Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: Ok coverage but lots of mistakes No book can really cover the entire material but the no. of typos, mistakes and incorrect code samples is really exasperating ... however if you are willing to supplement study by yourself, the practise questions and exams are sufficently indicative of the real exam. Summary: great certification tool!!! great certification tool!!! but u will need also transcenders for exam preparation. contact me on my gmail account (certstuff). i will send u a list of transcenders i can sell u, 10$ each one. thnks Summary: Terrible book!!..do NOT buy till a second edition! I am already MCP and had read many training kits, but this would be with no doubt the worst, i will list my impression about this book in terms of the many negatives and rare positives i found. NEGATIVES: *chapters are mixed up with lessons, and both are VERY poorly organized, with ambiguos titles for chapters(like instrumentation , interoperation)you will be very lucky if you could guess the contents based on the titles! *Very poor editing , you find many copy and paste errors in code, duplicated figures and questions to chapters in wrong place. *finally and MOST IMPORTANT, providing MISLEADING and WRONG information(confirmed after contacting authors). *does NOT cover even 50% of exam, i had to go to MSDN and other resources. POSITIVES *you get 15% discount voucher for the exam. *authors are aware of their mistakes and are striving to make a better edition. I would suggest that you dont buy this book unless you are in a hurry for the exam and /or this book is your only choice(another TK is on its way out). Summary: |
| The Data Warehouse Toolkit: The Complete Guide to Dimensional Modeling (Second Edition)
Publisher: Wiley |
|
| ISBN: 0471200247 List Price: $55.00 Amazon Price: $47.18 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Very solid book As someone new to OLAP, I found this book to be VERY helpful really getting a solid handle on OLAP. My company needed to understand and move forward on building a OLAP solution. This book helped my get a handle on what we needed to do, and a high level of how to go about it. This is the first book I'd recommend to anyone interested in OLAP. Summary: More than just a great read In my mind this book is defintely the most definitive guide to dimensional modeling. Although there are some chapters (the last two that deals with process and other issues, the biggest part of the book is solely about dimensional modeling. Yes the first chapter deals with what it is (in general), why we would like to use dimensional modeling and some myths and caveats. However, from chapter 2 through 12, the book is hand-on. Chapters 2 - 5 is for me the most impressive chapters of the book as it takes several business processes that is common in many businesses and discuss the design of the star cshemas in great depth. However, nowhere in the book is any design upheld as a panacea -- everywhere the book discusses at great length the possible problems and the design decisions to be made. It thus emphasizes that there is no "one-size fits all" in dimensioanl modeling. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 deals with CRM, Accounting and HR respectively, while chapters 9 - 14 deals with different industries and their peculiar problems. The industrues are: Telecomms and utilities, Transportation, Education, Healthcare and e-commerce. Each chapter introduces new design guidelines and new problem areas anbd their possible solutions. Chapter 15 deals with the Insurance industry and essentially serves as a nicesummary of the proposed techniques as most are emplyed in the Insurance case study. If you do not have a fairly good understanding of dimensional modeling after reading this text I would be very surprised. However, it is more than just a read to know about dimensional modeling. The way the case studies are handled and the problems identified and discussed also makes it a true reference book. I think evrybody involved in dimensional modeling should have one on his/her desk. Summary: The standard If you only have time to read one book about dwh, read this one. It gives beguinners a complete overview about the most important aspects (technologies and techniques) involved, for the advanced one this book a good reverece (especially in terms of data modelling). His Lifecyle approach is still the standard in the industry for analytical systems. I've been working now for several years in the industry and this book has helped me more than anything else, because Kimball shows you the true problems you usually face during implementing dss and provides practical and useful solutions. | Official (ISC)2 Guide to the CISSP Exam
Publisher: AUERBACH |
||
| ISBN: 084931707X List Price: $69.95 Amazon Price: $69.95 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Good book, but not end-all be-all A very useful resource for anybody interested in the field of Information Security. It provides an overview of the 10 bodies of knowledge that candidates for the CISSP exam are required to master. However, while this book is excellent as reference material, it is not as suitable as a study guide. Due to the nature of the book (it is authorized by many different writers), there is quite a bit of repetition of material, and slightly different viewpoints on what often appears to be the same issue. Sometimes, the differences between the viewpoints are not clearly articulated, which may lead to confusion. All in all, a good book and well worth the price. Summary: Must have for the exam This book is a must because it covers all materials for the exam. If it isn't on here it's not on the exam. It presents the official view for the purpose of the exam. However it's not a good book to *learn* the materials because in general it's not written as well as it could be. I also uncovered at least one error. Anyway use other book(s) to learn the materials. I used Sybex. You want to find a way to ensure that when reading other books you don't waste time reading materials *not* in this book. Read this book at least twice, the second time the few days before the exam. I passed the exam on the first try in July 2006. Summary: BUY THIS BOOK Make sure its the current version, copyright 2004. It has the best knowledge tester. Take it again and again till you get 1000 points. I'm not kidding. The other books are a waste of money and only endow the author with undue kudo's. I have all of them. They do not reflect the test I took and failed because I relied on these authors. Get the offical guide. Go to the site and get with a study group so you can ask "Senerio" questions. I would not take this test unless you have at least 4-5 years experience in a broad range of domains. Nothing in the world will prep you for this test. Boot-camps included. Stick with the official guide. And pray you don't get the test I did. Summary: |

