Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Don't know what all the fuss is about this book What has been stated in this book has already been stated in many others. It appears to me that as much as John Shook - and the Womack - group may know, they still lack the practical applications of Lean. I have been in Lean for 20 years and cannot gain much new info from this book. Summary: No Better Inroduction to the Tools of Lean I have been a Lean Practitioner for over twenty years and have had the privilege of learning from some of the original teachers of Lean in the United States. I have reviewed other publications on implementing LEAN Systems and this book is one of the very few that I truly appreciate. (Incidentally, please note that the author is PASCAL DENNIS, not John Shook). "Lean Production Simplified" is simply the BEST introduction to the Toyota Production System and to LEAN Tools that exists today. If you have any responsibility for leading or implementing LEAN in your organization, this would be required reading. Lean Production Simplified is an excellent investment of your time and money. If you are a company owner or President, I would recommend you start with "The Toyota Way" (the most enjoyable to read), "Lean Transformation" by Bruce A. Henderson or "Leading the Lean Initiative" by John W. Davis. If you are the "Lean Champion" in your company, another good introduction to LEAN is "Running Today's Factory". The series of shopfloor guides by Productivity Press is also helpful for your first "baby steps". Beyond that, find a real lean "sensei". A great place to find one is at your state's "MEP" (Manufacturing Extension Partnership) Center. Summary: Simple explanation of the Toyota Production System I'll keep this book on my desk and make sure that it is part of changing the culture here. Thanks for making it easy to understand the whole sytem, instead of just some of the pieces. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A Golden Nugget I have read a few business improvement novels in the past few years, but this one blew me away. I picked it up and was halfway through the book before I was forced to put it down by some prior engagements. It had a wealth of information that someone eager to learn could consume and digest without trouble, as well as a story line that kept me interested and willing to keep flipping through pages. I highly recommend this literature to anyone interested in manufacturing, lean initiatives, or reading. I wouldn't recommend this book to Amazon, because rather than buying the next book I'm probably just going to re-read this one. Summary: Excellent This is another "Business novel." The author does an effective job of communicating the philosophy of the Toyota Production System, and discussing organizational transition. Summary: Andy & Me - A look at lean tools in action Nice overview of a lean journey just kicking off. Lots of good example of lean methods, just not the same old kanban Mistake proofing, SMED materials. One lean method that really stood out was the example of Policy Deployment and how it was tied to daily management (A3 Sheets). I also like how it showed the leaders involvement from the standpoint of taking responsibility for providing training and stability. Too bad it was a spin of the Goal. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Basic mumbo jumbo I was excited to receive this book - I love learning about how other users master the techniques of Photoshop. Boy was I disappointed! I've seen these illustrations before - rehashed and rehashed - and if you're using Photoshop CS or CS2, don't waste your time. If you're still working with Photoshop 4 and have never done a collage, I guess you should buy this book. although you'll learn more on Adobe's tutorial website than you'll learn from this book! Summary: it's ok The book is not bad ,but the sample is too simple...but it has detailed walkthroughs of the creation ..so maybe it's very useful for the people who just begin to learning photoshop. Summary: Great projects, great book. I liked the projects in this book, as they really showed you how to use Photoshop to achieve professional results. Anyone who wants to learn how to combine many different images into one slick final presentation should check out this helpful guide. Summary: |
| Bonded Porcelain Restorations in the Anterior Dentition: A Biomimetic Approach

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: What a Book - a must BUY The author takes an revolutionary approach to restoring anterior teeth, a Biomimetic approach. The author goes back to basics and studies nature i.e. the form and function of natural teeth. He then studies how each tissue (dentine/enamel) behaves mechanically (when loaded) and where the forces and stresses concentrate. These findings then lay the foundation as to how teeth should be restored i.e. should they be restored so they are as strong as nature (mimic natures strength) or stronger. The author tends to favour the former approach, and goes about outlining materials and design principles that will achieve this result. He presents an extremely interesting method and commonsense approach to restoring teeth. By reading this book, it allows us to reflect upon the potential disasters (verticle root fractures, decorination) that may be caused by restoring teeth in the traditional way (crowns & posts) whereby making them stronger than nature. Summary: You must have this book This book is a must have if you enjoy doing bonded porcelain restorations and you want to see how a master does it. The lab work is unbelievable and the photography is excellent. Its like having an Ansel Adams book: you have to see how the best do it so that you have something to aspire to. The cost is pretty high, but so what. You will want to take notes when you read this. If you are really flush with cash, buy one for your lab tech. Summary: |
