Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Good Head Start These Step by Step books are used at most community colleges to teach students how to use various MS applications. If you are self-directed, it can save you the class cost. It is also a great way to teach yourself an application. The books provide a wealth of information that can be used immediately. The key is to apply the application to your work ASAP. MS Project is definitely one of those tools that requires use or you will loose the non-basic concepts. Version 2003 is a step above MS version 2002 because it provides powerful wizards to assist you with the cost and scheduling planning process. MS Project is a standard project planning tool that is integrated with most Enterprise Level applications or it can be used as a standalone tool. So far, the learning is going well. Summary: A Must Have Reference if you Deal with Project Management at any Level using MS Project The best reference out there to learn everything you can do with MS Project 2003. This book is packet with useful information, laid out in a clear and readable language, with many illustrations and examples, and a CD-ROM loaded with practice Project files. The 23 chapters in the book deal with everything related with project management: From creating a task list, setting up resources, and assigning resources to tasks,... to measuring performance, tracking progress, and managing risks. No matter at what level of project management you are dealing with in your work, if you are using MS Project 2003 to do it you will find the information you need in this book. I am an Industrial Practitioner who uses MS Project at work, and I haven't found a better reference for Project 2003 on the shelves yet. Summary: Very thorough introduction to Project Among what real managers are likely to face, there cannot be many harder projects to plan and track than the shooting of a film. It's a really good idea that this book uses a short movie's shooting schedule as the model project for all its exercises and illustrations. The text is very repetitive, which is I suppose good because you can jump in at the chapter you need without having to dig back through the early chapters to find all the intermediate steps that get you to what you want to do. The text is very clear, and every example on the CD works as described in the text. Helps me not worry about working in Project. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: NO DISK FOR CLASS THIS TEXT BOOK DOES NOT COME WITH THE REQUIRED DISK FOR COMPLETING PROJECTS REQUIRED FOR THE COLLEGE CLASSROOM. Summary: Confusing, and at times inaccurate I used this book for an online class, books and test are bundled together and each time I took the test I had to challenge at lest one question, because it was simply wrong or inaccurate. Test quiz/test questions are non constructive for the most part. Many examples use non-standard fonts that hard to find, making assignments unnecessarily difficult to complete, in some excercises after following all instuctions the correct result would not match the examples given again creating diffulty not needed. This books suited for online classes because it often gives instructions which are completely irrelevant in such environment. The books gives a good amount of tips and tricks about MS Office, books needs revising and grouping of lessons. Summary: Excellent Reference This reference book is a must have for anyone learning or needing the support for Windows 2003. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Reveals Many MSP Issues-but Not for Beginners This book will not teach you how to perform 'work planning' (or scheduling) and it will not teach you the basics of how to use MS Project. I have at least 5 thick books that do that, and I consider most of them useless. I have been managing IT projects since the 1980s, and have used MS Project (MSP) since the early 1990s. I have spent many late hours struggling with its confusing and misleading and Poorly documented) functions that do not always do what you expect (or the help/manual says)it will do. I particulary dislike it's seemingly random choice to recalc a critical path, and changes dates and durations based only on resources. In June, my team (an experienced set of IT project managers)took advanced MS Project training from the "International Institute for Learning". All 15 people who attended the training said it was the best MS project training they had ever had! Part of the success of the course was that the instructor was an experienced software project manager who had extensive experience with MS Project and other scheduling tools. She knew MSP's eccentricities and annoyances and was very clear in guiding us what to do - or Not to do. The class materials were also excellent and were clear on the various issues that MSP has, and the unplanned effects they can have on a project work plan. This included the "Dynamic Scheduling.." book. This book includes warnings and workarounds for many of MSP's 'warts'. These are the quirks that project managers complain about at PMI meetings, but can never seem to find *any* documentation from Microsoft (who acts like the problems do not exist), or the 3rd party book vendors who usually regurgitate the misleading - and vague - online help text. One of the reasons this book does not cover managing Multiple projects with MSP, is that *you do not