Tape", and then you find the page number.

Another problem is that you can't be 100% sure that what it says in this book is correct. I haven't found all that many errors, but I have found a few.

For example, on page 10 it says, "When IIS is installed, it is locked down by default so that it can only server static content." This is not true, at least not for Windows Server 2003, Web Edition, which has ASP support enabled by default.

Another example: On page 22 it says, "When you complete installation of Windows Server 2003, Manage Your Server automatically starts." This is not true, at least not for Windows Server 2003, Web Edition.

Two CD-ROM's are included with the book. One CD contains an evaluation version of Windows Server 2003. The other CD contains several searchable online versions of IIS documents and Help files, and 14 IIS tools. Incidentally, you don't need to buy this book to obtain the tools, as they are also available for download on Microsoft's web site.

This book contains a huge amount of very detailed information about IIS 6, and if you really need this information then this book is "the only show in town". My advice though, is to consider carefully if you really need all this advanced information, or whether you can perhaps get along with one or two of the less comprehensive books about IIS 6.

Rennie Petersen

Summary: Must have book for IIS experts
Covers all topics required for successfully planning, designing, deploying, troubleshooting and tuning IIS. You can't claim to be an IIS expert without this book!

Summary: Ideal for the Windows Administrator
This squat 350 page book is filled with practical advice for anyone tasked with the administration of one or more Windows servers. It covers simple remote machine management, Active Directory, IIS, and the truly annoying Windows DNS issues. Screen shots are kept to a minimum and graphics are used effectively. Concepts are explained but not rat-holed and the topics covered are practical. The only thing keeping me from giving this a perfect ranking are the often longish code samples that are not annotated and could be referenced on the site as opposed to included in the text.

A must have for starting Windows administrators, definitely worth the look for experienced ones, particularly because of the condensed practical nature of the text with Microsoft Press books so often lack.
Summary: A seminal and invaluable reference shelf addition
Managing a Windows based system is almost always problematic for even the most experienced manager team. Enter Mitch Tulloch's Windows Server Hacks: 100 Industrial-Strength Tips & Tools which specifically focuses upon scripts and other tools that will make any and all Windows server maximize its utility while minimizing managerial resources to keep it operational and on-line. This 357-page compendium of tips, tricks and techniques is wonderfully well organized so as to have solutions and explanations at the beck and call of even the most novice Windows system user. Confidently recommended, Windows Server Hacks is a seminal and invaluable reference shelf addition.
Summary: Fantastic
A fantastic book with many script hacks that most admins don't know about. I have used a number of the hacks in house.

Summary: Not completely complete, but pretty good
I haven't read all of this book yet, and I probably never will, considering that some of the chapters are irrelevant once you've decided on which programming platform you are going to use. But what I've read so far I like.

This book is somewhat unusual in that it discusses two normally separate topics: setting up and administering IIS 6.0, and basic server-side programming techniques.

Concerning the part about setting up IIS, I was pleased to discover that the book also includes some very useful information about how Windows Server 2003 should be installed and set up to ensure good basic security. I've read two other books about IIS 6.0 and neither of them had this kind of material.

My one quibble is the lack of information about how to set up an FTP server for use in uploading and maintaining the content of a web site. OK, I know that FTP is an obsolete technology for doing this, but still, it is the traditional method, so a simple example showing the best way of doing this would have been nice. (On the other hand, the two other books I've read about IIS 6.0 didn't cover this either, although one of them included enough information to allow the proper technique to be figured out.)

Turning to the server-side programming part, there are examples of simple applications using the following technologies: ASP, COM, ASP.NET, ATL and ISAPI. The book does not include a CD-ROM but one of the authors has a web site from which you can download all of the sample files, 19 MB in all.

Two final criticisms: There is no mention of possible alternative programming platforms such as Perl, PHP, MySQL, etc., and where to find them. And some of the screen shots have a resolution that makes the text almost impossible to read.

In conclusion, if you're involved in both setting up an IIS 6.0 web server and in creating a web site to run on it then you'll find this book very useful.

Summary: Superficial
I have to agree with the comments concerning the superficiality of this book. If you understand what the author is discussing then you don't need this book except perhaps as a reference. If you don't understand the topic there is very little explanation that will help you. Please be aware that the author is extremely MS biased and works entirely in Front Page and VBscript. Statements like "...there are a plethora of hackers who are continuously trying to discredit Microsoft and its products..." (p148) are deplorable.
Summary: There should be jail time for these kind of writers
Yeah, great book IF you already know all this stuff. As a technical writer by profession I would use this book as a first draft to begin to create an understandible presentation of IIS. This is filled with ambiguity unless you know IT administration from way back...For example, the author romps through setting up a website using a wizard. Fine. But "hello!" am I supposed to know what the permissions are that I am setting up? For whom? For the website visitor or the FrontPage author, or what??? As it turned out I was locking the pages from editing by any FrontPage users. Great.

Yeah, a fine book for the inner cult. But no concept that someone might be setting up a dedicated server as a "mom and pop" ISP. I finally punted and called Microsoft... We finally figured out the problems and I can guarantee you it was nothing that this book could have helped with... The only thing worse than confusing software is ambiguous technical writing about it!

Summary: Very disapponited
I bought the book because of the 4.5+ rating on Amazon. But this book is a complete waste of money, it lacks any in-depth stuff needed by a professional, the author does not seem to have the calibre to write something which is really beyond the obvious, all he seems to know is some VB stuff.
