Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: best book to pass the oca 10g exam i buy this book together with sybex's book and have passed the oca exam with 87% score (less than what i expected though). i found this book easier to read and understand compared to sybex's book, and the many-but-short chapters works better for me. if you could only choose one book to pass the 1Z0-042 exam then this is definitely the best choice. but don't forget to practise what you read (although the book makes it looks so simple), you'll remember more by trying each exercise in this book. Summary: Good OCP Preparation I used this book to (sucessfully) prepare for the OCA exam. It is well structured and important points for the exam are specially highlighted. This makes the content memorable and easy to learn. The review questions are pretty good. I recommend getting the question set of www.selftestsoftware.com, too. They are not exactly like in the exam (like TestKing) but representative. I used this book and the SYBEX OCA preparation (OCA: Oracle 10g Administration I Study Guide (1Z0-042) by Chip Dawes) and found this one clearly superior. Still, it is not perfect: There was some exam-relevant details missing, e.g. for data pump. So check with the selftest questions and get the missing information from the Oracle manuals on the net. Summary: Best Book for Exam Preparation I m really thankful to amazon.com to supply book, which is really good for exam preparation Regards Ranjana Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Extensive 10g RAC information. Impressive topic coverage! Really good book. I found it very useful as it covers almost all topics from DBA prospective. Information is technical enough for an experienced DBA or Developer. Book is well structured and it is easy to follow the material cover to cover. Up to date information in all aspects (Oracle binary set up, OS , networking and development). Very useful appendix, which guides you through various tasks. Easy to find information you require. One of the best (if not the best) Oracle 10g RAC books on the market. Of course, it cannot cover literally all topics, but it is definitely a great effort. Thank you Murali! Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Great Stuff The kit is really great and very helpful for those who is aspiring for Oracle 10g certification.I recommend one should have this. Thanks Bhaskar Mylavarapu Senior DBA - Oracle 10g. Summary: It's a mistake to buy this book... I found some answers are not related with the questions. Some typo error and mislead information. Summary: OCP Oracle 10g Administration II Study Guide I installed the OCA ebook software to read the OCA book and it succeeded. But then I installed the OCP ebook software and when I bring it up to read the book online, the Adobe Reader comes up, waits 60 seconds with a blank screen, and then crashes. P.S. I'm dissatisfied with having to do an install just to read the document online... and it FAILS! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Expert Oracle Database Architecture Book review This is the first book I have read from Tom Kyte. I use his web site often and appreciate all the work he does to maintain the "AskTom" site. The book is excellent. Tom's approach to helping you understand the concepts are displayed well with code examples. You will read a passage and then see an example to really enforce the principle. The examples support the concepts and using both together helped me out a great deal. The chapters on architecure and indexes I found to be really helpful. The architecure chapter goes in much needed detail as so many books just glance over the different Oracle processes. What the processes are used for and how they interact with each other is well documented. The index chapter helped me understand how indexes operate at a block level and also what indexes are best for a given situation. At the end of the index chapter Tom has a section on Myth's and this section should be required reading for all DBAs and developers. Something else I got from the book are methods for writing SQL and tuning it. The SQL that the author puts together looks so easy and natural for him to write. He is a master of SQL*Plus and that is a side benefit to reading the book. The techniques I picked up from reading Toms examples will help me just as much or more so than content of the book. This book is an excellent addition to my Oracle collection of books and I highly recommend reading it. Summary: Bridges gap between DBA and Developer- Tom's Best yet I have all of Tom's earlier books and while he does recap some things I like the new features he mentions in 10g. Hands down the best overall reference for becoming an Oracle DBA and developer- I like the sections on partioning, indexes, tables and development. I also like the included CD that has the older editions which is nice for bringing to work or on the road. Summary: Good book This is a good book on ORACLE. For those who already have the previous 8i edition this is one of the two parts with some 9i/10g coverage. It is a shame that the Indian edition doesn't carry the CD. Summary: |
| Oracle Database 10g: The Complete Reference (Osborne ORACLE Press Series)

| ISBN: 0072253517 List Price: $69.99 Amazon Price: $44.09 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Oracle is Oracle The book speaks on most of the database issues that can come up when using Oracle. It is more of a Reference manual instead of going to each topic in detail. This can be useful when one wanted to quickly get the relevent information. Summary: Not so complete... With a 1200+ page book, entitled "The Complete Reference", I would have expected much more information about proper configuration. Properly configuring Oracle (I'm running it on Unix) is no trivial matter and I found this book to be severely lacking. While it seems like a good reference to have (hence 3 / 5 stars), it looks like I'm going to have to look for other resources. Summary: Disappointed--tries to cover too much This sounded like a good book, judging by the reviews here, but being relatively new to the Oracle world, I haven't found this book terribly useful so far. Oracle's docs have been much more helpful and detailed. I was hoping for a book that shared the author's experience and tips and helped the reader make decisions, but this seems to be largely a command reference, covering many topics superficially. