Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Derivative, ignorant This is a terrible book, written by somebody who is totally ignorant about football (please, use the proper name for the game) and seems to have decided to write a book based on secondary sources, puff pieces and ignorant oversimplifications. It would take too long to discuss the numerous inaccuracies, exaggerations, mistakes and so forth present in this horrid tract. Just as an example, when dealing with Jewish football he never mentions the peregrinations of Israel through UEFA and Oceania (for WC qualifications). Yet this would be exactly the kind of topic to be dealt with in a book purporting to explore the intesection of 'soccer' (sic) and geopolitics. Compare this with Kapuscinski's 'The football war' for a vastly superior and more intelligent treatment. Summary: Bad research, condescending tone Wow, was this book a disappointment. What a pompous title for a little book full of anecdotes that seem to be based on a two week research trip. This book says nothing about globalization and little about soccer that anyone living outside the US doesn't already know. Foer's research is less than poor. A lot of his information is based on hearsay, entire chapters seem to be derived from other people's writings. Obviously Foer wasn't aiming for the academic analysis his poorly chosen title suggests, but even anecdotal journalism needs more than one or two sources per story. As a Half-American living in Europe, I was hoping for a fresh perspective, a look at soccer from "the outside", but most of what Foer delivers is so old and has been rehashed so many times it's almost become a cliché. His tone is often self-righteous and his pious political correctness just drove me insane (in a book about soccer!!! Dude, it's a working class sport!!!) His attitude toward his protagonists is unbearably condescending and arrogant. One example out of his chapter about racism toward black players in the Ukraine: "Ukranian feelings are too primitive to even warrant the suffix "ism". They feel something closer to a naif's dislike of the unfamiliar, like an eight-year-old refusing to try dinner at an Ethiopan restaurant." Wow. I wonder how many months he stayed in the Ukraine to come that sweeping conclusion. Based on the rest of the chapter I would guess not even one week. Summary: Brilliant work on soccer around the globe and at home Franklin Foer's creative and intelligent work on the impact of soccer around the world is a great read, a real page-turner. His nine essays show how soccer can be seen as an important part of globalization, but at the same time, has helped burgeon the anti-globalization sentiment in many locations. Foer's expeditions around the world give the reader a chance to understand the meaningfulness of soccer to different societies, with all the positives and negatives that come with it. A must-have for any fan of the world's game. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Excellent book for 13 yr old boy My son is very selective about the books he reads, and does not get easily interested. Often he reads a few pages and then puts the book down. Tangerine grabbed him from the first page and kept him keenly intereseted until the very end. We're fans of Mr. Bloor now. Summary: Good book I had to read this book for school in eighth grade and loved it. It has just enough twists and turns to keep a young easily distracted reader interested. I recommend this to anyone who like books that are slightly odd and a little bit out of the ordinary. Summary: Mallory McDonald Do you like reading books that are filled from cover to cover with exciting information? If this is the case, I highly recommend you to read this book in particular. In the story, Paul Fisher is a kid whose main focus in life is soccer. He and his family have just moved from Texas to Tangerine, Florida and he's having a hard time fitting in. After the Fisher's had arrived, they began to realize that strange things were happening in Tangerine. First there were the fires that had been burning for years underground, and the mysterious amounts of thunder and lighting that occurred everyday at the exact same time. Strangely, even more weird things began to happen, as Paul attempted to uncover the secrets of his past, while remaining a normal teenager at the same time. As I said earlier, this book will keep you hooked the entire way through. Also, the author does a good job at describing what's going on really clearly with out giving away too much, so that the story keeps your interest. My favorite part was during Paul's first soccer game on his new team because I couldn't put the book down, and I was excited to find out what would happen next. After reading this book I learned that you have to stand up for what you believe in, and do what you know is the right. Also, I realized how important it is to persevere until you accomplish a task. I hope you choose to read this book because I know you will enjoy it. