Summary: Imperfect writing style, but an interesting retelling with empowering ideas. Mildly recommended.
The King Must Die is a retelling of the Greek myth of Theseus, following the hero from the contested fatherhood of his early childhood, through his Kingship at Eleusis, to his time at Crete as living as a bull-dancer, ending with the successful journey through the labyrinth and the slaying of the Minotaur. The text humanizes the mythic figure of Theseus, giving him mortal weaknesses and human wants, while at the same time preserving a sense of power and destiny through moira the scope, possibility, responsibility, and end of every man's life. The end result is a realistic yet still heroic tale, fairly easy to read, with an interesting and motivating concept of fate. I would recommend it to those who like myths, specifically Greek myths; it's not a world-changing book but it is a fairly enjoyable read.

I'm not entirely sure I have much more to say about this text. It is what I've already described it as: a humanized retelling of a classic myth with an emphasis on the idea of fate. The idea of fate that the book considers and revolves around is quite interesting. Unlike some Calvinistic concept, fate, or moira, in The King Must Die focuses on ability and life just as much as it does death. Fate is not only how a man will end up, but also what a man can and must do. The concept is empowering and even comforting to both Theseus and the reader because it provides divine support to even the greatest ambition.

For all of that, there is something a bit clunky, a bit heavy-handed about the text. Books written to affect a certain style or national sense often feel that way to me. Here, Renault appears to be imitating whatever she thinks Greek thoughts or writing to be like. I can only assume that's what she's doing--otherwise, her writing style itself is choppy, using over-definite sentences, hard end-stops, and cut and dry physical descriptions. The effect, while readable, taints the human aspects that she has worked so hard to give to the text. While gritty detail and lust may be human, robotic sentence structure is not. In the end this may be a quibbling fault, but it distracted me throughout the book.

I was impressed by idea more than execution in this book, but I'm ok with that. It's an imperfect text, but the realistic, pre-myth version of the Theseus story is an interesting read and the concept of moira is thought-inspiring. I recommend the book only tentatively, and would rather readers check out some really great literature instead, but I would still recommend it. It's a pretty good, interesting text.
Summary: How legends begin and more
I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I started reading this book. I was familiar with the legend of Theseus and the Minotaur. This, I figured, would go into greater depth. But what Renault does here was not expected. She takes the legend of Theseus and makes it real. If you have ever wondered how all those Greek myths and legends came to be, read this book. It makes perfect sense that stories of real and extraordinary people would, over time, condense and exaggerate into something fantastic.

This book is, in the end, all about Theseus. His voice comes through strong and shining and we immediately immerse in his adventure. Interestingly enough, he remains a teenager throughout the story. It is often touching how much growing up he has to do at such an early age.

My only wish after finishing this book was that Miss Renault had continued to the end of Theseus's life and not stopped halfway through. However, it seems she does continue with "The Bull from the Sea."

I was shocked to learn that kids in grade 9 and 10 are required to read this for English class. This is higher level reading requiring maturity. When I was that age I could never get through the "boring" books that I now hold in esteem. And there is a certain amount of sexuality and homosexuality involved that might offend.

Summary: Fact from Fiction
Although Mary Renault was writing in the 1950's in The King Must Die (KMD) she manages to delve into the cultures and lanauges of ancient Greece in such a way that her novel about the life, trials and triumphs of King Theseus of Athens is as timeless as the myths about him.

Instead of creating a personal account of the myths of Greece, Renault took on the etiological aspects of the stories about Theseus and explains them in a way that the modern, analytical mind can be comfortable with.

Yes, the religious elements and influence (of the sea god, Poseidon, and the Earth goddess, Dia) are still profound, but we see real-life explanations that could very well have been the source of the myth.

The minotaur of Crete becomes an illegitimate son of the too-proud Queen, the Labryinth is a maze-like palace meant to keep royal blood from being mixed with 'outsiders' and, throughout it all, the essence of every person's moira (destiny) is related to the rituals that mean 'the king must die.'

