Summary: Great book to prep for exam and use after
I went through the Microsoft class 2272 and read this book before taking the XP exam . The book does a great job covering topics which are not adequately discussed in the class (RIS, RIPrep, Sysprep, Overview of Active Directory and server side issues which MUST be considered when troubleshooting XP issues among others). I passed with a nice margin and the book continues to be a great reference tool. The CD included with the book is great as well, it contained two additional MS Press books (Ency. of Networking, and Ency. of Security, plus a Measure Up test). The Measure Up test is worth the price alone since it presents questions in a format which is VERY close to the actual MS test. Some typos throughout but overall very good.

Summary: Passed exam first time with 905, using this book.....
This book was my primary reference to pass this exam.

I have used XP Pro since 2002 and am fairly familiar with it. I picked up this book based on a number of reviews I read here. I agree with one reviewer who mentioned IIS was barely mentioned, he is correct on that score. WebDAV was never mentioned either.

The MeasureUP test prep software was pretty good. I found a good percentage of the questions from the software on the exam.

Summary: Its not a teaching book.
The book for the most part is having a discussion with you about Windows XP. Offering comments or critiques. It is not a book that I would recommend for learning via book. A Few areas actually go into depth. I see it as a PowerPoint presentation discussion about basics XP and should have been sold as. It lacked detail in networking and wireless needed for many user/owner issues.

Summary: Windows XP For Dummies, 2nd Edition
As stated and well known to most, the "...For Dummies" series of books is aimed at beginners. That doesn't take away from the valuable information that is included in their send up of Windows XP and believe or not I still refer to it for it's other stated purpose - "a reference for the rest of us."
Because of the nature and audience level of expertise, IT STILL IS a fantastic basic reference and I have used it to find broader subjects and to narrow my search in both my higher level references on XP - "Windows XP: The Missing Manual" and "Windows XP Inside Out Second Deluxe Edition". Using a computer and a new operating system is like riding a bike. The Dummies series are the ones to get when you still need training wheels on flat ground. It makes the basis of knowledge found in more advanced references (ones that are well written, anyway as the two I've mentioned)easier to understand and become proficient and confidentwith the subject matter at higher levels.
I think the book is worth the cost when you're first starting out.

Summary: WOW Great deal and Super Helpful I just took this certification and found out that some of test questions were the same as the back of this book. If you go through the test bank in the back of the book and go through the lessons your sure to pass. The book also comes with 180 day trials of xp pro sp2 and office 2003 professional. Not to meantion you get a voucher for 15% off the exam. I will warn you that some of the exam questions are very easy and others are super tricky. Summary: Act Quickly This book came with a free trial of Office 2003. (The book for the 70-271 exam has the XP Pro trial as stated in the editorial review) When I tried to install the free trial it had already expired. Apparently, the free trial begins when the book is purchased, and not when the software is installed. Therefore, if you wait to install it you will not get the full 180 days, and the 180 days includes the time it takes to ship the book to you. I really needed the free trial. I was saving it until I needed it, and I ended up buying Office Professional 2003 instead. Oh well, the book gets a 3 anyways because it needs supplemental material to prepare for the exam. All in all a good reference for XP, very handy to have around. It is very complete and the entire book is also included in the CD so its portable.

Summary: Reliability of the vendor and cost of the book
The vendor surprised me in delivering the book in two days. Also the book came with an e-book which I used on my dual monitor set up. It is fantastic to be able to read the e-book on one monitor and then the program on another.

Also the book was 1/2 the cost than Barns and Noble.

I would definately use this vendor again. He is a great asset to Amazon.com

Summary: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Resource Kit
This book is amazing for learning Windows xp Professional. Even though I have a different version of XP it helped with tweaking the computer's graphics and multimedia. It is good book if you are staying at home on a rainy day and want to tinker with your pc. The book is thorough and covers installation to troubleshooting. I haven't read all of it yet because it is like a encyclopedia but from what I have seen it has a lot to offer a newbie or someone who is more advanced.

Summary: It is useful, but....
The book is a good reference, but I find it a bit more than needed for a beginer, while less than an admin would want. The tools are very helpful as well.

I do not own the book mainly because the majority of it is available online at Microsoft's website. You can save yourself a good sum of money getting the info there.

Nowhere did it indicate on the Amazon site that it had limits of file size. Wouldn't one assume that if you are selling a "student" verson, that it will be able to run your school files? Don't buy it if you are a college student and need this software to complete your projects. I wasted $80 plus dollars. Summary: very good- BUT
I passed my test first time out of the chute. Study, study, study! MS has an excellent practice CD that I think I wore out (j/k) but they had a lot of sims where you pull in order from the right side to the left side type of problems. Don't get hung up on those, the MS test wants to see if you know how the back end of things like file permissions, basic to dynamic disks, etc work. There were none of these type questions on the test. The book is very thorough, I've been doing this hands-on for 5+ yrs and was nice to see "why and how" things happen when I do things. Read with an open mind, it may seem redundant but you'll be surprised how much back end knowledge you'll gain.

Summary: Good but....
It's from Microsoft, so it's BORING!! And they don't seem to be able to say desktop support technician without supplying us with the acronym DST over and over again. All right, I get it!

Other than that, I was surprised at the number of inaccuracies (even in their answers to lesson review questions, e.g. chapter 5, lesson 3, question 2) and how bad the index is - I came to assume that I wasn't going to find what I was looking for.

It's OK but you have to be alert because the prose will put you to sleep and because they keep getting the details wrong - maybe the book needs a service pack.

Summary: Great Resource for Exam
I just want to say using this book along with on the job experience was a great resource for passing the exam. If you don't have on the job experience you will need to study alot longer, but for those who are experienced the book will cover topics that you may not deal with everyday. It helps considerable in preparing for the exam. I was very impressed on how ready I was to take the exam after going through each lessons practice questions. The questions on the actual exam a are very closely related.
