Summary: changed my life
i was very skeptical when i picked up the book. i had read books with similiar promises to help you succeed in life. but none of them ever REALLY helped me. This book though, from the first chapter caused me to think deeply about my life and what i was living it for.

With four simple agreements and some very entrancing stories this book has changed my life forever. I will never be the same person I was when I picked the book up. And believe me you, the change was for the better. Now I no longer have any major stress about anything. I don't try to please other ppl as a goal. And one of the major changes of mine, is that I now no longer allow what anyone says about me affect me because I now realise that it has absolutely nothing to do with me, as whatever they feel is due to their own dream and way of thinking.

I can only hope that more people will experience the power and love this book can bring.

Summary: Simple, Practical, and True
This is a wonderful text. If you are intersted in re-discovering four habits for living a happier and fuller life, this is the book for you. Furthermore, you get them in the package of Native American wisdom and insight. Who can doubt the power and humanism in such a historically rich culture as that?
The greatest element of this text is that it is simple to read and fast. You could read it in a couple of hours. You can read this text with the benefit of knowing that it isn't buried in pages of thoughtlessness. It is direct.
The four elements are really great. They aren't earth-shattering. However, they are practical and obvious. Fact is, it takes a concise and clear book like this to remind us that life is capable of being more meaningful. We can be in control.
I can't imagine someone not being able to benefit from this text. It is self-help, spiritual, and motivational.
Summary: Beautiful book
This book is about living with integrity and living it to the fullest. Here are the four agreements the author recommends that you must make with yourself.

Be Impeccable With Your Word
Don't Take Anything Personally
Don't Make Assumptions
Always Do Your Best

To achieve the 4th agreement, Always Do Your Best, I recommend Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self. I use Optimal Thinking to resolve upsetting feelings and make optimal choices no matter how tough it gets. These are two books you will keep and refer to forever.

Summary: Very Enlightening
God gave us a mind so that we may use it at will. This book tells "the truth" and some are ready for it, others not. Anyway, it is perfect for those ready to use our God given gifts to "create" the kind of life they choose. I am grateful for the teachings in this book, they are practical and can be used in our daily lives.

I first got the audio version, which I listened to in my car. I recommend that because some of the ideas in this book can be hard to grasp with at first. Then I bought the text version to have hard copy to underline and write notes on. For those ready, this is the best.
Summary: Conversations with Donald or Conversations with God?
Problems with the book:

1) In the book, God mentions the teachings of several masters (about 20 different times throughout the book). Notice that each time after a master is mentioned by God, Donald will then in great detail describe that master's teaching and life. There is never a time that after a master's name is mentioned, that Donald doesn't do this. This book is supposed to be about a conversation that all of a sudden happened out of nowhere when Donald was at a depressed stage in his life. Doesn't it seem odd that Donald already had such an elaborate understanding of these masters including esoteric new age concepts during this conversation. How could Donald have all of this information unless he had studied all of these master's teachings before hand. This leaves the possibility that Donald read the material of all of these masters and then rephrased it into a compilation he then called his own.

2) There is a mistake in the book about one of the names that God mentions. Donald later admits to the mistake in a follow up book. Donald reason for the mistake is that he just heard the name wrong. How could he have heard the name wrong if Donald originally said that the pen was in a way, writing on it's own. Even if Donald was hearing God's voice, wouldn't God say, "hey wait a minute, you made a mistake in the name you wrote down"

3) The majority of the content is not new. The concepts are not new. If you were to study all of the esoteric concepts of the world, you would find all of the same things he is mentioning in this book

4) In the beginning of the book, Donald mentions several times that the pen stood straight up and began to write by itself. Later in books down the road, Donald changes his story and says it is a voice that he hears and then sometimes he questions if it is himself or God.

The book is consistent with concepts found in near-death.com, Edgar Cayce, the Seth Material and Brian Weiss's past life regression books. This book in a way tries to answer why the world is the way it is and your purpose in life. It provides a logical explaination of how many of the dominate religions and esoteric beliefs fit together in a way that makes sense.

You can find an audio of this book and many of Donald's other books on audible.com. This audio version of this book is nicely done. As to whether this is Donald having a conversation with Donald or Donald having a conversation with God will have to be determined by you.
Summary: Ex-Poster Girl for Post-Modernism will tell it to you straight...
Look, we all would like the world to be solely about us! Even my 2-year-old wants it that way, but that's just not reality. If I allow him to grow up thinking that it's all about him, then at some point he'll have to join a Unitarian church, find an astrologer, and read books like CWG to make him feel secure about his place in the world!