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The Mind of The Hardcore Sports Fan Hornby takes the reader into the mind and obsessions of the hardcore sports fan in "Fever Pitch", a tale of the author's obsessive relationship with Arsenal, one of London's main football (soccer) clubs. Many of the reviewers here note that the book is filled with detail about English soccer, and that therefore it was dull and boring for them. The reality is that this is precisely what Hornby intended to convey: how the diehard fanatical fan is obsessed with numerous details and trivia surrounding the team they support, well beyond a level that is comprehensible to any non-hardcore fan. Americans who read the book assume that they can't relate because of a lack of familiarity with English football, but in reality what Hornby is portraying is the most obsessive sort of football fan you could ever come across, something the "typical" English sports fan cannot relate to either. And he portrays it by allowing you inside his mind, giving you a guided tour of just how obsessive and extreme he was (and is) about football and about Arsenal in particular ... giving the reader an insight into the mind of an obsessive sports fan, rather than providing a detached analysis of what makes such a person tick. For those who are interested in understanding how the mind of a hardcore sports fan works, "Fever Pitch" is without equal. Even if American readers find the football references unfamilliar, the more telling aspect is the obsessiveness with which Hornby recalls numerous minutae, the lengths to which he has gone in his life to support his Arsenal obsession ... these are commonalities of mindset that apply to obsessive fans of all sports, including those familiar to Americans, and the mindset that Hornby portrays in this book will help all readers better understand just what is going on inside the minds of their own local sports fanatics. Summary: Reveals the behaviour of a typical fanatic soccer fan! All Arsenal soccer fans should read this book by Nick Hornby. It shows his obsessions for Arsenal with a fine sense of homour and wit. It is filled with RAW honesty which will definately increase the male hormones of the British working class-soccer fans. Hornby also shows his passion for the ups and downs of the typical fan of Arsenal. His emotional outbursts are extreme (to say the least) and would leave the reader laughing on the floor. A MUST read! Summary: Not bad, but never engaged me I like Nick Hornby and I'm an Arsenal fan, so I should have loved this book...but I didn't. Maybe I'm just not a fan of memoirs, or maybe a memoirist has to have a more interesting life than Hornby's, but I was just never caught up in this book. I was never wondering what was going to happen, never wondering how things were going to work out. If I hadn't been an Arsenal fan, I probably would have put this down one day and never picked it up again, not because it's bad but because it's forgettable. It just meanders from one random, wry musing to another. A word of warning: if you don't know anything about English soccer, you might have a hard time following this book. Do words like "Anfield" and "Gazza" ring any bells? If not, you're not part of the target audience, and it could be tough going. Summary: |
| The Thinking Fan's Guide to the World Cup

| ISBN: 0061132268 List Price: $14.95 Amazon Price: $9.72 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Thinking Fans Guide to the World Cup A mediocre effort I have to say. It's a good idea in principle, but in most chapters there seems to be a tenous link between the author and the country being written about. Merely travelers who happen to have been there for a game. To get to the true soul of the country a writer from that country should have been chosen. Though it might have been hard to find a togolese writer, there is surely one writer from a newspaper that could've been found. Instead they get a Kenyan to write about Togo. That's stupid, and falls for the lazy perception that all of Sub-saharan Africa is somehow the same. It's not, there's great difference between East and West Africa. It would be like asking a Russian to give insight into the role of soccer in England. Hopefully this book just suffers from a first edition sloppiness, and hopefully the publishers put better effort for a new edition in 4 years time. Summary: Great context to the World Cup Not only were the essays well written, but they also helped provide some context to the teams which competed in Germany. The stories of national pride, political history, and intertwined factions that surround the sport across the globe gave me some rationalization for the hours and hours spent watching matches during June and July! Highly recommended, even after the tournament! Summary: In World Cup withdrawal? Give this one a read. OK, here's an (approximate) scorecard for this book's chapters on 32 nations in the World Cup (some categories overlap so totals are more than 32): Good essays that teach a LOT about soccer in a country .... 25.5 Examples: France, Brazil, Germany, Costa Rica Meandering, non-soccer essays, still interesting for good writing ... 5 Example: Portugal Cheap shots at the United States: 3 * Example: Iran, United States Meandering, non-soccer essays ... 1.5 Example: Czech Republic, Ecuador (.5) Hilarious, read-it-aloud to your friends ... 1 Example: Australia and the Soccceroos! Final score: This book is flawed, but a winner. By the way, Dave Eggar's essay on the United States has an excellent section on how Americans hate diving and a passage that I would dismiss as pure conjecture, saying soccer was thought to be the sport of Communists (a sport invented, or at least codified, in the United Kingdom -- ?). It's interesting to note that the Australia chapter also notes suspicions of soccer as ominously Mediterranean. It seems that in the U.S. and Australia, soccer certainly did seem foreign. TTFGttWC may not have predicted Zidane's head [...] but it does in fact state (page 125): "Wayne Rooney [is] very strong, incredibly skillful, and as alikely to get a red card, possibly for swearing, as he is to score one of the best goals you've ever seen." The writer got that one correct! Do read the remarkable tale of the Socceroos. Their history is hilarious and indicative of FIFA politics. This chapter may be a good illustration of the value of TTFGttWC. It's typical of the sort of thing soccer nuts already know but we newer fans don't. TTFGttWC will fill in the gaps in many folks' knowledge. * In a book edited by Americans no less! