Summary: Dan Brown has a profound writer's imagination!
I have read The Da Vinci Code first but when I read the Angels and Demons, I have liked it more. There was never a chapter that bores you and just continues on and on for suspense.
Summary: Better then the Da Vinci Code
Angels and Demons was not what I expected it to be. The story was fast paced, there were many twists, and it was not as contriversial as the Da Vinci Code.

The story revolves around Harvard professor of symbology Robert Langton, recieves a fax in the middle of the night. This fax sends a shiver up Langston's spine for it shows the sign up the Illuminati, a secret society that is pro science and antireligious. This group is suspected of having close ties with the masons and once was lead by Galielo himself.

The marking is found on a dead member of the CERN (a scientific community in Switzerland). After Langston makes it to Switzerland he learns that this dead scientist is in charge of anti-matter and by killing this man Illuminati has obtained antimatter to blow up the Vatican! Langston must stop the anti-matter from blowing up the Catholic holy site.

The book has a ton of twists and quite a few humorous moments. I didn't find this book offensive at all. I would suggest this book to anyone interested in being entertained. This book does a great job with that.
Summary: Intriguing
This book is better than The Da Vinci Code. It also serves as a fascinating and unconventional guide to the city of Rome. I recommend this for anyone who likes mystery and Italy. The Cyclops Hammer is another book chockfull of mystery that takes place in Italy, plus it focuses on the terrorist Red Brigades, and I highly recommend it as well.

Summary: No Secret: It's a load of crap!
What a piece of propagandistic garbage! If an author is going to use
his liberal pipedreams as the basis of novel, at least he could do is
make it much more plausible and entertaining than this.

Although I'm not Catholic and have fundamental and profound theological
disagreements with Catholic doctrine, it's laughable to assert that
the Third Secret that Berry finally reveals could cause such a negative impact
as he imagines. True, the Catholic faith has a problem because it places
Church Tradition and the papacy on the same authoritative level as the
Bible, but it wouldn't take five minutes for a competent Biblical scholar
to disprove much less neutralize Berry's "revelations."

Suppose Berry's plot actually happened. Suppose the messages in the
visions were actually given as Berry imagines. Only someone who has
no Biblical knowledge or skill at simple Biblical exegesis or, on the other
hand, someone who believes special revelation continues today like
charismatics claim, could swallow such balderdash and be deceived (though
I'm certain many would be). We find in the early pages of the Bible TWO standards
by which to determine if a "prophecy" is of genuine divine origin. ONE, it must come to pass if it is of a future fulfillment. If it does not, the person is a false prophet. TWO, and it is here Berry fails miserably, is that if the nature of the
message contradicts what is already written in Scripture, or would lead someone
to behave in a manner forbidden by God, the message, and the messenger, is false and is not to be obeyed.

Therefore, within Berry's own creation, there is this ridiculous internal inconsistency which makes nonsense of his entire premise.

Well worth avoiding the waste of time I unfortunately spent reading this tripe.
Summary: A Progressive Catholic's Fantasy
Taking his cue from Dan Brown, Steve Berry moves from the Russian themes of his first two novels to the intrigues of the Vatican for his third, The Third Secret. The influence of his expertise on Russia & Eastern Europe is still felt in his elucidation of the secrets of Fatima and scenes in Romania and Bosnia but this is a very different novel than he's written previously.

Like The Romanov Prophecy, this novel is set in an imaginary near future where Pope John Paul's successor is Clement XV, a progressive German pope who is looking to understand the third secret of Fatima. According to Berry's premise, the third secret supposedly revealed by John Paul is not, in fact, the message--or not the entire message--left by the Virgin. Clement is helped in this task by Msgr. Colin Michener, loyal but haunted by his past. Then, Michener's quest is hampered when Clement dies by his own hand and the ultra-conservative Alberto Cardinal Valendrea becomes pope.

Let me leave it there. It would be unfair to give away much more. Needless to say, what remains to unfold and be revealed is the ultimate dream of progressive Catholics everywhere. Pure fantasy? Certainly. Fun for a Catholic who dreams of a Church rocked to its foundations by a voice from heaven speaking directly to every problem the Church has? Absolutely.

Still, it is worth noting that, though Dan Brown may be the guiding force behind this novel, The Third Secret is nowhere near as controversial as The DaVinci Code; mainly, because Brown's novel speaks to the basic tenets of Catholicism while Berry's novel speaks to religious practice--controversial in its own way but less so. Berry also has eliminated from this novel some of the things that plagued his first two; in particular, the body count here is low and handled realistically.