Seriously, who among us doesn't have the intellectual honesty to admit that there truly is evil (otherwise known as sin) in the world? Since the beginning of recorded history, our planet has been plagued with wars, violence, child abuse, murder, addiction, incest, hatred, jealousy, etc. And with the existence of evil, does it not stand to reason that there is also some objective standard for good? The problem in this post-modern world is ever getting people to actually acknowledge that this might actually be the case.

Look, I've done it all in search of joy, inner peace, and communion with God: Buddhism, astrology, tarot, Taoism, numerology, palmistry, seances, reiki, Hinduism, crystals, shamanisn, spirit guides, paganism, neo-paganism, wicca, and transcendental meditation (and this doesn't even include the list of controlled substances I used!)

But this is the truth: (1) God is the only one who can give us joy and inner peace; and (2) Jesus is the only way to God.

(I know it seems strange that He would set it up that way. I mean, come on, a crucifixion? It seems so cruel, and smacks of some odd, ancient pagan rite. Well, study it. Bring your challenges to God. Question and research the historical accuracy of the Bible. He can take it. And yes, I agree that a lot of Christians are annoying. Especially the uptight, hypocritical, judgmental "Christians" who spend their lives looking down their noses at everyone else. I had the same problem with Christians that a LOT of new Christians have. I was a new Christian, in love with Jesus....and yet I didn't care too much for the "Christians" around me. But you know, God will put you where He wants you, and you will be fulfilled beyond your wildest dreams. Who knows? Maybe your place in the world is to be a breath of fresh air in a small, stodgy, homogenous congregation that has never truly had to practice tolerance, inclusiveness, and God's grace. But I digress...)

Bottom line: if you want to have your own personal conversations with God, the good news is that you can. You don't have to read about them in a book, you can personally experience and commune with the Creator of the universe. The bad news, well, the author of this book may have been having conversations with somebody, but it wasn't God ;>

Summary: Beautiful book that values the here and now
This book is the best of its kind with respect to embracing the present moment. Written from a spiritual perspective, this book builds peace and joy. Eckhart Tolle believes that we need to detach from the past, recognize that it is just a memory, and stop robbing ourselves of living life fully in the here and now. He believes that if we don't forgive past hurts, we are resisting life in the present moment. This sure made sense to me.
Summary: Get the Audio CD, not the book
I highly recommend this. I've never been a big believer in reading or listening your way to a better life, but this CD has truly made a remarkable difference for me.

I think that many people misunderstand Tolle's ideas because they've read the book, rather than listened to the audio CD. They are worlds apart. The CD is Tolle himself speaking, and it is very powerful. His presence and enlightened state is obvious in his tone and energy alone, and the words are delivered in a more comprehensible, digestible way.

For those who say Tolle's approach to the past is misguided, I think they misunderstand what he has said. For example, one reader writes:

"I disagree with him about the past because it often contains unreleased trauma that directly impacts our life in the present moment. We may find for example that we have severe judgments about ourselves and other people, or that we have volatile mood swings and we may not know why. By accessing and then releasing past trauma we have a better shot at living the present moment as it is, instead of how it is distorted by our defenses, moods, and judgments, almost all of which are the result of early childhood conditioning. If you accept Tolle's approach, the past goes unexamined because it doesn't count. But you are the past and the more you know that past-I mean truly know who you are instead of your stories about who you are-the greater your possibility of having an authentic experience in the present moment."

Tolle does not recommend to forget the past, ignore the past, or leave it unexamined. He simply does not recommend that be your focus. He acknowledges that pain and suffering are unavoidable and that we must move through them. His recommendation for dealing with the past is to stay in the present. Indeed, if you have an unresolved issue or trauma from the past, it will undoubtably surface in the present, in the form of thoughts, memories, feelings, pain, behavior, etc. That is unavoidable if you stay present. Then you can be present with those things until you move through or past them. Many people are afraid to handle it that way because they are afraid of the ways past trauma will impact their future life... but of course, neither the fear nor the imagined future have anything to do with the present.

It's true that dealing with past trauma requires a great deal of presence, and often faith, and can often be best aided by a very aware counselor (consider those who have trained at the Alchemy Institute in N. California)... but it is well worth trying. In those moments when time, past and future disappear, life can be incredible and peaceful. Of course, like anything, it takes practice.
Summary: It really does work if you give it an honest try
I really don't know how anyone can listen to Eckhart or read his books and not feel something. I wonder if the people here who gave such bad reviews really tried anything he suggests.

Put you attention in the body for a while and see how it feels different than normal waking life.