Every aspect of the book leads into a sense of give and take, life and death, sink or float. The kings give their lives for their people the same way the Earth Mother's harvest feeds the people (with the kings' blood being the 'seed' that causes her to flower).

The most appealing aspect of this book is that the myths of ancient Greece and the long-gone gods are reanimated so that we are able to see the true religion of the era. Libations, questions and sacrifice mean the gods' favor and "play-acting" at the reverance inevitably means death.

Renault should be commended for an interesting, thought-provoking novel that had me dreaming of gods, kings, queens, and "wine-dark" seas for days on end.

Summary: Most Appropriate for Basel II
If you are Banker/Banking Consultant then this book is the closest you will get to understanding Credit Risk from a Basel II perspective. Its clear & lucid style helped me understand the gamut of techniques used in Credit Risk Measurement. Unfortunately the Book does not get into the details of bulinding models so if your looking for a model building cookbook, look elsewhere.
Summary: a complete, robust and comprehensive valuable resource!
In Measuring and Managing Credit Risk, the authors provided a robust, complete and comprehensive treatment of several aspects of modern credit risk measurement and management. Written by two high talented practitioners, this book will become certainly a reference both for academics and practitioners thanks to its careful treatment of several not so known empirical issues which practitioners have to face everyday. At the same time, do not consider the book as a new recipes book for managing credit risk. Both authors already proved their deep knowledges of financial theory and establish once again, through this book, how advanced knowledges of theory combined with significant practical experience make leading researches. As a PhD candidate in Finance, actually writing on credit risk, I definitively adopted this book and higly recommend it for anyone dealing with credit risk issues either through a practical experience or through a theoritical work.

Summary: The Real Alexander
Hollywood is probably the first one to introduce Alexander the Great into the public consciousness. Unfortunately, they are NEVER good at maintaining historical accuracy. This book respects the integrity of the man behind the legend. At the same time, it succeeds in telling an entertaining story.
Summary: Book review
This book is very good. It is historical accurate about the fall of the Persian Empire. At the beginning of the book, it is very long but detail of the main character and his past life. It has a great detail of his new life and how he must live. You can really relate to the character because he has an array of emotions and other strong feelings. The book makes you feel that your are their because the main character describes all the battles and the palaces and the situation he in to survive and meet new friends

I give this book to thumbs up for being really detailed and a great connection with the main character

Summary: Absolutely wonderful...
and an excellent introduction to Alexander himself. As another reviewer said, it's such a good book, you don't want it to end.

Summary: The real deal
Mary Renault's "Last of the Wine" represents the gold standard of historical fiction. Few of her rivals can match her intimate knowledge of her subject, yet her writing is never didactic or dry. Through her fiction we feel as if we are living in ancient Greece, not perusing some modern reconstruction. She is a master illusionist.

Set in Athens during the final years of the Peloponnesian War, the novel is the story of Alexias, a man who always seems to be near the center of key events. Through his eyes we meet a galaxy of the city's best and brightest, from the ever-entertaining Socrates, to the grim and brilliant Plato, to haughty Xenophon and haunted Phaedo. Contrary is some previous reviews, these characterizations seem fresh and real, like portraits of living people taken from life. (Beware anyone who seriously compares Renault to Stephen Pressfield, who seems the use the Greeks mostly as ancient action figures, and only seems inspired when writing battlefield porn.) Few can rival the skill of her writing on a sentence-by-sentence level--her dialog snaps and bites, and her descriptions are poetry.

One can quibble at a few things--there do seem to be a number of suspicious coincidences in the plot, contrived mostly to keep Alexias in the center of things. But such minor blemishes take nothing from Renault's achievement.

