Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The Best! This is a gorgeous book w/ tons of great ideas. You can spend hours upon hours enjoying this one - sure to be a classic! Summary: A complete duplication I was very excited to receive this book in the mail, as I am a huge Pottery Barn fan. I have all of the other books in the series as well as a lot of their furniture & accessories in my own home. I was really disappointed to see that this book is merely a compilation of the other books in their library series. If you are looking for something new, this isn't it, but if you don't have the others, it's a wonderful reference with lovely pictures. Summary: A treat for interior addicts I live in Norway, so we don't have any Pottery Barn stores here. Nevertheless I find their books very interesting and delightful- and similar furniture is to be found over here. I have purchased the Living Room book and Storage and Display before - liked them very much. I don't agree that the photos are similar - only a few and some photos are not used at all in the other books I have read. But I do agree that completely new pictures could have been used all over. No need to repeat. Full of good ideas an inspirations. This is a book I can linger over several evenings when the kids are tucked in. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Can you go wrong? This book is an excellent read. Not only is it informative, but it is also filled with the type of humor us "weekend warriors" love. As someone who's never laid tile before, I've found myself enlightened with new insight and knowlege in the trade after reading this terrific book. If you take the time to read it and not just glaze over it - especially the important parts - I don't see how you could go wrong with any tile project you choose to tackle! Summary: Excellent resource, great confidence builder This book is more than just a how-to book. Between this book and the author's web-site full of friendly people and helpful advice, the average DIYer will find the knowledge and confidence to tackle nearly any tile project. If funds aren't an issue or you are a book junkie like me, I'd recommend you own this book and "Setting Tile" by Michael Byrne as both books cover different subjects to different depths, but if you only buy one book, "Tile Your World" by John Bridge is the one to own. Summary: Wonderful resource that keeps on giving As a dedicated DIYer with no tiling experience, I needed a book that would provide a good overview as well as the details to actually get the job done. This book presents the necessary information in a manner that benefits novices and pros alike. I was able to read the book cover to cover without losing interest. I then dug back into the book to re-read material to gain a more thorough understanding. When I've not been able to figure something out, I've posted questions directly to an active web-based forum hosted by the author (great resource and the book makes a pointer to it--that's the "keeps on giving" reference in the review title and it was worth the price of the book alone!). The only ding I'd give the book is that a good portion of the images are printed too small. As a newbie, I'd appreciated larger images throughout and would have been glad to pay a little more for it. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: 500 Cups Basically this book is strait up hardcore pottery porn. If you like beautifully lit photographs of pretty pottery then this book is for you. There is very little discussion of technique, functionality, or expressive intent. Just lots and lots of pictures. However, the format of all cups in this book does help show up the range of possibilites within the context of a paticular form. Overall this book has been very helpful to me for teaching ceramics, despite the limitations of technical information. Summary: Dissapointment Since I was very found from the book 500 bowls .I ordered 500 cups and I was very anxious to receive it ) and unfourtantly the book was a dissapointment because it had more of the same in most of the pages. Most of the book (more than half of the book) is about different examples of some type of reduction and most ceramics have only an electric klin. On the other hand there are 500 hundred pictures so you can find a few inspartaional pages. Hope my reveiw was helpful. Summary: inspirational This book is as fantastic as 500 teapots! It is full of inspiration! I love it and highly recommend it, buy it now, don't wait another second! Summary: |

Organized in a logical way, the book offers a wonderful review of the stoneware tradition still alive in North Carolina. The book connects the North Carolina tradition of pottery making with traditions in Europe, Asia, and other states in the U. S. Lavishly photographed with rich details, The Potter's Eye is sure to impress. Perhaps the best part of the book are the interviews included with modern potters: Kim Ellington, Mark Hewitt, Ben Owen III, Pam Owens, Vernon Owens, and David Stuempfle. Legends in their own time. The Potter's Eye is not a coffee table book. It will become an integral part of your library as soon as you receive it. Peace Summary: |
| Making Marks: Discovering the Ceramic Surface
Publisher: kp books |