It really will work if you just remember to do it. It's easy to read a book or listen to a CD and say "that doesn't work". Just try it and see for yourself.

Eckhart Tolle even says that some people won't find his book helpful if they aren't ready to do it yet. If you're not ready to actually do what he says then fine, but to come on here and say that his teaching doesn't work is just misleading. It's going to be very helpful for some and not for others. It just depends where you are in your journey.

As for the question of "is Eckhart enlightened?", how can anyone know that or judge him? An enlightened person couldn't care less if people say he is or isn't enlightened.

Summary: Review of the Book of Enoch
I think all Christians should read it so that they might see the vast difference between that writing and our Holy Writ we call the Bible. The first thing to know is how much one's own belief system can claim as 'truth'. Most of Christianity takes for granted the teachings from the pulpits of any variation a "personal" evil being or beings. Religions from around the world including Eastern philosophies to satanic occultism center themselves amidst this concept, that there is somehow in Heaven, a being or a number of angelic beings, "fell" into lust with women. Most Christians believe in such a one as the "Devil" or "Satan". The accepted norm is to believe that a fantastic other worldly group of beings have fornicated women on this planet and were now in a purgatory of sorts. It is contended to be a world of a "spiritual" dark force ruled by the Devil as it were, and with his minions they are affecting evil on the earth somehow through people.
For those who believe in this creature and want to know where the origin of this teaching is from, then they should read this book.
Now I know why it is Apocrypha and not Cannon. You will know also why the occultist likes the book so much. The true contents of the quotes in the New Testament haven't been altered. But put your seatbelt on for the rest of the story... 200 angels lusting after women and even swearing an oath of fornication with women, birthing giants... whoa!
Because of the affect upon Christianity in affecting such a belief, I rate the book a zero. But because Amazon.com is way cool and courteous and the shipping is AAA! I rate a 6... so three is in the middle:)

Summary: The Bible's missing pages
After buying this book and reading the negative reviews here, it seems clear to me that there is a church inspired agenda resenting Prophet's book and what she has to say. For centuries, the subject of the Book of Enoch has been forbidden within the Catholic church and this will not change in the near future. Therefore, if you want to enhance your knowledge of the Book of Enoch, the Catholic church and why Enoch is missing from the Old Testament, then Prophet's book is really the only one to have. You will not regret buying this book, but you might enrage a few church fanatics if you dare to speak about it.
Summary: Do not waste your money on this book.
Prophet writes this book as a fanatic, with blinders on. She leaves absolutely no margin for other possibilities as to the interpretation, translation, or social anthropology of the time.
While it is widely known that the Catholic church edited the bible and destroyed many of the books relating to the old testament, the book of Enoch alone does not solve any riddles, puzzles, or mysteries. So much so for book by Prophet.

Summary: my spiritual path
This book had helped me to follow a different path and to find a different pattern of living that I was seeking for my life.
Sogyal Rinpoche is a great master. The way he talks about tibetan philosophy is simple yet insightful. In his book, master Sogyal Rinpoche bring us a new percepctive of living well, that for me was very helpfull to understand the true meaning of tibetan budhism and to practice this "new concept" in my daily routine.
I am very thankfull to my friend Andrea Chammas who had showed me the way...
Summary: The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying: The Spiritual Classic & International Bestseller; Revised and Updated Edition
I found this book difficult to read and understand. There are so many footnotes and other distractions that I was unable to remain focused on the central theme. Its value to me is off the scale to the left.
Summary: Skilled Overview Of Tibetan Principles But Doesn't Make Death Any Less A Thing Of Horror To My Western Mind
This is a well-researched book that covers its topic with a professional thoroughness. I admire the author's devotion to a subject that makes most of us, especially in the twenty-first century United States, cringe. I have nothing negative to say about his Buddhist slant here and think he describes the Book of the Dead and its passages well.

"In the Occident, where death is much feared, the art of dying is little practiced."

How very true.

All that said, despite Gaffney's seeming love of death (not just acceptance, but real embracing love) the state of biological conclusion seems horrific to me. Were I a believer in an afterlife, if I could just have faith, or better yet, proof, then I might subscribe to his "death is an opportunity to evolve" view, but all I can see in death is an ending filled with pain, the cause of grief, the separation of loved ones. I tried to wrap my mind around the views herein and I do find interest in contemplating another cosmology's take on the ending of a physical (chapter in) life, but to me, death remains a concept steeped in horror no matter how deeply I have tried to grasp for a way to hope that we might be reborn, either on this earth or in another plane, the bardo, Heaven...anyplace.