want to try and do it*. From personal experience, MSP is NOT an industrial strength project management tool, and it has a primative database that has not changed much in 15 years. Technically, it can have sub-projects, but it usually Chokes on anything that a typical large project has (2,000 or more tasks). The main reason IT projects use MSP is because it is relatively *cheap* since it is bundled into the MS Office enterprise license. It is a dog... but most shops cannot, or will not replace it. SO - get this book to help you survive and Stop making the all too common mistakes that people do in MSP. Summary: Solid book I bought this book off to help me with scheduling. I found it to be both comprehensive and fun; Using examples at the end of each chapter to reinforce the learning. I tend to refer back to it whenever I'm planning a new project. This book was well worth my time and energy. Summary: Straight and clear This book is very well written. The author has found a effective way to align the project management concepts to the MS Project 2003 functionalities by simulating real life situations. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Basic but good! I got this book because I was taking an introductory computer class for GE credit (hooray for easy classes!). Being an advanced computer user, at first I was dubious how much I would actually learn from the class. This book pleasantly surprised me. It goes through the basics of Windows XP Pro, MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint 2003. The book itself is well laid out, with plenty of screenshots to supplement text instructions. It also gives plenty of projects at the end of each chapter to test out your new skills. The introduction to Windows is designed for someone who has never touched a computer before, but the sections on MS Office have proven useful. I just finished the section on Word, and a lot of the stuff in there I knew already, but there were some features and shortcuts that I had not previously known about. The layout of each chapter makes it easy to scan what each section covers, so skipping content that you already know is effortless. My only complaint is that the book is very Microsoft-centric. When talking about web browsers it does not mention Firefox or any alternative browsers, and when talking about media players it only focuses on Windows Media Player. I suppose that's good for the novice computer user, as having too many choices of software can be confusing when one doesn't even know how to use a computer. However, once a user becomes comfortable with a certain piece of software, s/he is unlikely to switch to a different one. In future editions I would at least like to see an appendix included that explains popular alternatives to software such as Internet Explorer (Mozilla Firefox, Opera, etc.) and Windows Media Player (Winamp, JetAudio, etc.). To sum up: great book, easy to read, contains lots of useful information. However, it is too MS-centric. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: Not for Beginners! Many errors. The book is definitely not for teaching beginners, it is to prepare for the MOS cetification. However, almost every exercise has some sort of mistakes, either instructional, numeric, or formula type mistakes so that the exercises CANNOT be assigned as home work, but have to be done with the students in class and the "BUGS" worked out before they can do them on their own. It is a real shame to release a study book without proof reading it first and correcting the mistakes. An individual who knows Excel can get some good information from the book, but a student will be very confused if not very frustrated using it. Even as an instructor I get frustrated over the numerous errors. This book should be handed out for free with an additional offer of $20 to correct the mistakes. I'm sorry to have paid money for such a poorly proof read study instrument. I have one suggestion: I'll correct the errors if the author/publisher pays me for doing the work. Anita Summary: Microsoft Office Excel 2003 Step by Step This is the book you need to ;earn Excel. Included is a CD and the reading is very easy and understandable. Summary: Run away from this book. The first two chapters in this book are just a straightforward explanation of the Excel worksheet. The third chapter is where you are supposed to begin learning how to use Excel. The very first section in the chapter -- creating formulas to calculate values -- starts with an example that is wrong! You cannot perform the calculation given by the author by following his instructions. Instead, you receive an error message. This particular calculation is an absolutely basic one for using Excel. A visit to Microsoft's website does not provide you with a correction for that or anything else. Any reputable publisher -- O'Reilly for instance -- always has a link where you can find errors corrected. I stopped using the book at this point and purchased Excel 2003 Personal Trainer. I have not found an error in that book and I have completed four of the chapters. It appears Microsoft Excel 2003 Step by Step is in the best tradition of Microsoft products. Their operating system gives us viruses, infections, spyware, trojans, and adware. (This is why Microsoft's new operating system is called VISTA.) This book gives us the printed version of these problems -- poorly written text. Summary: |
