Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great book but it's for young I spy beginners This is a really cute book and would be perfect for a I spy beginner and a younger reader. My child is 3 1/2 years old and she loves I spy books and this is not for her. I gave it five stars because if I had purchased this last year when we were at a different level it would be fine. I will keep it and bring it out when my son is a bit older. Summary: Very Good! I bought this for my two year old and he loves it. He knows where all the pictures are ( he did before we left the store) an he still sits there with it in front of him for long peroids of time. I am trying to get the whole set. I don't know how many are in the set though and I was hoping that there would be some place where you could buy them in a complete set. Summary: Perfect size for families on the go! A smaller version of the full sized I Spy books, these books are just great. They include cropped pictures from the regular I Spy books and are printed on durable cardboard - just right for little hands! My two year old loves this collection of books - they are just the right size for her to hold, are sturdy enough for her to play with, and there are lots of interesting pictures to hold her attention. The pictures are lots of fun to look at. They give parents the opportunity to sit with their children and discover the different things in the pictures and to help their children identify them. These are all very good books!! I highly recommend. Summary: |

These I spy books also made nice birthday gifts for some other children we know. Summary: My favorite of the I Spy Series! My family has enjoyed I Spy Picture Riddles for many years. I Spy Treasure Hunt is my personal favorite. The reader is invited to search for hidden items on pages that represent an imaginary seaside town. The first puzzle page features the train station, while the next two page spread is the "View from Duck Pond Inn". Eventually, the Pirate's treasure is revealed! I enjoy the less flashy and cluttered look of this particular book, though my kids seem to highly enjoy all the I Spy books. I recommend them for all ages! Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: A counterfeit spy The most respected historian in the field of espionage, Nigel West, studied all of Aline's spy books marketed as nonfiction and concluded "...all four of Aline's books should be regarded as fiction, and nothing more..." Read "Counterfeit Spies, Chapter 3, by Nigel West, 1998. Summary: Fascinating Page-Turner Written like a fiction novel, this factual, first-person account of a young woman spy during World War II is absolutely enthralling. You'll get a first-hand look into what it's like to be recruited and trained as a spy, then go on your first assignment, mingling with the highest Spanish society while secretly risking your life to uncover essential Axis secrets. The characters in the novel are rich and compelling, and you never know what's going to happen next to the protagonist/ingenue Aline. I read this book in the '80s and have remembered it ever since. I finally found it again and reread it. It's just as fascinating now as it was then. The only drawback: If you read at night, you won't get much sleep because this book is nearly impossible to put down. Summary: A Spanish teacher recommends "The Spy Wore Red"...to ALL! Reading and re-reading The Spy Wore Red is a wonderful experience! Most of your other reviewers agree, but there are two aspects they seem to miss: the richness of Spanish cultural information and the possibility of a change in role for women. Aline Griffiths is bright, well educated, and departs from traditional women's work to lead a daring, adventurous, downright-dangerous job. As a Spanish teacher, I have recommended The Spy Wore Red to my high school students for years. Several students who later spent their college junior year in Spain have come back to tell me how much this book meant to them and how much more they appreciated it following their sojourn there. They could catch glimpses of the old Spain in the new, simply because they had read this thriller. World War II began as the Spanish Civil War ended(1936-1939), so Aline Griffiths arrived as huge social changes were about to occur in Spain. This book provides a superb peek into the "old" Spain, the Spain of high romance and extraordinarily traditional, now-antiquated values. Yet it is described in context of a delightfully novel-like autobiographical tale. Although it reads better than most spy fiction, one can take notes on Spanish culture on virtually every page. It is engrossing, culture-rich, and shows a young American girl from Pearl River, New York, doing the kinds of things of which only a grownup Nancy Drew type might have dreamed. Summary: |

We also bought I spy books for other kids that we know and they were hooked. Makes a nice gift. Summary: I Spy is a terrific series. My husband and I have more fun with these books whether it's with our grandson or our friends. We really get into it and found that it helps our eye coordination and our memory. I would highly recommend this to anyone at any age! Summary: Truly a great learning book! I find these books great mind stretchers, even for us older folks. This book especially is a learning tool because there is a page with all the letters of the alphabet surrounded by little objects that start with each letter. Another page groups things by category with overlapping categories. Really well done. