Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: excellent intro to photography Back in the good old days of film photography, I used to constantly refered back this book for inspiration and guidance. This book contained many interesting and thought provoking examples of some of the masters at work and enabled readers to understand some basic "photographic rules" and how they should be applied. For example, on photographing people, the authors asked you that you should NOT ask them to "hold it" to avoid your subject looking "unnatural" by using a fast shutter speed such as 1/60 second or faster. The accompaning photography of a professional had his mother posing for him with very natural pose undoubtly used the described techniques. Anohter photo showing subjects looking away from the camera competely at ease and seeming never were aware bing filmed was used to illustrate to set the camera's control before shooting. I have personally used this rule thousands of time to photography my son. Due to circumstace (ie the energenic nature and unpredictablity of his fast moving feet), good photos were almost always obtained when I was ready to shoot BEFORE my subject (one and half year old son) were least expected and ready. In addition, I have learned more about exposure, film speed, dark room work, film perservation, and many aspects of photography from this book. As a matter of fact, I learned traditional darkroom work (yes the kind you use chemicals and enlarger) using this book. I do believe that this is not a photograpy-for-dummpy sort of book but rather a serious attempt to introduce a reader to see the wide possiblities of photography and tons of examples and "whys" of a good photograph. Why did the photographer chose to include that background? Why the photograper chose to have the subject turn slightly to the left? Why was the subject seemed distorted and her arms seemed longer than her body? Why the skier was mostly covered by snow and you can hardly see his face? Why the photographer decided not to focus the subject perfectly? I think this is an inexpensive investment for your improvement to take better pictures and no doubt you will be richly rewarded just like me. Cheers and Happy shooting! Summary: Great Source For Core Photography Information Photography, now in its eigth edition, is a great source for core photography information. As in the previous editions, the information about photography's beginnings and history is very well covered. The emphasis on film and film based cameras is alos very extensive. My only real complaint about this book is its rather sparse discussion of digital photography. The authors could have gone so much deeper in the areas of digital cameras, digital imaging and working with digital files. As the most popular high school and college photography book, I believe it is a disservice to give such little treatment on digital photography. Also, there is vertually no mention of manipulation software programs like Adobe Photoshop. No serious photographer can still completely ignore this powerful manipulation tool. Students should be learning how to use this software and this is not the book to do that. Summary: photography (8th edition) really good reference for all kinds of photography and all kinds of manipulations Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Latest edition excellent Digital photography is a fast-moving target, and this book manages to keep abreast of the latest changes with valuable information that's vital for anyone doing digital photography. It explains all the key concepts clearly and completely, with lots of advice on getting the best photographs with any type of digital camera. I would have liked additional coverage of digital SLRs, but I have found that elsewhere, and still prefer Complete Digital Photography's treatment of the broader topics. Summary: Excellent book It has everything that a lay man needs to know in order to make best use of his digital camera. Author Ben Long writes very clearly. Summary: Not what I expected I should have done extensive research prior to buying this book, it lacks a very important feature in my opinion, the sample pictures have no information on how it was taken, no shutter speed, ISO lens or F-stop guides. I later found such a book, but I will allow you to do your own research. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: A View Inside A Shrine to Self The Windsors, while they were living, epitomized style, glamour, and wit. Ultimately theirs was a wasted life, empty of meaning in the end. From the heady days of their scandalous romance, life was all downhill, a private struggle to conserve their dignity in the aftermath of the abdication. To fill this emptiness and lack of purpose in life, the Duchess obsessed on perfection; of herself, of the things she collected and of the table she set. The Windsor's sous chef spent hours sorting salad leaves into leaves of exactly the same size to be set before their guests. Their relationship was a hollow recreation of the childhood the Duke never could leave behind. Moulin de la Tuilerie, their country home outside of Paris, was the York Cottage of Edward's youth reborn. Wallis herself was Queen Mary, obsessively arranging the display of small objets and cosseting the little boy who was King. A long time servant said, "They had nothing and no-one. They were just two lonely old people." Suzy Menkes takes the reader on an interesting tour through not only of the tangible objects of this relationship, but of the relationship itself. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Excellent Book for Intermediate Photoshop Users "The Photoshop Channels Book" continues Scott Kelby's well-established tradition of creating Photoshop instructional books that are concise, written in a lively and humorous style, and take the reader right to the heart of processes. This time he delves into the potential applications of Photoshop's "mysterious" channels panel, something that most people rarely use. While other books touch lightly on the subject Kelby devotes an entire volume to its functionality, and deservedly so. The book is very well designed in a 1950's/1960's TV-channel metaphor, richly illustrated and very easy to follow. Nearly anyone can get something new from it in ten minutes or less. It's a superb work that should have a long shelf-life as Photoshop continues to evolve. Summary: Great book In response the previous reviewer who hated it, yes I'm a beginner and thanks to Mr. Kelby I'm finally getting it. Who says that Photoshop's advanced techniques should be for the Selected few. The guy knows how to teach. Makes complicated concepts seem easy. The book is very organized and easy to read. On the downside: He is using a lot of filler addressing some topics that few of us will need. Summary: Info is great.... The information in the book is really great. My problem with the book is that the author goes WAY overboard on "cutesy". His cutesy style of writing often made it hard to focus on content. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Miracle: A Celebration of New Life The book filled with unbelievable moving pictures of babies and the lovely songs on the CD make this book choice one of my favorites. Summary: some almost ghoulish Some of the Geddes photos in this book are a bit extreme - almost ghoulish - with babies under stretched sheer fabric - giving a weird, almost preborn appearance to the infant. Most of the photos, though, are beautiful and creative and just what we have come to expect from this photographer. The audio CD by Celine Dion is absolute perfection. Summary: Celebration of new Life Tender, loving, educational, informative. A perfect gift for the new mother. The CD with the songs sung by Celine Dion was an extra bonus. Well worth the price! Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great approach to Photoshop Elements 4 While the Elements 4 manual isn't exactly missing, it is no where near as complete as this one, which covers every feature in great detail. This book belongs on the shelf of every digital photographer who is using Elements. Summary: Photoshop Elements 4 The Missing Manual I adopted Photoshop Elements 4 One on One to use for a class I am teaching on Photoshop Elements 4. This book did not come with a CD. One has to go online to get the lessons that go with the book. That can be a problem for students who do not have Internet access when they are working from home. Believe it or not some people still do not have the Internet! I have used the book to gain addtional information about Photoshop Elements 4 and found it to be very good. I just think a CD or DVD should have been included. All of the classroom books used in the community college have CDs or DVDs in the back of the book so students expect it today. Summary: Manual for Photoshop Elements $ It was brand new and undamaged. Exactly what I expected. Summary: |