This book ought to become the edition of choice for those who seek an accomodating starting point for one of religion's greatest texts. My lack of feeling for its tenets in no way means I do not regard this as a fine book that might help many people study Tibetan viewpoints or find peace in the inescapable fact that is death.

Pace.

Summary: Who gets this stuff?
I have read a good part of these glowing reviews and I must just be stupid or something. I really love hearing different opinions and alway hope that I will be enlightened by hearing a new view. I have listened to one of Deepak's books on CD before and was confused. I listened to this one and had to rewind and listen to ideas up to four times. I really love Deepak's voice... I love that Indian accent.... But the ideas seem to be idiotic. He makes assertions without any basis and then starts on a lot of junk science to support some of his notions. I guess that all of you DP readers are used to this Newage stuff, but it makes no sense to me. I will not waste any more money on Deepak's work. This book will probably work for you "feel good" believers, but if you have an ounce of logic, please look elsewhere.
Summary: Changed Me
This is the first book I've read of Deepak, and I must say, it is something that more people should check out. This book helped me realize new and better ways to go spiritually. A must read.
Summary: A book for your life
This book has much practical and lofty wisdom that is just invaluable. Many ideas and concepts found in classic spiritual writings are touched upon within these pages by way of the "Secrets". This is thus a sort of grand spiritual summary written especially for contemporary spiritual seekers and signposted by way of the secrets that could really be thought of as common knowledge at a higher level of consciousness than what is the norm in our society. There are many gems of truth that will strike a chord deep within. Most people that would read this book would, in all likelihood, already have a spiritual inclination. Deepak Chopra has given us a gift in writing this book for these times. I thus recommend it very highly.

Summary: Inspiration For The Tough Days
All of us have days when all we can do is put one foot in front of the other and make it through the day. I have kept this on my coffee table for years, along with several other books of inspiration. It is better than a cup of coffee - a true spiritual "pick me up". I say "Thank you" to the author for taking some of my tough days and turning them around for me!
Summary: Many Diamonds In The Rough
---review of original 1991 edition---
This book contains many words of advice that the author gave to his son when he went off to college plus more suggestions the author came up with later. There are a lot of gems (like: #15 Own a great stereo system. #23 Floss your teeth. #119 Put a lot of little marshmallows in your hot chocolate.), but you have to separate them from some of the more dubious observations (such as: #74 Eat prunes. #110 Spread crunchy peanut butter on Pepperidge Farm Gingerman cookies for the perfect late-night snack. #311 Don't waste time playing cards.).
Summary: I love these snippets of wisdom.
My sister had this book sitting on her coffee table. Whenever I was over her house I couldn't resist picking it up. As the rest of the family was interacting with each other, I would be pouring over H. Jackson Brown's practical words of wisdom.

The genesis of this book is a wonderful and heart-warming story. When the author's son was heading off to college, Brown decided to jot down a few words of wisdom to help his son through his college years. He typed it up and presented it to his son as they dropped him off at his dorm. A few days later his son called to express his appreciation of this "best gift ever".

The theme of these little instructions can be summed up by saying, "Be responsible, be positive and be appreciative." Still, you have to love the humor, joy, and practicality of each one. Some of my favorites are: No. 274 "Leave everything a little better than you found it." No.503 "Be alert for opportunities to show praise and appreciation." And No. 30 "Never buy a house without a fireplace." (Oops! Too late.)

Finally, to everyone who enjoyed this book I would encourage you to read another book of wisdom, The Book of Proverbs. Its words of wisdom are even better. (After all, Instruction No. 115 is " Give yourself a year and read the Bible cover to cover.")

Summary: Spiritually Fortifying
A coming of age book of a young male having dimmed hopes of gymnastic glory, this book is a must read for any young male seeking a path to enlightenment. Through numerous exchanges with an old saintly Wizard named Socrates, the narrator expands his perspective on the journey of life. To truly becomming a peaceful warrior, one must continually explore, retain, and focus in on the present, sub-consciously feeding one's life meter with new experiences and observations upon which to accumulate and feed off in future years. Just as a saintly oracle would profess, Socrates' message is to always strive for more optimism, better relations, and more knowledge and curiosity by being in the now.
Summary: Excellent inspiration
A good introduction to a more satisfying life, Good story, well told and inspirational
Summary: Your Personal Guide
A very well constructed story-guide to leading a more fulfilling life. There is nothing fancy, nothing too "left-field", about this book.

Aside from the theme, the story is quite compelling. I would seriously recommend this book to any adolescent, or at least anyone about to embark on a new phase of life. The growth that occurs within the character is enchanting.

A very enjoyable way to learn some very important lessons about balance and living in the NOW.
