Summary: Great Book for a great price
I received my order fairly quickly and the book was great. I would definately order from them again.
Summary: The Standard by Which Others are Compared
It's difficult to write a review of this book because most of the people who are even thinking of buying it have probably used it already. They have seen it in the library, their professors have shown it to them, or it is required for the course they are taking.

So what I am going to do is talk about the differences and updates in this the sixth edition.

1. Icons - Locator Icons are used to allow the reader to quickly locate each important concept within the chapter.

2. Clinical Controversies -- showing that the understansing of drugs isn't perfect, but evolving.

3. Documentation to improve billing and general communications.

4. A chapter on Solid-Organ Transplantation.

5. Expanded coverage of dermatological conditions: Acne Vulgaris, Psoriasis, Atopic Dermatitis.

6. New chapter on dermatologic drug reactions.

Finally the on-line web site devoted to this publication is greatly expanded and enlarged.
Summary: Best Textbook for Pharmacotherapy
The 2005 edition of Pharmacotherapy is one of the best investments I have ever made. It is a valuable tool in mentoring, teaching and precepting pharmacy students. I use the helpful chapter objectives to zero in on key concepts and learning objectives. At the end of each chapter there are short, well-written quiz questions that serve to reinforce important information. The companion website is well structured and easy to navigate. The icing on the cake is the ability to download an e-version of the text on my computer, allowing convenient access to the text at work. (Each textbook has a code and directions good for one down-load). All in all, this is an excellent resource that would be a great reference text for anyone practicing, teaching or studying the profession of pharmacy.

Summary: Great staple for anyone in the medical field
Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary is all encompassing, defining the simplest to the most complex terms. To be honest, however, I rarely even open it because it came with access to their website for a 6 mo trial. Since I do most of my work (I'm still in school) on the computer, it's much easier for me to run a search than go get the book. Potential buyers: this is more of a "dictionary" than encyclopedia. You're not going to get long explanations but short definitions, otherwise it would be volumes and volumes long. One more thing: it's a very pretty book - well bound; having it on your book shelf makes you look like you actually might know what you're doing!!
Summary: Taber's Medical Dictionary
I really love the dictionary. It's my first time using a medical dictionary and I find it very informative. Just about any medical term you looked up had a detailed and descriptive meaning so you could easily understand the medical term. Another feature I particularly liked was the illustrations on some of the medical terms to give you a more comprehensive understanding of the meaning of the word. Some terminology of particular diseases gives symptoms, treatment and prevention information which is detrimental to understanding the disease and what can be done. Taber's Dictionary is number 1 on my list.
Summary: insta brain
I used this so much in pathophysiology and am sure I will continue using it through nursing school. There are words that I just don't know, then I look it up--- then ta da... I know what it means. :-)

Summary: Solid foundation for the MCAT
Ek bio - this is the STUFF!! I pwned the BS MCAT by reading this book 3 times and difficult topics 2-3 more times. Was able to teach myself microbiology and human physiology with this book. you don't need advance classes like genetics, cell bio, physiology, microbiology, biochemistry etc.

EK Orgo- Very condensed. Excellent chapter on experiments. Very solid review book but Bio book is still tops. note cards tear out of book that's on heavy stock of paper. memorize those. I needed to use a chart from my Pavia Ochem lab manual to figure out solubilities. Solubility Test is CRUCIAL for MCAT passages.

EK Chemistry - Good book. Wish it had more examples in the Acid/base chemistry. Electrochem chapter probably needs a small amount of further explanation. Everything else is solid. Supplemented with textbook and kaplan comprehensive review(for more examples of problems). One caveat: I took general chem well over 10+ years ago.

EK Physics - Good book. E&M chapters needs more work. The Thermo chapter is actually very good. Thermo is just a tough topic. Should have an example on incline planes explained in the readings before heading into problems. The Optics chapter is actually very good if you spend some time on it. This is a solid book but I had to supplement 2 chapters with a physics text book and kaplan comprehensive review(for more examples of problems). One caveat: I took physics well over 10+ years ago.

The end of chapter topic questions in EK PS/BS are right on par with the MCAT. I redid these with each reading and can say they are challenging so that you are not going to simply memorize the answers. You really need to activate the thought process. the 30 minute exams are great as well. Don't do the 30 minute exams until you feel comfortable with the material.

