Summary: Excellent Book
I highly recomend this book. I think it best serves those who already know the syntax of PHP, but it is a excellent book. I recomend either "Learning PHP" (The O'Reilly book) or "PHP for the World Wide Web : Visual QuickStart Guide" for a beginner. Both of these books will help you learn the syntax and concepts of PHP, but then it is best to move on to a book that gives practical examples, and this book excells at giving practical examples.
Summary: A good book for getting started with php and databases.
By reading just the first 4 chapters I was able to create my own webpages using php and the mySQL database to store tables of data. It has some good example programs that you can follow.
Summary: Sitepoint PHP and MySQL
Sitepoint (both the books and the website) is an excellent resource for quick learning of the latest and greatest in web development technologies, and this book proves it. Very clearly written and easy reading; a practical, hands-on tutorial. Provides everything necessary to develop and serve up a top-notch website backed by a powerful database.

Summary: PHP 5 Ready?
I have been reading alot of books on PHP 5's new object features. I picked up this book hoping it would meet somewhere between "Object-Oriented PHP" by Peter Lavin and "PHP Objects, Patterns, and Practices". The next day I ended up giving the book to my co-worker. I started reading it on the train and was completely disappointed! The entire object oriented chapter is written for PHP 4 besides one blurb that mentions refrences won't be needed in PHP 5. This book is in serious need of a new edition!

If you are beginning PHP programming this book is just one of the hundreds of books that cover the same common issues. If you are looking for the latest PHP has to offer, this isn't your book.
Summary: Good, but not a great resource for php5
I recently bought both volumes and am currently reading them. They both provide very good examples in an easy to read and understand format. I am a little disappointed in the coverage of php5, however. The cover proudly displays a "PHP 5 Ready" label, but it seems like this constitutes just a couple paragraphs added here and there to the old version. Also there is much talk about MySQL, but again it's not version 5.

Overall it is a very good resource aimed at the beginning or next level programmer, but probably best to wait for the next addition truly devoted to php5. In the meantime I would recommend "PHP and MySQL Web Development" by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson.

I would also recommend checking out Harry Fuecks' (the author of this book) articles on sitepoint.com. Very good.
Summary: Great book - great job
There were so many details in this book that I attempted to find on-line, but had no luck. This book is worth ten times its price. Great job! Thanks.

Summary: Accurate and easy to understand, but ineffective
I almost gave it two stars, but that wouldn't quite be fair. The book is written in a comfortable, informal tone and is easy to understand. It is well edited. The trouble is that it, like many programming books, doesn't TEACH YOU THE LANGUAGE. To use metaphor, it teaches you how to say, "Where's the bathroom" in PHP, but not what "Where's," "the" and "bathroom" mean and how to use them in other sentences. It uses the tools of PHP to make a jig for you to perform one very specific task, but it doesn't give you the tools.

Put directly, this book gives you complete code for a specific task and then loosely explains what the code does IN THAT CONTEXT. I want a book that teaches me the specifics of the function and syntax of various commands, allows me to use them to solve problems on my own, and THEN talks about broader programming techniques.
Summary: Good Beginning Book
I'm about half way through this and have browsed the remaining half already. This book is a good beginning book for PHP and MySQL. They cover the basics quickly, yet effectively. The numerous examples give you the opportunity to apply the knowledge and practice writing code.

For those who have complained... you can download the code from the Wrox website. However, I have found that typing in the expamples helps me to digest and remeber the lessons. I even went so far and creating new files every time rather than just modifying.

I too had typos with the code... However, they have thus far, always been on my end. The code in the book hasn't seemed flawed yet - although a few times I was convinced it was, only to finally see the missing quote mark or semicolon in MY code.

I do wish that they would have gone into a bit more description about the details of conecting from PHP to MySQL, although I can do it, I don't entirely understand some of the code.

With this book you learn good, practial information about how to use PHP in conjunction with MySQL - The Apche piece is really only relevent for getting you PHP going. They cover what the book claims.
Summary: Wrox (your f***ed if your) Beginning PHP5, Apache, and MySql Web Development (with this book)
This book right from the very beginning contradticts itself, it is full of different code for different things and typos.
I created several pages just as they said in the book and all worked, but had nasty looking error codes all over them.