| Religion Explained: The Evolutionary Origins of Religious Thought
Publisher: Basic Books |

| ISBN: 0465006965 List Price: $17.50 Amazon Price: $11.38 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: New ways to think about why we think the way we do To start, this book is pretty dry. It does have its moments where it picks up the pace and you find yourself really interested in what you are reading. Most of the first half of the book, however, Boyer explains the background brain dynamics needed to understand the later application to religious thought. To me, this seems to explain primitive religious ideas and concepts, but for the more developed world religions it can only act as the base, with everything else piled on top. I liked the idea that our brains are really sophisticated computing machines. (He never compares our brains to computers but I think that is a good analogy) We have inbuilt programs, or what I like to think of as human instincts, which allow us to take in a great deal of information and create inferences about things such as other peoples' thoughts, emotional responses, and possible future actions. Boyer then goes on to show how our different inference systems react to different types of stimuli, and eventually how certain sets of systems can generate religious ideas. It's an interesting read, only if you are keen on understanding the intersection of the human animal with the sapient beings we are. Summary: Circumstantial The subject of the book is interesting but the writing style is vague and very circumstantial. What can be said in one sentence is explained in one or several paragraphs and what can be explained in one paragraph is said in a chapter or more. You don't want to put some books down once you piced them up. This book is the opposite; you cannot wait to put it down. It is very boring to read. Summary: Misses the point Boyer sees religion as a by-product of the way our minds have evolved. His "explanation"--laboriously presented in a most excruciatingly detailed manner--left this reader exhausted and a little annoyed. Much would have been gained had the text been reduced by perhaps two thirds. Although Boyer writes in a clear manner, the tedious qualifications and the needless repetitions make the book exasperating to read. But that's just the minor problem. The major problem is that after all these words, Boyer does not really explain much at all. Clearly religion of one form or another is found in virtually all human societies. Consequently it doesn't take a very sophisticated deduction to conclude that we believe the things we believe because our minds work that way. Religion is part of human nature, hard-wired to some very real extent in our brains similar to the way grammar is. What needs explaining is how religion is adaptive. If it didn't somehow increase our ability to survive and reproduce--that is, make us more fit--it would not be universal. This is the key that Boyer marches around, hovers over, and, alas, misses. As famed biologist Edward O. Wilson wrote, "When the gods are served, the Darwinian fitness of the members of the tribe is the ultimate if unrecognized beneficiary." (On Human Nature (1978) p. 184) But just how does religion increase the fitness of the members of the tribe? By making them accept their lot on earth because they will get their reward in the hereafter? As Boyer points out, this can't be the answer--at least not the entire answer--since some religions don't have a hereafter. How about increasing the coalition among members of the tribe thereby increasing cooperation and mutual trust? I think this is on the right track. If the tribe works together toward a common goal, the tribe will be more effective in dealing with the environment, and the tribe will increase. But what is the most important and demanding aspect of the human tribal environment? Other tribes! This brings us to what I think Boyer missed entirely: the war system. Religion, because it persuades people to believe in things greater than themselves, facilitates the kind of fearlessness that is most effective in killing members of the other tribe. A tribe that has a ferocious leader who is followed as one might follow a god, or one of god's representatives, is a more effective fighting unit than a tribe that doesn't have that kind of cohesiveness. If a belief system can get the young males of the tribe to lay down their lives for the good of the tribe, that tribe will take over the rich valley, the land of milk and honey, and the less fit tribe will go into the mountains or perish. If the leader of the tribe