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: It is an excellent DBA Handbook The book is excellent in the sense that it went straight to the essential and important topics. I am surprised that they did cover a lot of topic in a few pages. The book does help if you have some experience with oracle and especially with 10g. If you are new to oracle I am pretty sure you pick up the wrong book and you will be shaken by the concepts in the book. Overall I recommend this book if you are already familiar with 10g. Summary: Great Book. Not for Beginners This book is definitely not for beginners. If you already have a working knowledge of how to operate an Oracle database, this book will provide a more solid foundation for your knowledge. I particularly found its chapters on RAC and High Availability helpful. The best part of this book is that it covers the most essential knowledge to becoming a highly competent Oracle DBA without trying to be a reference for every Oracle topic. I highly recommend this book. Summary: Bumpy Ride I'm learning database administration for the first time, so I've been sequentially working through this book. I've made it past 200 pages running all of the commands and scripts; however, I've had to do a lot of outside research in the product documentation and internet forums to get the stuff to work. I've marked up the margins of this book like crazy. Key pieces of the examples are omitted, and some information is just plain wrong (e.g. names of AWR SQL scripts). Being forced to do outside research can help you learn the material better I guess, but the time could probably be better spent if all you want is your certification. One of their commands to move EM from SYSAUX to another tablespace totally corrupted my database console service and forced me to install a new database instance. Buy this book if you're into pain and self-torment. Summary: |
| Oracle Database 10g Linux Administration
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media |
|
| ISBN: 0072230533 List Price: $49.99 Amazon Price: $31.49 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Very satisfied with the contents If you read the editorial review: It is stated that the book is about installing and configuring Oracle Database 10g on Linux. Yes, the author did explain clearly the process of installing and configuring the Oracle 10g on Linux. He also covered a few more topics such as HA (High Availability), Tuning SQL, RAC, Replication, Index and Partitioning ... but not in depth. But the coverage is acceptable and useful. Do buy this book and you will find it useful if you love Oracle DBMS running on LINUX platform. Summary: Good intro to Oracle 10g for Linux As an experienced Oracle DBA, I wanted a nice text that covers Linux specifics to Oracle 10g. This book is okay not perfect but the only real Oracle 10g for Linux book on the market. Good 1. RAC coverage is decent 2. Linux tuning for Oracle is nice Bad 1. Data Guard coverage is very weak 2. No workarounds for installation issues with Linux and Oracle So I give it 3 stars because its not bad but not great. I hope that the other Linux for Oracle RAC book that comes out next year is better. Summary: lots of buzzwords but no useful info I was very anxious for this book to come out since it had a very lucrative table of contents with all the "right" stuff in it. Unfortunately I found the book to have a lot of unneeded info such as history of Oracle, history of Linux, Unix, overview of Oracle products, etc junk. If you an Oracle professional, you probably know all of this anyways. I was hoping to find "trade secrets" and "best pratices of ORacle on Linux" that will help me , but instead found very basic descriptive information, nothing detailed in particular. There is nothing "special" about Oracle architecture, backup and recovery in this book that refers to Linux that you can't find in any other oracle 10g book. The only useful detail that I found is remapping of kernel base when using Large memory for SGA, but that also can be dug out of OTN. Also you will find a much better overview of Linux from any "Linux Administration" book. Overall this book may be ok for a newbie as introduction, but if you are past that stage, I would say pass on this one. Summary: |
| Oracle Discoverer 10g Handbook (Oracle)
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Osborne Media |
|
| ISBN: 0072262141 List Price: $69.99 Amazon Price: $44.09 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Loved it This is THE book to get for Oracle Discoverer. What more can I say, it's well written, clear with good examples. Summary: Complete, comprehensive coverage Oracle Discoverer is a complex tool and much more than a single understanding of the functionality is required to use it effectively for business intelligence. Armstrong-Smith has achieved this goal in a pragmatic book that not only shows the "how" but the "why", with simple illustrative examples from real-world systems. Summary: Outstanding Resource! I am a neophyte to Discoverer, having just accepted a position where the primary assignment is to learn discoverer and develop a library. I think the true measure of this type of book is how well it takes someone who has little knowledge and walks them through the process of learning. Often times, this type of book slides into language or discourse that seems aimed at higher-end users or impressing people with the depth of knowledge, jargon and acronymns. In particular, because Discoverer is a tool aimed at the end-user, who may or may not have a great deal of background with Oracle databases themselves (mine is limited), this book faces the challenge of addressing the needs of both the end-user without high-end technical savvy as well as the administrator who knows Oracle backward and forward. I'm happy to say that I am rapidly gaining knowledge working through this book, as if I were sitting in a training class. The progression of this book is as follows: A. Getting Started with Discoverer 1. An Overview of Discoverer. 2. Users and Databases. 3. Getting Started in Discoverer. 4. The Workbook Wizard: The Essential Steps 5. The Workbook Wizard: The Optional Steps B. Editing the Query 6. Formatting the Output in Discoverer Desktop and Plus 7. Using Graphs to Present Data 8. Turning a Discoverer Query into a Report 9. Using Discoverer to Analyze Data 10. Business Intelligence Discoverer Viewer 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) C. Advanced Discoverer Techniques 11. Refining Items, Drilling, and Hyper-Drilling 12. Building Effective Conditions 13. Refining Parameters, Calculations, Sorting, and Percentages 14. Query Management 15. User Preferences, the Toolbar, and the Discoverer Administrator 16. Introducing Discoverer OLAP D. Using the Discoverer Administration Edition 17. Getting Started in the Administration Edition 18. Editing the Business Area 19. Interacting with the End User 20. Configuring Discoverer 21. Setting Up Portal for Use with Discoverer 22. Summary Management The appendicies are targetted and helpful. All in all, I can't say enough good about this book. It filled the need exactly and efficiently. Summary: |