One final word: some object to the implicit homosexuality in the book (there is nothing overt in it). It is a very small mind indeed that demands that every period in the past conform to our modern prejudices about who should admire, love, or go to bed with whom. To put it bluntly--if you can't accept that ancient Greece was a different place, with its own standards, to be taken on its own terms, then Renault isn't for you. The loss would be yours.
Summary: Sad to say I didn't like it
I wanted to like this book. And no this had nothing to do with the homosexuality. You have to be a doofus to pick up a Mary Renault if you are offended by it. The success of a book in the end depends on how well drawn the main characters are. In this case they were too one dimensional and difficult to love. And I was rather shocked by how the Peloponnesian war became a dry series of events without a single climax (though there should have been several). I hate being this harsh since I loved her other books. More than once I found I was plain bored with it all. This may have been because I have read other more exciting books about this time (especially Tides of War by Steven Pressfield). Whatever the case I could not get into the story.

However, even in this instance, there is no denying that Renault is a great writer. The novel is well researched and should be read by any interested in Ancient Greece. But the storytelling, I am afraid, was a bit parched.

Summary: Living History
Some reviewers seem to mistakenly believe that this is a book about a homosexual protagonist. This is not true. Rather, it is a book about a culture in which, when a father has "The Talk: with his teenage son, he lectures his son about how to chose a male lover, not a woman. "The Last of the Wine" brilliantly details Alexias' youth and coming of age in the vibrant religious, political, and intellectual culture of Athens. It seems very alien to the modern reader, and it is sometimes difficult to keep track of the numerous side characters. The writing can be dry at times, overall "The Last of the Wine" is a highly recommended read for anyone interested in Ancient Greece.

Summary: Completing a masterpiece

Mary Renault completes her masterpiece, The King Must Die, in this novel. The story-line is complex and feasible. Renault is the finest writer of historical fiction I have ever come across.
Summary: A magnificent tale of heroism, romance, and tragedy.
The word "tragedy" is bandied about so much nowadays that it has become devalued. Any death, accident, or painful occurrence is routinely labeled "tragic". But if you want to understand the true meaning of tragedy, read this book! Theseus is a hero - a difficult idea for modern people to accept, in our prosaic times - and Mary Renault does a brilliant job of showing us his heroism, rather than just telling us about it. When danger threatens, when a firm hand is needed, Theseus instinctively takes over; and he always assumes, as he has done since early childhood, that one day the god Poseidon Earthshaker will demand his life in return for his people's safety.

The long series of disasters that, to us 21st century folk, just looks like the worst of luck, can in fact be traced directly to the flaws in Theseus' character: for, although heroic, he is far from perfect. His virtues are great, but so are his weaknesses; and pride is both the best of his virtues and the worst of his weaknesses. The phrase "train wreck", used by at least two other reviewers, is supremely apt because it connotes inevitability and terrible consequences stemming from an apparently slight cause.

Yet, just when things look blackest and he is sure of dying in disgrace, old, crippled, and forgotten by gods and men alike, Theseus is touched by a divine grace that fulfils his fate and completes the pattern of his life. The harmony of this novel is as perfect and satisfying, in its way, as that of a Bach cantata. If you can read the closing pages without at least wanting to cry, you probably have not fully understood the story.
Summary: Wonderful book! Great depiction of a brave hero...
This is one of my favorite books! From Theseus' charming nature, to his adventures with Pirithoos, to the passion between him and Hippolyta, this book was beautifully written. Having hardly known anything about Theseus, this book got be completely obsessed with ancient greek history. It portrayed the Greek culture in eloquent words, and showed me how people lived. Mary Renault truly shows her talent in this book. What a novel!