If I took Chemistry and Physics within the last 2 years like I did with orgo and bio I'm sure I would not need to supplement with textbooks. When I took the exam I only completed basic sciences so need for upper division science classes. Get the AAMC MCAT Topic list then be sure to buy AAMC exams and EK Verbal 101. With each passing week concentrate on your weaknesses and cut back on topics you have mastered. August 2005 MCAT score: 10P 10V 12B
Summary: Manageable study program
After being away from college for 10 years, I have found the MCAT review very comprehensive and manageable. The subjects are divided into separate books, which makes them very portable. The diagrams are fantastic, and the authors' sidenotes clarify what you need to know outright versus what's background info. If you need further help, there are Examcrackers resources for that too, such as flashcards and extra questions for each subject, so you don't have to pay for what you don't need. It is somewhat tailored for those with strong science skills, and weak verbal--the Verbal Reasoning book really walks you through the basics. Since that is my strong suit, I don't need my hand held for that, while I do for Physics, so I guess my only complaint would be that they assume you're a science wizard and verbal dummy, so those of us with the opposite skills don't get the same benefit of that stereotype. I know, probably most medical students fit that mold, but that doesn't mean those of us who have to work a tad harder don't belong in the profession--once you know it, you know it. There's room for all types, as well as a need! Good program overall, I'm very pleased, and would recommend to anyone.
Summary: Exceptional Book and a lot of material
This book is worth the price! It gives you a lot of material to work with. I studied these the second time I took the MCAT for a period of 4-5 weeks. After which I took my old Princeton exams, I aced them without even touching my old Princeton notes. While admissionsmystery .com book is great/insightful for AMCAS application strategy, I think these set of books are great for the MCAT.

Summary: if you have to throw away $150...
If you actually buy this book you're paying for the illustrations. Don't waste your time actually reading it, the presentation of the material is ponderous and completely unimaginative. The chapter on immunology is one of the worst I've seen anywhere.

The COVER of the book speaks volumes for its content. I'd be afraid to be seen in public with it.
Summary: X and Y chromosomes
A more serious omission is the absense of the x chromosome from the glossary though that y is there, unconsciously reinforcing that men are incomplete females? Males come equipped with beefed up sixpacks whereas the woman look like demure little housewives. Artists have tried to depict other races but the gender representation is pathetic. A heterosexist pro-male interpretation of human sexuality is found throughout the book, which can be annoying. Some of the comments obviously written with students in mind are patronizing. The layout is repetitious and and at times quite unstimulating. The best detail was why a chicken breast is white considering its a muscle.
Summary: laughable omission
How can this really be an Anatomy and Physiology textbook written by a Phd? There is not one picture or drawing of a male foreskin (prepuce). One does not have to wonder why the medical community is so ill prepared to deal with a normal male body.

Summary: Excellent Reference Book
This is an excellent book to have to complement your clinical internal medicine rotations; it presents the mecanisms and patho-physiology the disease manifests in a very well and thoroughly fashion, along with the management and interventions.
Summary: The Gold Standard in Color
I've been using the online edition of Harrison's 16th for a while now, and only just got the physical book. Even though the print is tiny and there's a dearth of white space to rest your eyes, the colorized text boxes are a big help. I really like the Treatment boxes in with color-coordinated headings - it makes it much easier to get to the heart of what you're looking for. Also, the charts in color make a difference that you don't necessarily appreciate in the online version.

Harrison's is of course The Bible of internal medicine. No other text I know of contains quite the wealth of information on pretty much every topic in internal medicine. This edition lives up to its stellar reputation in the IM world.
Summary: An Excellent and Ideal Medical Encyclopaedia
The information highway demands regular and frequent update of knowledge in the wake of its rapid expansion and progress. It is a Himalayan task for any writer of a textbook of Medicine to cope with recent trends and developments and meticulously weed out the old and the outdated. The editor, Professor Dennis Kasper and his colleagues, have successfully enriched the existing literature on Medicine by putting most of the relevant materials in the sixteenth edition of the book, Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, thus providing the teachers and students an extensive coverage of the subject. Special care has been taken to elucidate clearly the prognosis, diagnosis and management of diseases with suitable illustrations and algorithms to assist postgraduate students in particular in their preparation for examinations. The colour illustrations make the book very reader- friendly. Salient points have been listed and headings made for ready reference. This book presents a synoptic view of the entire body of medicine. There is not an iota of doubt that this book would be invaluable to all students of medicine at the postgraduate level right from their first day of posting in the medical wards.

Summary: Best textbook from second year!!
I got alot of [...] from my classmates for "wasting time" reading this book. Most people will tell you that it's too detailed and too long. But I feel that Robbins does a great job of weaving in high yield details from the basic sciences (Physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, anatomy, pathophysiology) into the material presented, so that you're not JUST studying pathology as you read through. I am a "network" learner, which means the more that I can connect what I'm reading with things I already know, the more easily I remember it. If you prefer learning this way, reading Big Robbins is a better use of your time than reading Basic Pathology or Fetal Robbins over and over again. To add some more weight to my words, I honored every class of second year EXCEPT for behavioral science, which, interestingly, gets no love from Robbins. I literally feel like half of what I learned second year I learned from reading Robbins, or at least is mentioned in Robbins if I learned it in another class. When I was studying for Step 1, Robbins served as an excellent reference for pretty much all the basic sciences as well as pathology. As much as I love this book, I unfortunately cannot boast that I read the whole thing through once. I'm gonna take a stab at it during 3rd and 4th year though...
Summary: The bible, but use it like Harrison's
Don't try to read this monster unless your going into Pathology. It's very well written, but you just don't have time to cover this many details. You need to focus more on the Boards relevant material which is covered in books MUCH smaller (Rapid Review or BRS Path).