Publisher: Sybex |

| ISBN: 0782143911 List Price: $49.99 Amazon Price: $31.49 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: Mediocre explanations, poorly proofread. If you're searching for a CCNA study guide, I'd advise looking elsewhere. While reading, I've noticed many typographical errors, poor editing, and in one case, an entire paragraph repeated for no apparent reason... and I'm only up to chapter five. Many of the explanations are difficult to understand at best. I frequently find myself searching other resources while trying to make sense of the incomplete and often confusing material. If you must get this guide, wait for the sixth edition. Hopefully, it will have gone through a more thorough proofing process. Summary: Sqeaked by with an 850 I used this book solely to study for the CCNA (2nd attempt). By the time I finished this book, I was able to master the practice tests on the enclosed CD. I found the actual CCNA questions to be much harder than the Sybex practice quetions. My coworkers used the Cisco Press books and passed easily. Todd Lammle's book is a great resource for learning subnetting; which is crucial to success on the CCNA. I would recommend the book for CCNA prep, but not as a sole resource. Summary: Good Book If you want to quickly understand Cisco networks this is a must read. I read the book twice over in one month and it basically gives you a sound knowlege of Cisco stuff. The labs are execellent. Gives you good CLI knowlege. The book helps demystify subnetting I can do it quickly now..very important in an exam scenario where you dont have time..I also liked the Frame Relay section Summary: |

Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional |
|
| ISBN: 0201633469 List Price: $74.99 Amazon Price: $63.06 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: VERY Essential I've taken several university-level courses in Network design and security and I have to say that this book, which is a very easy read, surpassed everything that I'd learned in my classes. If you want to work in the Networking industry, this book is a must-have. Summary: Best-of-class book at understanding TCP/IP "TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1 - The Protocols" by Richard Stevens is probably THE book which I reference most often of any I.T. book I have. I believe I am on my third or fourth dog-eared copy (either the book becomes too worn out from overuse or, I think, a mischievous co-worker permanently borrowed one copy). Any book where I have probably spent over $200 in buying, and rebuying must be worth it - and "TCP/IP Illustrated" is worth the money! I think you can get an idea of how great the book is from other reviews here. Rather than repeat the same raves, allow me to mention that it still amazes me, the amount of NEW books that are published that either cites, gives thanks or credits this book - Network Intrusion Detection, 3rd edition; The TAO of Network Security Monitoring; and Gray Hat Hacking are just three recent books which all mention "TCP/IP Illustrated" in their index. "TCP/IP Illustrated" is an excellent guide for any network or systems admin. Is the material presented in this book a little dated? - Yes. Can you probably find the same material on the web? - Yes. Do you want the ONE book where you can find your TCP/IP answers? - YES! You won't be disappointed with "TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1". I give this book 5 pings out of 5: !!!!! Summary: Excellent Definitely my favorite book on TCP/IP. Doesn't nmatter if it's somehow out of date, if you need to *understand* TCP/IP you need to go thru this book.Illustrations and clear explanations are a strong point of the book. And also a lot of references to CLI both for *nix and Windows based systems. Also useful for networking troubleshooting and TCP optimizing. If you need a book on TCP/IP this is what you want to buy. | Mastering Windows Server 2003
Publisher: Sybex |
|
| ISBN: 0782141307 List Price: $59.99 Amazon Price: $37.79 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: All-in-one I'm often leery of the computer books that try to cram everything about a given technology under one cover, but Mastering Windows Server 2003 proved the exception to the rule. I bought this book along with Russel and Crawford's Windows Server 2003 Administrator Guide, and I feel that Minasi's was the better of the two. This book covers all the major tasks you will be asked to do with Windows Server 2003. Beginners should buy this book. I've come across several random problems when dealing with my own 2003 servers, and what makes Minasi's book superior is that the answer is always there. Disk usage, IPSec, Active Directory, IIS: all these topics are covered with satisfactory depth. I knew I had a comprehensive book when I needed to change the default drive letters of my Windows machine and found the answer within. The only negatives I would give this book are the padding (with the obligatory `History of the Internet') and the physical weight of the book. It is a one-stop-shop, however, so those complaints are largely trivial. The Windows Server 2003 Administrator's Guide by Russel and Crawford covers similar material, but Minasi gives enough information to fully apply the knowledge. Russel and Crawford were just too brief in the sections that I needed, so I would recommend Mastering Windows Server 2003 over all the others I have read. Interestingly, many of the examples in both tomes are copied almost verbatim from the Microsoft website. It may be worth your time to look there before buying. Summary: Loaded with information, but not flawless This book covers an amazing body of knowledge, and explains it in a comprehensible and practical manner (although it can get repetitive at times). But because it tries to make you an expert on everything at once - from DNS to security - it falls short of what appears to be its most ambitious goal, skipping some important issues altogether. Summary: the book made understand dns I have bought minasi's book after reading 4, 5 page in a book store. Those pages were about DNS that I had never been able to find a single book explaining how to implement DNS in a real life environment in a clear language , yet detailed. Since this is the first review I have ever written, I would like to emphasize on two aspect of the book which makes the book different from the others. First , All scenarios in the book are real life situation that IT person can be face in real project. Explanations are so much detailed that you can actually configure your system step by step by following the book. Second, The actula reason why i bought the book, Mark discusses underlying technology in a detailed conceptual way, that gave me the overall understanding and insight of what really is going on. The books never makes you confused. Virtually every aspect of networking are covered. If you are tying to learn or working with windows network, this book is a must. I like saying that , to know something in deep is a skill which many people posseses, but to teach what you know to other people and make them really understand what you know is a kind of skill, unfortunately, few of us posses. Mark minasi is definelty one of those people. I hope he will continue sharing his knowledge by writing Onder, Toronto/canada Summary: |