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Trouble in Khemed An oil crisis breaks out, leading Tintin to the Arab Emirate of Khemed. There he works his way through a series of escapades in the desert and the cities of Kemekhal and Wadesdah where Tintin must deal with the thuggery of the local Arabs . Tintin meets with Emir Ben Kalish Ezab and agress to rescue his kidnapped son Prince Abdullah leadfing him to confront his old enemy Dr Muller, as well as the impossibility of dealing with his charge, the young Abdullah. Quite fast moving and without the flow of some of the Tintin books, this adventure is nonetheless jam-packed with action. We discover that behind all the troubles are agents of a foreign power (Most likely the Soviet Union, whose menace had finally been recognized by the West when this book was first written, in French, 1950. As usual the rest of the gang such as the fiery Captain Haddock and the disastrous Thompson and Thomson add to the brew! Summary: One Day Your Car Goes Boom! With the completion of The Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun, Herge finally saw an opportunity to resurrect The Land of Black Gold, a story he had originally concocted nine years before but was forced to abandon due to the wartime shutdown of Le Vingtieme Siecle. As Michael Farr points out in his formidable book "Tintin: The Complete Companion," in 1948 German villains were no longer taboo; thus Herge could introduce this tale complete with the nefarious Dr. Muller, last seen in The Black Island. Of course, there was much revision to be done before The Land of Black Gold could appear. At the time of its creation there had been no Captain Haddock, no Professor Calculus, no Marlinspike, etc. Herge cunningly surmounted this hurdle by having Haddock appear briefly at the beginning of the book and explain to Tintin that he has been called on to assume command of a ship. He then reappears - as do Calculus and the house - just in time for the story's end; thus Tintin can go it on his own for fifty-some pages, just as was originally intended. This story marks a couple of important benchmarks: first of all there is the debut of the little menace Abdullah, son of the Emir Ben Kalish Ezab. (The scene where Haddock looks after him in the desert is a special highlight.) Also in this story is the return of good old Oliveira da Figueira, Tintin's salesman friend from Cigars of the Pharaoh, who is always ready to be there for Tintin when he needs a hand. Fortunately, the end of The Land of Black Gold does not mark the end of Abdullah and father: both were to make further appearances in The Red Sea Sharks eight (?) years later. Indeed one of the most wonderful aspects of Herge's stories was the unexpected popping-up of former bit players: there was no old friend, old foe, or (as in Abdullah's case) old pest whom we could not expect to see again one day. Summary: Tintin and Snowy avert an oil crisis in the Middle East "Land of Black Gold" was the first Adventure of Tintin I ever read, so, of course, it has a special place in my heart. It seems that all around the world cars (or lighters) using petrol are exploding. In a storyline eerily prescient of what would happen decades later with the rise of OPEC, the world is on the brink of an oil crisis. In the Middle East the evil Sheik Bab El Ehr tries to overthrow Sheik Ben Kalish Ezab, so Tintin heads to the Middle East to save the day. Throwing a monkey wrench into the proceedings, in addition to the omnipresent evil agents and hapless Thompson brothers, is Abdullah, son of Sheik ben Kalish Ezab, who pulls a constant string of practical jokes on everybody in sight (Historical Note: This is where the Thompsons first develop their habit of becoming extremely hairy at inopportune moments). I always think of Tintin as constituting "realistic absurdity," which reflects the way our hero plunges on despite the lunacy around him, which exists mainly in the characters rather than the situation. This delicate balance seems to be reflected even in Herge's artwork, where his "clear-line" style combines iconic characters with unusually realistic backgrounds, appeals to me. I also admire his remarkable restraint with Snowy, who "talks" less than any other "talking" dog in comic book history. These are truly timeless tales. More Historical Notes: "Tintin in the Land of Black Gold" (the 9th Tintin Adventure) was the episode in progress in "Le Vingtieme Siecle" when German troops invaded Belgium on May 10, 1940. Herge suspended the story for eight years and actually began another adventure, "The Crab with the Golden Claws," in the interim, which was published in "Le Soir," one of the few newspapers authorized during the German occupation. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: BAT The bat on page 19 is a baseball bat, held by the boy in the picture glued to the inside right door (just above the word "workshop"). Summary: FOUND THREE SPRINGS The three springs on the library page: 1) on the "Smoke" book next to the chair ("Smoke" is on top of "Science Experiments"), 2) on the floor in front of the chair, and 3) on the grandfather clock to the left of the saxophone. THANKS for finding the striped cat! Summary: Austria needs help! Through friends in the US we got to know the great I spy books, but unfortunately we are not that perfect in English. Could someone explain to us what "birdies of brass" are? We don't even know what to look for! And what about the "ostrich beak"? Does that really meen the beak of an ostrich or is there a completely different meening of it when these two words are combined? And: could anyone give us a hint where the bat on page 18/19 is? To help the person who looks for the third spring on page 16/17: we assume that you are looking for the one on page 16 on the very edge where the books are (left from the wishbone)! Summary: |