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Good read. Interesting read. I grew up watching the games in England in the 80's and was unaware of quite the extent of violence that went on. This would be an ideal book for someone studying about crowd violence or football thugs. I did however find that the book was difficult to read in parts and did it not seem to flow. I thought some of the detailed analysis of crowds was un-necessary and would have preferred more detail on the thugs and violence. Summary: Great Narrative, gets lost when author becomes too analytical I really enjoyed this book and tore through it in three days. It really does capture how the working class of Britain has degenerated even as its standard of living has reached levels of comfort that would seem unimaginable a few decades back. There is something about the game of football that tends to drive working class males crazy in almost every country, from Argentina to China. The author does however lose steam in the middle of the book when he attempts to psychoanlayzie crowd behavior. Overall very good read Summary: ultra violence at its best The old saying of "don't judge a book by its cover" does not apply here. I saw this book, its cover and title, read the back and bought it. It did not dissapoint. If anybody is looking for insight into soccer hooliganism, then this is the book for you. Buford, an American ex-pat, infiltrates the Manchester United hooligans. At first he attempts to share their perspective in his book, but as the story unravels, he becomes one of the hooligans. This gives readers a first hand account of their lives. The scenes are ultra violent. This book is truly a modern day Clockwork Orange and the Man U fans are so crazy and violent that they make the Raider Nation look like a Girl Scout Troop. GREAT BOOK!! Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A huge help If you've never played soccer but want to coach your son or daughter's team - buy this book. About the only place it comes up short is in teaching the really little ones (Kindergarten / 1st Grade...but it still helps) but all in all it's been an invaluable tool for me. I've used it for 5 years now and have lent it to several people. A very good buy. Summary: Comprehensive, not just drills As a great follow-on to the original "Baffled Parent" beginner book from Bobby Clark, this one is much more than just practice games. It contains the type of wisdom you will hear in the USSF "D" and NCSAA Regional Diploma courses, so that the novice coach has more to go on than simply doing some game because it's in the book. It should help him/her to structure practices that make the players think, keep them active, and work towards a theme. It goes beyond telling them not to do the three "L"s (laps, lines, lectures) and gives them some tools so they know what they should do instead. I'm buying 150 of them for the coaches in our rec program. Also recommend the McAvoy and Luxbacher books. Summary: Great stuff! Don't let the title fool you. This is a great book for coaches who want to have fun at their practices and games that teach skills. Use the games at the beginning of practice and the kids will have fun, pay attention and improve. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The Champion Within Finally a book that deals with the biggest part of any sport...mental! They say that being a goalkeeper is 90% mental yet very few books give you tips on the ins and outs of getting in touch with that part of your game. This book is great at giving you ideas on reaching your champion and bringing it out on the pitch. Not only a great book for directing coaches in this aspect of the job, but also a valuable tool for players to reach their individual successes and full potential. Summary: A great insight into the National Team's training model The most insightful book on what makes or made the US Womans National Team such a success. Great read for Club Directors and Coaches alike to develop their own program based on a proven training model. Summary: Outstanding For All Soccer Coaches Read this over a year ago and re-read recently. In concert with Anson Dorrance's Training Soccer Champions, this is really a terrific book for all soccer coaches - men and women. Very inspirational and informative. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Entertaining! I bought this book and Carpe Demon for vacation. I expected them to be total fluff. I was so pleased to read them, I went straight through both of them. Of course, that left me without anything to read. Imagine Buffy all grown up, thinking she left her slayer days behind, to then suddenly be pulled out of suburbia into active duty. Luckily Kate is still in pretty good shape and remembers her training. Summary: Great Book! Julie Kenner's style of writing is easy to follow. This is an excellent book especially for moms who wish they had a little more excitement in their lives. I recommend Carpe Demon, which is the first in this series. Summary: WAY better than the first one!!! The first book in this series, "Carpe Demon" wasn't all that great, IMHO. I only read it because I realized CA Demon was the second in a series. CA Demon captivated me and has a hold on me now! I can't wait for the sequel. You should probably read "Carpe Demon" to understand "CA Demon" even though I don't particularly recommend the book because it is a great read. Like I said, I was bored by the first one but "CA Demon" totally captivated me. I can't wait for the third book. I have no idea what Kenner has in store for us but I am anxiously waiting. I REALLY hope it lives up to my expections. Summary: |
