Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: An enyclopedia of English People who love English already have a few books about advanced English usage, such as Fowler, and various style guides. I love Fowler; browsing its pages is a delight. The Oxford Companion (concise ed) is different. It's much more objective, and more encylopedic. There are entries on many important linguistic terms and concepts, excellent definitions of all the grammatical terms you'll come across (what does "dative" mean?), accurate surveys of areas like what is a dialect and what isn't, and the major threads of the academic debate are presented. Every letter of the alphabet is given its history. Curious about Scouse? About the impact of Samuel Johnson and his dictionary? What is the state of opinion about the Sapir-Whorfian Hypothesis? Estuary English? Regional dialects of North America? I can't believe I haven't had this book on my shelf since the moment it was published, and I'm busy making a list of people to give it to. This a breakthrough contribution to books about English. Summary: Everything you need to know about literary terminology This book is one of the better purchases I have ever made. Every time I need a detail about the English language, literary devices and terminology, or grammatical usage, this book always has a couple of paragraphs to explain what I need to know -- and usually a handful of cross references to related topics. All with the usual careful and thorough treatment you expect from Oxford. Every library should have a copy of this book. Summary: The Oxford Companion to the English Language There are many things I would like to know about the English Language, but too few of them are here. For example the history of English is disposed of in three pages. I should have liked to have seen 30 or so. To be sure there are other historical entries, though insufficient cross referencing. The chronology following the above entry is largely of English history rather than of language history. In place of these things are pages of information one could do without; trivia relating to broadcasting or editions of dictionaries. A topical index would have been nice. Every true philologist will nonetheless want this work. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Extremely Helpful This book has deserved the five stars because it simply tells you what you need to know for the test. It contains practice questions with walkthroughs. It just doesn't tell u to remember this, it helps u out by making u write in the answere, or practice writing. It is filled with information in a clear, concise, but with some big vocabulary (that benefits you because u learn vocab for the test. <font size = 5>The best part, that other books dont have, is a "cliffnotes or Sparknotes" inside the actual book. <font size = 3> It gives u a synopsis and then talks to u about the motifs, and symbols important for the essays. It contains famous books like Invisible man, pride and prejudice, A street care named desire, and many more (only about ten books). The practice test are also great and helpful so in all, i highly recommend getting this book, like other great Barron's titles. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: 5 Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examations: English I have this book on my desk and recommend that my AP English Lit students buy it during the first week of class. It's a valuable teaching and review tool throughout the entire year. I've watched my AP students refer to this text over and over when they have questions. Great, clear explanations of important concepts. Sample exams provide solid practice. Summary: Much good, some holes. Depending on your needs, and no test prep book can be all things to all people, this could be a good supplement to other instruction. Frankly, none of these are a panacea. The multiple choice section in particular has the basics, but a student preparing for the test would need a lot more walking through the types of questions to be encountered and more practice than this book gives. Otherwise, it is as good as others on the market. You might give an edge to the Cliff's version if you had to choose just one, though having both would be a good plan, if you find these prep books useful. Being widely read in a variety of AP level lit. and writing, writing, writing, with someone to give you good feedback is the best prep. Summary: Excellent! There are a lot of review books for ap tests but I would recomend this one. I'm getting ready to take the test in may and I thought this book was very helpful in my review. They have a very straightforward helpful style..it's like an extra help session with a good, experienced teacher. Very good book.. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: 5 Steps to a 5 on the AP: Writing the AP English Essay You've got to get this book. As an AP English teacher, I found this book to be a great workbook for my students from day one of the course. It gives them a student-friendly approach to the language, practice and exams connected to the AP English course. I teach both Lit and Lang and have used it in each with tremendous success. By the way, it's a valuable resource tool for the AP English teacher, too. Summary: Ace the Exam! This is an excellent review workbook for AP English writing exams. As a high school AP teacher, I am using this as a textbook in my junior and senior English classes with much success. The text is easy to read and very visual; that is, important points are highlighted, while activities are clearly noted with eye-catching icons. Most importantly, information found in this text is accurate and pertinent. Topics include modes of discourse (narration, exposition, etc.), rhetorical strategies and devices, in addition to vocabulary work, rubrics for scoring, etc. Adequate explanation and practice activities are provided, as well as sample student essays and AP exam questions. HIGHLY recommended for both students and teachers alike! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: NOT THE OUTDATED, BORING PREP BOOK This book is the shortest, sweetest AP English Lit prep book on the market. I bought about five others, but this hits the spot. It is casual, readable, and the essay-writing advice was the BEST of all. Using the Princeton Review's method, I was able to belt out essays like never before: and I'm the type that takes my time in essay writing! BE WARNED: Nothing can replace personal motivation, extensive reading and hard studying, however!! Summary: Cracking the AP English Lit Exzm Wonderful resource - very helpful in reviewing key concepts for my students before writing the AP exam. Also good to use for ongoing review to help students with at-home practice on key concepts introduced in the course. Summary: OUTSTANDING PREP for the AP ENGLISH LIT EXAM! Highly Recommended. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Excellent Single-Volume Introduction to Old English This is not the best reader, the best grammar, or the best primer, but if you're looking to use just *one* introductory book before tackling longer readings with a dictionary, Mitchell and Robinson have created a fantastic resource. Work through and memorise the basic inflections as outlined in the introduction, then read up on the basic syntax, and then jump into the eighteen readings while slowly working through the rest of the grammar. Some initiative is required: Lessons and vocab lists aren't prepared for you. However, combined with a modicum of diligence and industry, this is a great way to learn Old English. Summary: Good for self study I have only one, minor criticism: The glossary, while otherwise admirably comprehensive and useful, does not have a few of the words in the example sentences in the chapters on grammar and syntax in Part 1. Clearly, some of these sentences have been culled from texts not in the Guide. This is a bit annoying when working your way through the grammar, as you may want- as I did- to attempt translating these sentences before looking at the given translation. But the remedy is simple: have with you a copy of "A Concise Anglo-Saxon dictionary". This book has all the words not covered in the Guide's glossary. Summary: The perfect guide This book is brilliantly thought out and executed. It makes learning Old English wonderful challenging fun. By far the best book of it's kind available. Summary: |
