Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: wonderful book I used this book to homeschool my 13 year old daughter, who went on to obtain a 750 on the SAT II Biology. I also taught a class to homeschoolers using THE WAY LIFE WORKS (much cheaper) as the main text, but using many of the CD-ROM activites from ESSENTIAL BIOLOGY as class material. I especially liked the MendAliens for genetics problems! There are many useful activites, quizzes, and chapter tests, wonderful graphics. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand "essential" biology. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Enjoyable Read I read this book over a weekend, and found it thoroughly enjoyable. The author does have a distinctive style, chatty with a tendency to go off on tangents. Not to everyones taste but I liked it. Some reviewers have noted that the science could be more rigorous. That is what pubmed is for, this is pop-science, written by a journalist, and one is of the better offerings within the genre. Summary: Undesirable It's the polar opposite of good writing. It's so familiar, so conversational, so unturgid, and so padded with fluffy stuff it's unreadable. Even worse than I figured it would be. Oh, well, now i know after wondering all these years. Summary: Pollan Stands Us On Our Heads... ...and points out that a lot in life is a matter of perspective. Immediately the reader can identify with the author, whose somewhat flowery prose stills sounds a lot like how we would write about something that we knew a LOT about. Obviously this is a man who enjoys his chosen careers of botanist and writer. Above all Pollan brings the reader into his atmosphere, and is able to educate without any of the normal side-effects of education--boredom, effort, no beer money. His descriptions of plant and bee sex are entertaining, to put it mildly. I enjoyed it so much a was a hair's width from stealing it from my friend Alex in Boulder. But then I came here and ordered a copy along with "The Omnivore's Dilemma". Yes, it's that good. - Ivar Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: written with the heart of a teacher Though the two authors are consultants, they are foremost - teachers. What is useful, and kind to a degree, is they put an effort to explain the numbers as pragmatic as possible. That idea made this book very accessible. To the industrial engineers or those who are involved (and passionate) in operations or in understanding systems - next to the Industrial Engineering Handboook, this should be in our library. Summary: Exceptional enlightened and insightful! I found this book to be very insightful. It helps to explain many of my own observations in my factory. The authors did an excellent job of explaining the key concepts using only average use of mathematics and in simple layman's terms. The readers will only need basic mathematics/beginner calculus, and basic statistics. Reading it was like discovering new ideas to implement in the factory to quickly realize efficiencies and cost savings. It was one of the best books I have laid eyes on in a very long time. I highly recommend this book for every mfg and production engineers working in assembly or automation-driven factory. This book is not applicable to chemical processing, thus may not bring significant values to chemical or petroleum engineers. Summary: Excellent and valuable book This is the best course textbook I have had so far over about ten industrial engineering courses (and I have had some very good textbooks and courses). The book basically describes how to analyze and improve manufacturing operations through examining key areas that include: variability and its sources, push and pull systems, and supply chain management. The authors approach is to present ideas in a very clear and relevant way. What I particularly like is that they do a great job putting things into perspective in a style that is highly readable. While there is some math involved if one wants to delve into the details that are in side notes, a basic understanding of calculus is more than sufficient. The authors are clearly very bright and, more importantly, are able to communicate very effectively and with a sense of humor. This book can definitely be read on a stand-alone basis outside of a school environment. Many of the central ideas are very valuable. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Gardening info by Committee Gardening info by Committee: "Contributions from 100 distinguished horticulturists", yet in many ways this reference amplification fits the classic definition of a horse show. Sometimes books spin their wheels attempting to be all things to all people and accomplish nothing within that venture. For a perspective on the true relevance of their boast; "15,000 entries" - consider this, - Reviews of Modern Roses XI : The World Encyclopedia of Roses- has more than 25,000 listings of roses alone. Plant science researchers; those involved with academic and industrial settings, horticultural nurseries, botanical gardens, and informed amateur enthusiasts may not enthusiastically embrace this book's lack of information. A multiplication of 15,000 incomplete entries does not a good reference make. Summary: ...worth the trouble I had A BEAUTIFUL and comprehensive book. Yes, difficult to identify unknowns using this reference but if you can at least get a common local name, those names are well indexed in back. I'm on my third copy of this weighty volume. My first copy did not include pages 777-792; in way of compensation, pages 769-776 appeared twice. My second copy had all its pages in proper order; a few of them, however, were printed out-of-register, i.e., illegible. My third copy looks good, worth the trouble of repeated deliveries and checking each page number. I found that I did NOT like being without it. Maybe over our next Wisconsin winter I'll have time to check it for spelling and punctuation errors. Summary: Beautiful Book This is a beautiful, coffee-table worthy book. The information is detailed and thorough. However, I am just starting the landscaping process, and was hoping for a book that I could study to decide WHAT I want to plant; possibly a book divided into categories. This book is organized entirely alphabetically. With this book, you must already know the plant and can then get any information about it you want. It will be useful once my landscaping is finished. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great Book This is a great book filled with pictures and very informative information for Square Foot Gardening. I highly recommend it to anyone who is considering Square Foot Gardening, you will not be disappointed. Summary: All New Square Foot Garedning I loved the original Square Foot Gardening book and it helped me to garden in a region of poor soil. The new version is awesome. It is easier to read and makes gardening even simpler than before. Summary: good info, too proud i appreciated the author's gardening experience and am looking forward to trying the method. however, it was tough to wade through his self congratulatory tone and repetitive self praise for developing the concept. i found the charts very useful for spacing and planting dates. his website is also full of testimonials without any balanced critique of his book and method. if you can stomach the arrogant tone of the book, there is some good garden wisdom to be gained.
