Summary: Powerpoint Presentations that POP
If you do any kind of powerpoint presentations, this book is a must read. It provides insight into why you don't want to have your audience reading while you are presenting. It also provides you options and resources to make your presentations better, more informative and credible.
Summary: A Friendly Tutorial on a Better Way
The heart of connections is story telling, and Atkinson's book gives step-by-step instructions on applying this approach to effective PowerPoint presentations, including web-based templates to smooth the way. My only complaint that this Microsoft-published work gives almost no references to the number of free resources also available elsewhere on the web to assist the potential presenter with visuals and tools to make the job easier.

As a professional trainer, I will be using Atkinson's book as a guide to a new course I am writing.
Summary: An outsider's view
When it comes to Cliff Atkinson's Beyond Bullet Points, I am a bit of an outsider. I don't read many computer books and, while I have worked with PowerPoint, my presentations are very simple. Since I admittedly use my share of bullet points in these presentations, I thought learning about an alternative approach would be useful. And while there are definite benefits to reading this book, it may not be perfect for everyone.

Many people use bullet points in their PowerPoint presentations; this can be a great way to organize thoughts, but Atkinson has a difference approach. Essentially, the Beyond Bullet Points method treats presentations as stories told in three "acts." Act One develops the story, Act Two develops the action and Act Three frames the resolution. Each act is broken down into scenes which provide the details. The first portion of the book explains how to work with each act; the second portion deals with the evolution from initial outline to final presentation.

This book assumes a certain amount of PowerPoint knowledge; if you want to learn about the application, this is not the place to start (on the other hand, you don't need to be a PowerPoint expert). One of the nicest things about Atkinson's approach is the way he allows presentations to be pared down to fit the time frame required: his method is designed best with a 45 minute presentation, but it can be easily compressed to a 15 minute or even 5 minute presentation. Another nice thing is that he has a website that readers can access that provides some helpful materials such as template documents.

On the other hand, Atkinson treats the issue of bullet points/no bullet points as something of a black-and-white issue. He doesn't really acknowledge that there may be a middle ground where bullet points should be used in certain situations, perhaps even in conjunction with his approach. I think it's more appropriate to view the Beyond Bullet Points as an alternative approach to PowerPoint presentations, not the ONLY approach.

Atkinson's writing style is straightforward, and like many computer books, a little dry. But as stated earlier, I am reading this book with something of an outsider's view. This is a good book, but Atkinson's inability to look beyond his own approach keeps it from being a five-star work. Nonetheless, if you do a lot of PowerPoint presentations, there is enough useful material in here to merit a read.

Summary: Disappointing
This book was a disappointment. I had expected a reference of the caliber of David Pogue's Mac OS X Tiger manual. Among problem areas: a hard-to-navigate and incomplete index, fuzzy photo insets, and incorrect cross-references. The manual has the feel of something put together in a hurry without proper proof-reading, and borrowing heavily from canned sources. I learned some things but had to work harder to glean the information than I should have. I would not recommend this manual, unless it's the only game in town. I don't think it is.
Summary: Beware the mistakes
I am a big fan of the Missing Manual series. Previous books have given me lots of insights into my installed software and have made my computing time much more efficient. I therefore approached this book with much enthusiasm. Office is such a gargantuan program, with tons of bells and whistles, that Microsoft itself estimates that most users take advantage of less than a third of its capabilities.

However, the book is a major disappointment, because of its many mistakes and poor organization. Most of the mistakes are ones you can work around--for example, on page 8 the topics covered by appendixes A and B are reversed--but the sheer number of such mistakes makes reading the book a major distraction. Every few pages I find myself going to the Missing Manuals web site to report yet more errata, such as incomplete or wrong instructions, figures that do not agree with the text or figure captions, incomprehensible writing, seeming confusion between the Mac and PC versions of the program, etc. And I agree wholeheartedly with a previous reviewer who complained about the inadequate index.

It looks as though O'Reilly Publishers did not do an adequate proofing of the book, but instead rushed it out as soon as possible. That is too bad, because I will now be much more hesitant to purchase another Missing Manuals title.
Summary: Good book crippled by inadequate index
I was impressed by the other 'Missing Manual' book which I have read, their guide to OSX, and had high hopes for this one. The book itself is quite decent, though not as well written as the OSX guide. However, it is crippled by a totally inadequate index. First, the way in which the index is organized makes little sense -- some Word topics are listed alphabetically on their own, while others are grouped together as sub-entries under 'Word', forcing you to look in several different places. Far worse, the index is simply incomplete, making it difficult if not impossible to look up the answers to specific questions.

For instance, let's say you want to look up how to use all those little triangle widget things on the ruler. There's just one entry for 'ruler' as a sub entry under 'Word' (and none as a stand-alone entry): page 22. Page 22 contains just two lines about the ruler, with the injunction to "See page 116 for details on how to use and change these settings". As it happens, there's nothing at all on page 116 about the ruler, and the reference should probably be to page 130, which contains a discussion of margins. But typos aside, the main issue is, why isn't the page which contains the actual information about how to use the various features of the ruler listed in the index under 'ruler'? This is typical of the grossly incomplete indexing which makes this book nearly useless as a problem-solving guide. The index is simply too short, with only a total of about three pages devoted to all of the Word entries.