Overall, it remains difficult to say whether or not this novel is fundamentally any better than his previous two novels. And yet, it seems more sound in many basic ways and less taxing on the suspension of disbelief once you accept the basic premise. To be honest, for a progressive Catholic reader, it's just more interesting and fun, a great read. A subjective analysis, to be sure, but an honest one.
Summary: Almost.........lost it in the end
Held my attention for an airplane ride (hence 2 stars), but I was sincerely disappointed for the last third. Kept reading because I didn't think any author would be that brazen. Trivializes current political / social / religous arguments to an insulting degree.

Summary: Great kids books on CD
My kids (4 and 6) love The Magic Treehouse books. These CDs were a treat so they could continue to "read" after the lights are out. The only drawback: my 4-year-old son gets so involved in the stories that he has had hard time falling asleep. I worried the kids wouldn't want to listen once they'd read the books one time -- not a concern ... we listen over and over and over.
Summary: My kids loved this
I bought this for my 7yr old twins. They can't read the books on their own just yet. However, with the CDs, they have "read" the first 4 books in a matter of days. They have even hooked a few of their friends on the Magic Treehouse books in the process.
Summary: Peaceful Car Trips and more.....
I have four children - ages 5, 3 1/2, and 19 months (twins); I bought these cd's for the main purpose of making car rides more enjoyable and they worked like a charm. My two older children are asking to listen to the stories rather than watch TV, which is such a blessing! They are even asking to listen to them when they go to bed.

The only downside is that some of the stories are split between 2 disks, which makes it difficult when they want to listen to a particular story at bedtime or if they want to listen to stories in different rooms.

Overall the set was well worth the money!

Summary: Great Books
I am 6 years old and I love these books. The characters are fun to read about.
Summary: Magic tree house
The whole Magic Tree House series is wonderful for ages 5-10.
Younger children love to listen to the adventures, while older readers will enjoy reading their "first" chapter books solo. What's nice about the series is they can follow Jack and Annie through awesome adventures all over the world, while getting brief social study facts at the same time. The series holds their interest in reading which is great in a media filled world. For little ones that enjoyed "Dragon Tales" or the "Magic School Bus" this is a great addition to their library.

Summary: Great Resource for Writers of Children's Books
This is well-organized and has all of the information one would need to access publishers. Agents and publicists, as well as writers, need to have this "encyclopedia" of resources. There is a wealth of information needed for sending book proposals and manuscripts. Just excellent!
Summary: The Most Important Tool for the Children's Book Genre
Professionals in the children's book genre have been relying on the yearly Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market for 18 years. This guide covers everything writers and/or illustrators would ever need to find a home for their work.

The 2006 edition contains more than 800 listings of opportunities. Book publishers, magazine opportunities, literary agents, contests and conferences are just a few of the numerous types of listings you get in 400+ pages.

Each listing is updated yearly to make sure the contact information, pay rates and specific publishing needs are accurate. Editors of the guide generally work all year long to ensure the listings are up-to-date.

What makes this guide even more valuable are the articles, interviews and also help for those just getting started in the business. The guide could simply be a compilation of listings and it would be a great investment but the fact that these other resources are added make it a powerful tool for any writer or illustrator's career.

If you're searching for markets on your own, you're wasting precious time. The 2006 Writer's & Illustrator's Market does the tedious work for you so you can simply choose an appropriate market and find a publishing outlet for your work.
Summary: If you want to write for kids
If you want to write for kids, there's two things you need to do (i.e., other than writing your book!): join SCWBI and get this book. The book is full of great advice and contacts. A must-have for all children's writers.

Summary: Thanks!!!
So Glad That steven reccommended this book, both here and his blog. These books by Zaleski are amazing. I Highly Reccommend them also.
Summary: Fundamental for Roman Catholics
Catechism of the Catholic Church is an official and authoritative text on Catholicism. This book explicates the doctrine and philosophy of the faith inculcated by Christ nearly two milenium ago which today is shared by over one billion Catholics.

The book is comprised of four main sections; The Profession of Faith, The Celebration of the Christian Mystery, Life in Christ, and Christian Prayer. The topics in each section contain very detailed explanations.