Summary: Truly, Twilight of the Gods
The third bookof this magnificent retelling of the life and times of Alexander the Great focuses on the 8 years following his untimely death. It is said he left his far flung empire to "whoever is strongest" - some dozen noteworthies began contending for the succession, often by assasination of their peers, with labyrintine plots described in graphic detail. The action, enhanced by the tribal clan allegiances of Macedonia, was more Byzantine than that produced centuries later under the aegis of Constantinople, and truly illustrates the Greek conviction that the Gods despise hubris. This may well be the best historical fiction ever written..
Summary: Book three the finale.
Last of the series about Alexander the Great, Ms.Renault really surpasses herself. The book starts of with Alexander last ours of life, his death and the chaos that he lives behind.Perdikkas his friend a military, tries to keep the army out of the reach of mutiny. Here enters Arridaios the handcapped brother of Alexander.Comes to the throne and everything turns wrong. He has the face of Philip of Macedonia, and yet he cannot hold public office. He is retarded. What will happen to him? The unborn heirs of Alexander from Roxane of Sogdiana, and Stateira daughter of Darius? What will happent to the widow of Hephastion?
The army is in disarray, things are different and yet everybody expects Alexander to wake up and come and guide them. The body is left for 2 days, without mummification, and yet when they go back into Alexander's bedroom, his not decomposing. His body looks gorgeous.
A very sad book of the last hours of the Greatest Conqueror of all time.Iskandar.How sad as to what happened to Macedonia, Persia and all the conquered territories after his death.
Summary: Visceral, A Fitting Finale.
"Funeral Games" is the final stroke of Mary Renault's epic Alexander trilogy. It is a haunting, exciting novel on the world tearing itself apart after the death of Alexander and the confusion engulfing his men as to who will run the vast empire, or more precisely, who will be master of the world. As always Renault's use of detail shines, she does a wonderful service by taking history and showing all the drama, passion, heartbreak and ambition hidden between the words in your school textbook. She demonstrates how history is a human story, propelled by the same kind of emotions that apply to everyone. The main character of Alexander dies early in Babylon, and he remains more of a haunting presence through-out the book, it works to great effect and it is fitting that Renault concludes her trilogy that began with "Fire From Heaven" and "The Persian Boy" with the events that happened after Alexander dies, we see how the world falls apart with his abscence and how men who do not have his flare or fiery intelligence struggle to run a world mesmerized by the unifying vision of the Macedonian conqueror. There is no main character here, only individual stories and tragedies. The characters are brilliantly written, the strong Eurydike with her Amazon spirit, the half-wit Philip, Alexander's disabled brother who is declared King is written with a sweetness and comedic touch while Kassandros, Alexander's arch-enemy burns off the page as a cold killer after the spoils. Renault has a way of exploring interesting characters set-up in the previous novel of whom we wanted to know more. Here we really get to meet Roxane, Alexander's Bactrian wife and mother of his heir. Renault brilliantly parallels her with Alexander's mother Olympias which raises the Oedipus issue. The novel rushes through the years in a fever as characters conspire against each-other and there is the feeling that no one is safe. "Funeral Games" is also notable, like Renault's entire body of work, for it's richness in language and construction, you realize these stories are not written simply as examinations of antiquity but of life in general. There is a sense of humanity and spirit that propells Renault's novels and this one is no exception, these feel like real people experiencing large events in their own time. "Funeral Games" plays like the best dramas, it always feels alive, outcomes are uncertain, sometimes even for those who already know the history. It is a wonderous epic of dark times after the passing of greatness, and how our ambitions fuel us and how our hates can destroy us. Renault has honored her love honorably, with the kind of understanding, insight and scope he deserves. There has never been a better series of novels about Alexander The Great, it is hard to imagine there will ever be another.

Summary: Amazing Guy
Where is Alexander when we need him...now!
After reading the big-long bio of Howard Hughes I'm thinking he may have been a reincarnation of Alexander.
Too bad the real story of this phenomenal person is not taught in schools, youth of today would be much inspired by the philosophy and life of Alexander. He was certainly one-of-a-kind. Compared to the vapid, lying, greedy "leaders" of today he truly was a "god".
After reading the the two novels about him, also by Mary Renault, this was a fitting end to my quest to know more about the Alexander that piqued my interest when I happened on Oliver Stone's interview talking about making the movie.
PS - anyone who sees the movie should watch the 'special feature' with Mr. Stone first, to really appreciate the scope of his endeavor and the importance of Alexander. Oh yeah...and read M.R.'s books too.
Summary: Fire from Heaven
This is one of the many outstanding books written by Ms.Renault.She depicted Alexander as all of us would imagine him.Handsome, loving, fierce, mercyful and great.Although so many books have been written about Alexander, all in all we will never know if as a person he really indeed was that Great.