If you are a beginner, which with a title like this books i presume so, don't even think about getting this. Its difficult to follow at the best of times.
However all the code does work, just not well.

Summary: educational AND entertaining
This book is not meant to be a profound cache of code-snippets. Indeed there are some coding errors. I freely admit that I learned raw html "OJT" years ago, with little reason or time to learn anything more involved that wasn't required of me. I was a designer, typesetter and layout hanger, not a programmer. I have no experience in C or in Java. Call me a programmer groupie, I have dozens of family, friends and acquaintances who program miracles daily in all different alleys while I play a "very aesthetic game of tiddleywinks". When I began getting clients who wanted websites that DID things instead of just glorified yellow-page ads, this "turkey" asked all of the "eagles" which way to turn -- they looked at what I needed and what paths that might lead to, and they all said PHP. I started playing around with canned PHP webapps about two years ago, and I quickly picked up how to install mods and then modify those same mods no sweat, but even with a few different sorts of PHP/MySQL in 24 hours, one week, etc. books -- I never really understood the WHY's and HOW's of the GUTS of those webapps [framework, huh?!], let alone how to create even the simplest of freestanding flat calls, all of which have recently begun to make my life SO much easier. I quickly learned that those 24 hours/one week/etc. style books are ALMOST STRICTLY made for folks with C and Java experience even though the books desperately claim otherwise. Why did I choose this book? Because a few friends of mine who have been working with PHP since near the beginning told me that this was one of the few version'd books that always has a worthwhile amount to offer both beginners and seasoned pro's, as well as everyone in between. I actually started reading this one cover to cover, and was not the slightest bit disappointed in my investment. Let me clarify -- I actually COULD read this one cover to cover without wondering what magical decoder ring I was missing. Instead of a code snippet "Instant PHP" book, I finally wound up with one that I can look at the examples in the book, and without even trying the examples verbatim, write my own similar but original code for what *I* want to accomplish. I don't know Jane Adams, I am not her banker, and I don't know what I would do with her recipe database so 6 page long examples of how to code any of that to be used verbatim in 24 hours are of little value to me. Yes, the book jumps around -- there's a heck of a lot to cover here! 1000+ pages might seem rather hefty, but it has been a godsend for me. Take the reviews however you will; I found it extremely educational AND entertaining, and having seen dog-earred copies in the offices of some of said "eagles" -- I am fairly certain there is some great stuff in here for PHP pro's too. If you really feel the need, give it a few minutes at your local bookshop -- then come back to Amazon for the killer discount. You won't be disappointed!
Summary: Worth Reading
As the other reviewers have stated, there are quite a few code errors. However, I was impressed by the content. The dialog within the book is comprehensive as well as enjoyable. This is not a dry manual. It does jump around, but with so much covered, there's no correct navigational path to develop each topic in succession. I found it great to read the book, but create my own code based on examples found in the book. (Copying the code line by line didn't help me. However, copying the general information contained really expanded my knowledge.) This is a book for beginner and intermediate programmers interested in PHP.
Summary: A third of the way through and thoroughly dissatisfied
This book has some good introduction to PHP and MySQL, but the examples are abhorrent, with some having obviously flawed conditional logic. If you get this you will be spending most of your time debugging the inherently flawed code. This is a real headache especially if it's your first time doing things like self-submitting forms. What's even worse is that the examples are barely elucidated and there is nothing on how to correctly setup example-specific MySQL tables, columns etc. Basically you are left to copying the examples and hoping to learn something whilst debugging because there is little or no info provided on the dynamics of the code.

Summary: Is XML as useful as claimed?
This book is helpful and easy to understand and follow, however, the more I read about XML the less useful it seems to be. If I knew then what I know now I probably wouldn't bother learning about XML because I work with web design and nothing else. I am familiar with PHP and MYSQL so I can't really find a purpose for XML at this time. The book is great but the technology is not as useful as I thought it would be.