That said, this book has outstanding pictures, tables and diagrams. Moreover, even with the Internet and Wikipedia, this is an indespensible reference tool to look up areas that you've forgotten or aren't clear on and do reports on case studies. I purchased this book and Harrison's knowing full well that I wouldn't getting money out of them until Residency.
Summary: One hundred dollar text. One dollar binding.
Much has been written about the quality of the text in this volume, and really, I agree with most of it. Robbins is a comprehensive textbook of human pathology, and is well written, though perhaps it could use a few more illustrations. Based on the text alone, I'd give it four or five stars.

The binding, however, is anemic, and worthy of one, or perhaps two stars. I have never seen a book's binding fail so regularly nor so spectacularly as I have with this book. After one year of use, my copy needed to be rebound. Several of my classmates have also had theirs rebound, or are about to. Several others have reinforced their copies with tape. One classmate had his book's binding fail entirely; he now has two or three pieces and carries whichever piece he is reading. This book bears a price tag of over $100, and I don't feel that I've gotten my money's worth. I may not have babied this book, but I haven't abused it, either.

That said, Robbins is *the* pathology text, and it is because it's a *good* pathology text. If you study at a computer, the online version of the text is very useable and easily searchable (easier to search through than the hard copy, actually,) and though of course you can't use a highlighter or take notes in the margins, you can take notes and bookmark sections.

Final analysis? Yes, buy this book. But have a plan in place for when the binding goes.

Summary: Incomparable
You've got to have a Netter's Atlas on hand. You never know when you'll need it. Even if you are well out of medical school, well cocooned in your tight little sub-specialty, you still need Netter. You never know when your elderly neighbor is going to knock on your door and ask you precisely which muscle in her back hurts when she stands up, just to pick a random example.

But especially for learning the anatomy in the first place, both the structure and function, there is nothing that compares. The level of detail is astounding, the care and thought put into every illustration is staggering.

And you really should have the newest edition, edited in part by the great Dr. Hanson from the University of Rochester, with over 10,000 anatomical terms, and many illustrations now correlated with MRI images. You know what I did? I gave my old Netter's to my nephew and bought the new one. He's into science, has kid's books on anatomy. Why don't you do that? Give your old Netter's, cadaveric juice stains and all, to a young eager kid, be a little ceremonial about it, then get on Amazon and buy the newest edition. Then email me and say, "thanks, you were right about that."

Summary: Can you imagine that the pictures drawn by Netter are far much clearer than what we saw during dissections?
I remembered that when we did dissections in the anatomy class throughout the anatomy classes of the 1st 2 years, one student per table (who do not want to touch the corpse) would be responsible to bring and hold the Netter for the entire lesson. Netter really helped us a lot! I have browsed many other anatomy atlas and have not yet found one that is better than Netter. Although some atlases contain real pictures, they are not as clear as that in Netter! I can say, "Netter + Moore" is the golden combination for anatomy!

When I studied neuroanatomy after finishing the anatomy, Netter still helped me a lot!

Netter rocks!
Summary: Visual Learner
If "a picture could say a thousand words", this book is it. I am an LPN turned Medical Coder. The book has made Anatomy `come alive'. I struggled through 2 anatomy/physiology classes in the above 2 programs & still did not feel like I understood. If you are a visual learner, this book is a must. It does have to be supplemented with written text as others have said, I use a google search when my textbooks are not enough. To determine if this book would be helpful, think of it like this, if you put together a big entertainment center, which would you find more helpful: diagrams of where each screw, nut & bolt gets attached to what piece, OR by reading a description of each piece & the description of the piece it gets attached to. For me its diagrams, so the book for me was well worth the cost ($69 + tax at Barnes & Noble, 3rd edition, soft cover).

Summary: Perhaps, the book is not horrible and it is just my class
This book tries so hard to make social and cultural variances seem like scientific fact. Of course, a nursing text should discuss patient care but not as always black and white; it edges on stereotyping at times. Conversely, if physiology is mentioned, the science behind the concept is often ignored. I think this book is based on pseudo-science at times.

Perhaps, it is just my class that has confused me because the book, lecture and exams have nothing to do with each other; so, consequently, the book seems less relevant.

The procedures in the back of each chapter are helpful.
Summary: Good soruce of information
This book provides good explanations for the various processes and procedures of nursing. I really like the additional material such as the CD and the website.
Summary: Book Review
The book was as advertised -- new and unmarked. The CD package had not been opened. I am very satisfied with my purchase and the savings.