| ISBN: 0873495047 List Price: $44.99 Amazon Price: $29.69 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Books like this one - a definite necessity ! This is an exciting book, it is not just about painting marks on surfaces. The list of options is quite comprehensive from liquid slips, clay colour modifications, carving, underglazes, slip-trailing, lustre-ware and of course impressions and incisions made by tools. Robin Hopper is a master of clay due to the years he has be absorbed by it. He has used good quality work by various potters to display the different forms of decoration. Surface decoration is always something you need to think in advance about before making the piece. You need to be clear what you want to see in the end, these choices will affect how smooth you want the surface to be and of course the decoration needs to be a custom-fit aesthetically for each piece. Discourse about these matters is found throughout the book. Glaze technology is discussed in this book, though not to the depth a total beginner would like - total knowledge could be gained in a technical course. This is one of those books that you can keep using as your understanding grows depending on where you are. Always interesting and inspiring to read about other surace decoration forms gaining knowledge all the way. This book would also be good as a guide in a set course, chapter by chapter you could do projects eg Chapt 1: Drawing, Chapt 2: Sign & Symbol, Chapt 3: Pattern & Space, Chapt 6: Marks of Slash, Scratch, Carve & Cut etc. All in all, a wonderful storehouse of so many ideas to have at hand ! Summary: For the dabbler or those needing inspiration to try something new While I'm relatively new to the art and craft of pottery, I beginning to find my own voice in my work. This book is helping me to think about differnet ways to express myself in my work. While I will probably never go out and buy a sand blaster or work with lusters, I know I have the inital reference source I need should I decide to go that way. Possibly one of the most valuable (but not necessarily exciting sections) is his intial discussion of drawing and line. I come from a background of hard science (chemistry) and know little of formal art or the principles of "line." He explains why this is important and how to start thinking about it. Finally, the book is a visual orgy. My husband (non potter) and I frequently sit and flip through the book to look at the examples of the various works. It becomes intoxicating. We can sit and discuss what makes one peice have that "come hither" look while another, while technically excellent, has little or no appeal to us. It has become a spring board for me in terms of astectics. While this book will not teach you how to sand blast or give you important clues about the proper layering of airbrushed glazes, it will help you think about all of the different types of marks you can make on clay and choose the ones that call to you. Summary: Compendium of Surface Decoration Techniques This book is an exhaustive compendium of all different surface decoration techniques. The second paragraph of the "Book Description" in the "Editorial Reviews" for this book gives you a good idea of the range of topics in the many chapters. Each one of these topics is treated comprehensively, and also includes many color photo examples. It is a very thorough and well-done book. Summary: |

| Alternative Kilns & Firing Techniques : Raku * Saggar * Pit * Barrel (A Lark Ceramics Book)
Publisher: Lark Books |
|
| ISBN: 1579904556 List Price: $29.95 Amazon Price: $29.95 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Alternative Firing Techniques What a wonderful book. As a ceramic sculptor, I appreciate the Raku, Pit, Barrel and Saggar firing methods. It gives one enough of the technical details of the how-to's of each of the firing methods (and how to build a raku kiln, and barrel and pit kilns) to get one started. It also "fires" up one's imagination to expand the contents of the book and to push your work to another level. This book presents beautiful examples of what "Alternative Firing Techniques" can produce. Summary: emphasis on firing techniques, not kilns This is a very worthwhile and contentful book, just not what it seemed from the brief desciption. Hopefully this clarification is helpful to others: This book's editorial description, along with the title, seem to suggest that its focus is in how to create various homemade ad hoc kilns (for those that don't have ready access to a kiln already). It talks about kiln building, and never uses the word raku. Basically, however, this is a raku book, with lots of interesting variations. "Barrel" and "pit" kilns (mentioned in the subtitle) turn out to be just more forms of raku, rather than new kinds of homemade kilns. It contains many creative firing ideas with wonderful results, generously shared by a number of contributors. Along the way, of course, they do tell you how to put together firing chambers for these firing techniques. So it does provide some alternative kiln construction guidance with variations, but not the quantity I was expecting. And the firing techniques were an unexpected bonus. In style, this is a thin "coffee-table book" - lots of great photos, widely set lines of type, artistic white space. But the content is fascinating and invaluable to anyone who wants to do firings that are more interesting than simply closing the door and turning on the heat. Initially, I was disappointed when I saw how the content of the book was padded out with white space, but after I started reading I realized how much great information was in it. I would like to see much more expanded content (not counting the gallery & appendices, it is 89 pages). However, this does provide plenty of ideas to try for quite some while. I just need to find a different alternnative kiln book for when I'm not doing raku style firings. (The publisher could really help out here, by giving the table of contents, which really does give an accurate idea of the book content). Summary: Awesome! I just received this book and it is absolutely one of the best Raku books going! It is well laid out with many high quality pictures showing the technique or concept being presented. Covers much more than raku with many other firing techniques. Has a fantastic picture gallery with fine examples of pieces created with the techniques in the book and a glaze recipe section with references back to the pieces the recipes were used on. A must have for anyone interested in raku or any of the related firing techniques! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Bowl (n) 1. A hemispherical vessel... I have a hunger for bowls. Objects that can hold other objects, particularly food, fascinate me. This book feeds my hunger with beautiful color photos of more bowls than my brain can hold in one sitting. Bowls that make me laugh, purr, gasp with amazement, and covet. Oh how I covet. Bowls that hold other bowls that hold other bowls... And for the frustrated potter in me, the information on glazes and firing deepens my appreciation of each and every hemispherical vessel. I'll have this one, and that one, and the little one over there... Summary: Disappointing, but here's another recommendation This book follows the current trend in ceramics which says if it isn't "far out " , misshapen, weird, and/or ugly it isn't "in". A lot of these pieces are not even recognizable as bowls. If you want a really great book of bowls that look like bowls and yet are not ordiinary, get 500 Wooden Bowls. Many of the designs will translate very well to clay Summary: 500 ideas 500 BOWLS & its companion 500 TEAPOTS is a source of inspiration for any potter. I hope the keep publishing these books.