I may change my mind in the future but for now XML is on the back burner and PHP/MYSQL is my current focus.

My point in this review is to let others know that if you already know PHP and MYSQL and only work on the web then you may find learning XML redundant or maybe even useless. I'm sure it would look great on a resume though.
Summary: Ok but not great
This is my revised and rewritten review of this book.

The first review dated Feb 19 was just two stars, titled `Disjointed and Superficial', and read...

I bought Myer's book to help me move from XHTML to XML and to handle data with PHP which does not fit well in a relational database / SQL. I am not interested in writing a CMS, and therefore tried to skim or skip those parts. Unfortunately, some key points are buried in the CMS discussion. Subjects (ie: Namespace) seem to be mentioned or touched on in several places without doing a thorough job at any one point or multiple points. The subjects which are discussed, are not discussed in depth. And why is Ralph Waldo Emmerson given ink on page 59, and then included in the index??? I found myself working a little too hard to just get the important points.

I know Myer tried very hard to write a good book, and it is not a 'really bad' book. On a positive note: The editing error rate seems to be low as compared to a lot of first edition, first printing computer books. There is some good material in it, but this book does not work well for me. I have at least temporarily given up on this book a little short of the half way point. Since finding a really good XML book seems harder than it should be, I may come back to this one, and if so, I'll update this opinion.

Warning: [3 opinions given here appear to be by paid reviewers. ie: 9/14/05, 10/7/05, and 11/8/05. I now suspect some of the others are personal friends of the author. Hint: Check out the person writing the review before actually reading it. Look for how many opinions he/she writes and how many stars. I distrust all high opinions in the first few months of publication, all high opinions by people who have only written a couple of opinions, and all high opinions from people who only write high opinions. Bottom Line: Distrust all high opinions except those from people who have established some evidence of independence by posting negative as well as positive opinions about other books. Thanks for the lack of honesty Tommy &/or Sitepoint &/or big A. I would have given 3 stars if there were not so many false ones posted here. (my opinion, 2 cma).]

Now, having finished Myer's book (except for most of the CMS stuff), I have changed it to 3 stars and concluded ....

There are about an equal number of pros and cons. It is somewhat light and easy to read, and the editing error rate is good. It is kind of a quick survey of subjects which Myer thinks are important. I did like chapters 7 & 9 (Manipulating XML with PHP, & XML and Web Services).

On the con side: The Appendix listing of PHP functions / methods is not complete and no examples are given. Where he discusses ways to extract XML from a database, two different sources (tables) are used, so the results are not comparable. I wish he had spent more ink on handling XML with PHP and less on client side technologies which are not well supported yet. I found the example listings a little short and lacking some additional code which would have helped follow what was supposed to happen. More output/results listings would also have helped.

The book is not particularly complete, and could not be used as a reference, but it may be ok (not great) as an overview or introduction. A better intro book may be `Beginning XML, 3rd Edition' by David Hunter etc., although that is a much bigger book.

Lastly, do not trust any high star rating review unless the source has proven his/her impartiality by posting positive as well as not so positive reviews of other books. Too many opinions of this book do not pass that simple test. The basic problem is determining who to believe and which postings to suspect are covertly trying to sell books because they have a vested interest or undisclosed motive.
Summary: Don't let the PHP in the title fool you.
This is a book about XML, all the power and flexability that the language gives you. It just happends to use PHP for the database access. Which means that no matter what language you use, this is a must have reference guide.

Thomas Myer has managed to put into writing one of the very best XML primers out there. It starts so gently, dealing with the familiar (HTML), and steps you through some basic examples. By the end of chapter 2 you are doing transforms. Before you close out Chapter 6 you will have worked with XPath Queries. These are no small concepts, but I never felt overwhelmed or lost. Mainly due to the precise and comprehensive writing, but the familiar examples (for web developers they are very familiar) helped keep me on some familiar ground.

If you are using XML over the web (in any language), I urge you to pick this one up. It wil be time very well spent.