The Pogue Press/O'Reilly people should really create a proper index (how difficult can this be to do on a book which was doubtless created in electronic form by people who are presumably intimately familiar with the use of Word 2004) and post it on their website. That would at least make it possible to use the book as a reference source.

Note: the above comments are based on the third of the book devoted to Word. I assume that the same problems exist in the other sections, but I bought the book primarily to use with Word and haven't worked in detail with those other sections.

Summary: This should have been the manual
This is certainly as dry as a computer manual, so Microsoft could have included this as at least a PDF with PowerPoint. So did not do that and now they want you to buy this separately. That itself is reason to not buy this book and look at other alternatives.

My favorite others are:

How To Do Everything with PowerPoint 2003
Cutting Edge PowerPoint for Dummies
PowerPoint 2003 Visual Quickstart Guide
Summary: Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 Step by Step
Very easy to follow and teach from. It's also very easy for those that I'm training to follow from as well.

Very well written.
Summary: Office PP 2003
This Powerpoint book was very well written. The information was precise and easy to follow. I recommend it to anyone planning to get Microsoft certification.

Summary: Not What I Expected
I bought this book based on the feedback on this page. And although I would not call the book unusable, it has a lot of scope for improvement. The book layout is terrible and there is almost zero cross refrencing in the book itself. Imagine the author does not ask the reader to look in another part of the book for more information. So my verdict is that although the book has good content, it's laid out in a haphazard way.
Summary: Great beginner's book
I love this book. The reason I gave this book 4 stars is because it hopelessly fails trying to get into PowerPoint programming territory. The author should have stayed away from this area and concentrated more on beginner issues. After all, this certainly is a beginner's book. In fact, it's as good as the missing PowerPoint manual. If you want to go beyond the manual, check out the well explained Cutting Edge PowerPoint by Geetesh Bajaj. It makes a great complement to this book. And if you want to do more programming, check out Powerful PowerPoint for Educators by David Marcovitz. And for troubleshooting PowerPoint, look at Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances by Echo Swinford.
Summary: Helpful step by step
I like this book because I found out how to use all the features of the software and it covered many of the topics that were important to me including the fine points of graphic design and tips for delivering the presentation in front of an audience.

Summary: Advanced only in title
First of all, the comparison to Tufte's book, or a recommendation as a complement in another review for this book is a joke. To those who don't know what I am saying, Tufte tells everyone to stop using PowerPoint altogether, and this book would probably give him a headache.
Summary: this should be basic presentation techniques
The title is really misleading. This book teaches all beginning powerpoint techniques. I browsed through the book. None of these techniques are advanced. How to rotate a text box. How to fill it with color. Who calls these advanced techniques. Not me.

If you are lookong for a beginners book for powerpoint, you can give this one a try. For advanced book look for alternative.
Summary: Great next step after the basics
I found this book to be just what I needed to go to the next level. Not only does it go into detail about features of the program, including ones I never knew existed, but it also gave me a lot of ideas for creating effects. For example, using custom animation on a stack of objects to make them appear and disappear in various combinations, and tying in music to individual objects as well as overall soundtracks from CDs.

I liked how it took things that I have used a lot before, like text boxes, and then ran through everything there was to know about them, every little-known option and piece of it. Yeah it does have entire chapters on things that someone might consider a basic feature, but it covers those features in an exhaustive way, way beyond what any other book talks about for them, including links to Web sites with add-ins and articles to go beyond.

This book will definitely have a place on my bookshelf for a long time to come. Any time there's something I want to do out of the ordinary with PowerPoint that I'm not sure about, here's where I'll go.

Summary: You might not be dumb as you think.
For some of the material, I thought the book was o.k., but for others, it seemed a bit overly simplistic and difficult to find solutions for more complicated tasks. Does not include tips on Publisher, which was disappointing.

Summary: Microsoft Office @2000 -ShellyCashman Series Book
The book itself is very good. I would recommend it to those who are just starting to learn and for those who need to brush up on their skills or use as a desk reference. I did not like the "ring -binder" form as it seems flimsy and already was looking used when I got it due to shipping. I would suggest the other form for future reference.
Summary: Great Book just skip the first chapters about computers!!!
The book is great but it is written for people who never had experience with computers. So I would advise anyone to skip those intial chapters. I highly recommend getting the spiral bound edition because the book is about the size of a major city's Yellow Pages and it is easier to handle.

The screen-by-screen instruction is terrific but of course, I ignore directions such as (open window, hit save, etc..). The lessons at the end of each project allow you to perform the lessons that you just learned. I would advise that you download the lessons on your computer instead of to a disk like the book recommends. Since I was just laid off, the book is great for brushing up on programs that you don't really use on a daily basis. I am planning to get the advanced versions of the book very soon.
Summary: Microsoft Office 2000
This book is quite useful especially for those who is self-directed. You will find it informative and put you at ease. You can follow step-by-step instructions and learn a lot from this book.