Catechism of the Catholic Church is an essential book on faith for Roman Catholics to read.
Summary: Learn Christianity the Way it was Always Taught (2000 Years Worth of Christianity).
Early Christians taught Christianity through the method of Catechetics, never by way of the Bible (which was not canonized until 397 AD at the Third Council of Carthage, authorized by Pope St. Siricius). The Bible was never to be used as a teaching tool alone, nor was it ever considered sufficient for such an endeavour. This is a major turning point for anyone who has read the Bible. Why doesn't the Bible talk about itself? Why doesn't it come with an instruction manual if God wanted us to learn Christianity by Bible alone and why doesn't Jesus say as much. Simply put, Jesus doesn't talk about a Bible being the only way to learn Christianity. Neither do any of the early church fathers in the New Testament or the early Christian historical record. No matter how many times you read the Bible this information is never there, but you do find that Jesus did set up a Church (please note Church singuar not Churches plural). Jesus calls it a Church. Going back into the Historical Record it is interesting to find out how Christians, including the early church fathers, all of them, learned Christianity. Christians have always used the method of Catechetics. All the early church fathers where water baptized, taught Catechism and confirmed. Why this way? The answer is that Jesus set it up that way. How? Jesus made a promise to the apostles that on the Day of Pentecost they would have all of the truth, not half of it, or a bit of it. Joh 16:13 "When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come." So on this day the Apostles received just that. They then went on to elect another Apostle in Act 1:26 "And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles." The Apostle's rebuked anyone who tried to teach Christianity without their permission. Act 15:24 "Since we have heard that some persons have gone out from us and troubled you with words, unsettling your minds, although we gave them no instructions," Act 15:25 "it has seemed good to us, having come to one accord, to choose men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul," Act 15:26 "men who have risked their lives for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ." The Biblical books First Timothy and Second Timothy are from the Apostle Paul instructing Bishop Timothy. We see the appointment of these Bishops to govern the Church. Apollos had received instructions. Act 18:24 "Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures." Act 18:25 "He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John." 2Th 3:6 "Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us." These are traditions taught to Christians by Bishops appointed by the Apostles as Church leaders, or teachings of the Apostles themselves. They are over us in the Lord. 1Th 5:12 "We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you," The structure of the Church has the Apostles in its foundation Eph 2:19 "So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God," Eph 2:20 "built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone," The "Word of God" is used every time in the Bible to speak of an oral communication or Jesus in the flesh, never does it mean the Bible or a text. So if we are to be taught Christianity we should seek out the traditional method that Christians where taught Christianity. That tradition is the Catechism, not reading the Bible (we can read the Bible, but that is not how we are supposed to learn how to be Christians), something that many of the early church fathers devoted their time too, and which is still taught today. The Catechism is very different to the `Shorter Catechism' taught to catechumens, as it runs over 850 pages with 2865 entries. What makes this longer Catechism so good is that you can now go back and relearn an advanced form of the Catechism by reading this. Remember though that this is not how to receive Catechism for Confirmation. You are supposed to get an oral teaching of it. Contact you local Roman Catholic Church for that. The body of text itself is a top theology, a combination of hundreds of thousands of theologians over nearly 2000 years, makes it an absolutely vital work that teaches us more things about Christianity than the Bible can. Hundreds of thousands of theologians with the Holy Spirit where unified in its development. The Holy Spirit didn't disappear or wander away. It is obvious that it has been developed with love, by those who treasured the scriptures and the traditions of the Church that Jesus started. The Catechism is something to read slowly over a long period of time, helping to stir the Holy Spirit within us and learning more about the faith day by day. The other amazing thing about the Catechism is that it is used by the Magisterium of the RCC to unify every Catholic. Catholics are all unified with these teachings. If something contradicts the Catechism then chances are that there is something wrong with whatever is contradicting it. The Catechism must not be perceived as Dogma however, but it does quote Dogma and has a huge index of references including a massive amount of footnotes most of which reference Vatican II documents, but also many more. The other great thing is that it can be used to prevent baring false witness against the RCC. For example if someone was to claim that Catholics worship Mary like she is God, then they would have to support it with reference to RCC teaching found in some Catechism verse that teaches a Catholic to Worship Mary like she is God. Since it doesn't then the person would be mistaken and can be corrected so that they do not bare false witness again. It is a great work for researching and citing also, such a miraculous achievement. The Catechism is how we learn about the mind of God as it was setup to be taught by Jesus Christ who selected the Apostles as the foundation of his Church. Apostolic Succession means knowing that our Bishop was appointed by another Bishop who is in full communion with the Church. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is part of that fullness of truth. This is the way Jesus set it up. You could try to prove it was another way, with Bible-alone remember, and you can't. Bible-alone simply isn't in the Bible. The tradition of Catechism is 2Th 3:6 "Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us." When 2TH was written there was no such thing as the New Testament.