can get the tribe to see that a victory over the enemy is God's will or that God or the spirits or the angels are on the side of the chosen tribe, so much the better. To make this work people have to be able to believe in things not seen or understood, things that go bump in the night, things mysterious, frightening, things brought forth by the shaman amid smoke and ritual. But as Boyer points out, no single explanation for religion is adequate. In religion we also find the beginnings--paradoxically--of science. When the rains didn't come and the grain grasses didn't grow and the animals became few, the people asked why and wanted to know what they could do. Religion supplied the answer. Throw the sheep bones and know which way to go. By happenstance the tribe wandered in the right direction and this was remembered. Sacrifice an animal to the gods and the gods will cause the rains to return. (And if the rains don't return, you did it wrong.) This is sympathetic magic, surprisingly not mentioned specifically by Boyer, although he treats superstition at some great length. Sympathetic magic is part of almost all religions in the form of ritual and prayer. It was but a step or two (giants steps of course) from throwing salt over one's left shoulder to broadcasting plant seeds over the ground. Sympathetic magic which is at the heart of religion became, after many a moon, science. Although Professor Boyer admirably attempts to account for religion from an evolutionary point of view using an anthropologist's eye, I am afraid that he got lost in the thickets and missed the pure essence of his subject matter. I suggest he read some Edward O. Wilson and Marvin Harris (both absent from his bibliography). Harris shows how religious beliefs work to support adaptive behaviors (e.g., not eating cows in India) while Wilson will give the reader a good understanding of human psychology from an evolutionary point of view. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Best cookbook ever! This is my favorite cookbook of all time! The recipes can be a little time consuming (esp. if you have small children like me) but they are well worth the time spent. I have made the corn chowder--which my 18 month old couldn't get enough of--and the Greek salad dressing which tastes extremely authentic! I love her other salad dressings as well. The recipes use wholesome, healthy foods that are good for the whole family and you can generally substitute items that work for you (i.e. if you don't have a wheat allergy, you can use white flour, etc). My husband thinks I'm truly gourmet after making several of these recipes and I have passed the info on to all of my friends whose children have allergies. My 18 month old daughter has peanut, soy and chocolate allergies that left us wondering what we could actually feed her and this cookbook has given us the answers. Summary: Loved the chocolate layer cake! The SweetThings section of this cookbook is wonderful. When is the next cookbook coming out? May I suggest a whole book devoted to dessert? :) Summary: One of the best on my shelf I bought this book and several others when I decided to take better care of myself. My doctor suggested that I am developing new food allergies and this seemed to be one of the best books to buy. I was not disappointed. The recipes are easy to understand and offer the added bonus of offering ingredients that I believe, after a lot of research, are healthier and antibiotic, preservative and dye free. Great cookbook! Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Amazing book! If you read Larman's book, which is considered by many to be THE BOOK on OOAD, and walked away still unsure of how to apply his ideas in the real world, then this book is for you. While Larman's book reads like a college text book(No disrespect intended), this book is concise, and walks you through how to think in OOAD. By showing you many examples and the pros and cons of modeling each in different ways, you gain a much deeper understanding of the fundamental concepts. I own over 100 technical books and must say that this is by far the most USEFUL BOOK I have ever purchased! Summary: Masterful Several years ago I read a book called the Dancing Wu Li Masters in which the author concluded that what sets masters apart is that they teach the essence of a subject. By that standard Roques is truly a UML master. UML in Practice leads the reader through a number of case studies from the initial conceptual models, through functional, static and dynamic models to the resulting application design. Along the way Roques provides highly useful insights, best practices and formal patterns. UML in Practice was originally published in French and appears to have been translated by the author himself. While the translation is less than perfect (and there are a few incomprehensible sentences), on the whole the quirkiness of the language adds a bit of levity to the book. Summary: An interesting new approach! A very interesting approach to learn UML: to follow the thoughts of an expert explaining the pros and cons of various mofeling solutions. Very deep coverage of use cases, class and state diagrams. The part on OO design is fully compliant with Larman's OOAD approach. A must!!! Summary: |