Summary: Interesting points of view but....
Although errors can seem obvious in some situations, some are not so obvious when the prose describe what is desired, but the code samples provided do not fit the bill. Expect to spend some time determining if the code actually does what is described. Download the code samples from the Wrox site and try it for yourself first (start with ch15 for a good example of ample carelessness). Inconsistent conventions used throughout the book (naming private members of a class for example) also make it more challenging to follow the code samples. There is also a large portion of the book dedicated to non-php-specific Coding House approaches to business. Although several sections provide decent and accurate coverage, the book fails to provide a flow to the next section in most cases. While reading, it is apparent when you have switched to a new author (since they do not follow the best practices presented earlier in the narrative). If a proper review for errors and some rewriting to tie the sections together were performed, this book could improve, however, I cannot recommend it as is. If you are not bothered when you skim the table of contents and spot page numbers (chapter 25) being misnumbered, then perhaps the various other errors throughout the book can be overlooked. I would accept such errors in an online book under review - not from an established publishing house.
Summary: Buyer Beware
I like the topics covered in this book. However, there are a number of grammatical errors throughout and the codes in the book are full of errors. If you're up for the challenge of surfing the books forum page at [...] to find code fixes, then this book is for you. But, if your not the adventurous type and like codes to work out of the box then this book isn't for you.
Summary: Missing information / Many examples don't work
This is obviously a book written by a collective of PHP4 programmers who have taken code that they've written and are familiar with (and which is sometimes outdated), and attempted to put a Object Oriented face on it in order to make a little money from this book.

Notice that if you're looking for a comprehensive PHP5 book, this is not it. The authors don't even mention the new MySQLi extension for PHP5 nor the SQLite database. It's obvious they come from and are still in the pre-PHP5 world. They also are slanted towards Smarty page templates and using Postgres for their examples. They give only a passing mention (one page, three sentences) to MySQL.

If you do buy this book, be prepared to go to www.wrox.com and the forums to find corrections to the code examples made by readers. Be prepared to re-write many of their examples.

All in all, this might be a generally useful book, but be advised that the grammatical errors, code mistakes, and parochial attitudes don't make it the best.

Summary: Look for another book!
The numerous grammar and coding errors in this book make it one to completely avoid if you are new to PHP programming. Fortunately, I was familiar enough with PHP to catch most of the coding errors.

The thing that probably bothered me the most was the fact that many of the explanations of the code given in the book refer to code that isn't even printed in the book! The explanations seemed to refer to a previous revision, rather than the code in the final printed version. Whoever was the project manager and/or proofreader of this book should be shamed and then fired.
Summary: PHP5 a really really good review
When I first thought of the idea of reading a book that I would be able to choose I knew I wanted to learn something useful. I have wanted to get at least one language under my belt by the time I am 16. There are many languages out there such as Perl, PHP, Cold Fusion, ASP, Python, C++, C, and of course Assembly. Now I do not think anyone could learn Assembly right off the bat without learning easier languages first. I have a great interest in dynamic web sites and servers. Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, and free time of course are a prefect match! I have always had to learn everything I know about computers from researching by myself, whether it is Google or in this case a book.
PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) is a language that revolves around web sites. With PHP developers are able to create a more dynamic web site then they normally would with regular HTML. An example would be a simple site with a user / login option / feature. What PHP does is although developers to code a script to handle such an option / feature.
This book does a very theroe job of explaining the whole processor and background of PHP. It starts out explaining the apache side of things, showing how to set up a server on both platforms. Next it explains the syntax of PHP and has many examples. Then throughout the book it explains some functions and how they can be used. I epically liked the chapter on Dir / File manipulation. After it explains functions and examples it shows you how to use MySQL along with PHP. With is a must if you are going to be learning PHP. Also I like that it cover image manipulation.

This is what I created using the knowledge I gained from this book. It is a site where users may create an account and then upload certain types of media (images, audio, and video). And has a nice GUI where they can manage it from.
Summary: Pretty useful book!!
I got a lot out of this title. Having known almost nothing about PHP to begin with, I am now able to do some pretty neat stuff...

Thanks..