Summary: Mary Renaults's Pet Alex
Mary Renault has always had a thing for Alexander. With her lesbian background in mid-century UK I guess this is not surprising. We have her to thank for much of the current fascination with Alexander's alleged homosexualty and such. This is a compelling work nonetheless, and while the bias and emphasis are obvious and perhaps a bit annoying at times, we can forgive Ms. Renault for being a bit over zealous in her passions. What she tries to do is provide a rationale for some of Alexander's actions. Sometimes she can be faulted for reading too much into what limited information we have on him. Still, this is a passionate look at the man and his times. There are many Alexander's for us to ponder. Perhaps because he was so many things to so many different people, and because of the limited documentation many scholars are free to pursue their own views on what he might have been. Mary Renault is no exception in this regard. To me Alexander is primarily the Great Captain of history. He was never defeated in battle, his conquests ranged far and wide, and his tactical abilities were supreme. He should be remembered for this brilliance as opposed to his sexual proclivities which are important only for those who have certain aggendas to pursue. True Alexander had many different sides to his character it seems, and his short but full life is packed with all sorts of fascinating events. His conquests can be divided into many distinct phases toward his character. Was Alexander a liberalizing influnence who spread Hellenism for the benefit of mankind, or just a thuggish tyrant who ran amok in the decadent Persian Empire. The verdict shall remain open on this and many other questions involving his life. For sure this is a very pro-Alex bio. Renault can see little wrong with even some of his most controversial actions. But her writing style is grand and elegant, and even if slanted, is perhaps no more so than some of the revivisionist bios we encounter today. Alexander shall forever suffer from extreme view points. The nature of his life and achievements seems to make this so even in our own time. Renault is good at possibly reading into his thought processes at certain key moments of his life, and she paints a compelling portrait of his sense of mystery and pathos which ultimately contributed to his demise as much as anything else might have in the end.

Summary: MASK OF APOLLO
THE MASK OF APOLLO by MARY RENAULT describes in astonishing detail the life of a pagan actor during the height of Hellenic culture. As with all of Mary Renault's work, The Mask of Apollo is so realistic in exploring the social milieu and character motivation of the times that the material seems "channeled" through the author. In The Persian Boy a homosexual relationship between Alexander the Great is sensitively woven with threads of minute historical so typical of the writer.

TOP PICKS: FIRE FROM HEAVEN; BULL FROM THE SEA; THE PRAISE SINGER; THE KING MUST DIE: THE LAST OF THE WINE.

Summary: the Mask of Apollo
After reading _The King Must Die_ and loving it, I picked up _The Mask of Apollo_, hoping for the same - I just couldn't get it to it. I found the plot too slow, and the characters unlovable. I would rather have read a non-fiction history of the time; this book just couldn't keep my interest, though I am interested in the history of the period. I haven't given up on Mary Renault - I plan to read _The Fire From Heaven_ soon.
Summary: Passion, the Future and the Gods
There are three elements that make this a great novel. First is Renault's ingenious device to critique Plato and Dion through the eyes of an actor. Plato's greatest intellectual flaw, to many, is his devotion to logic at the expense of the passions. The actor, who earns his bread through the inspiration of passion, can see instantly the weaknesses and where they will ultimately lead.

Second, in this book more than any other, Renault makes you feel the presence of the gods. She does this with subtlely, and one is always left wondering whether Nikeratos the actor is imagining (or, indeed, scripting) the voice of Apollo coming from his mask. But in his heart the reader knows that the voice is genuine and that it always leads Nikeratos to his best self.

Third, this is the novel in which Renault really situates herself in a past, present and future. She even makes subtle jokes about it. (Nikeratos, in a fever, dreams of playing Hamlet -- although if you didn't know Hamlet you'd never get the joke.) In this novel, much more so than in those that preceded it, she makes up her mind that all Greek history leads to or from Alexander. This is the novel she wrote just before Fire From Heaven and she has already decided where she is going.
