Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Crappy Bar napkin sketches The following is an opinion for which we are all entitled: Although this book does tell you something about each artist and shows one sketch from each artist, it is more like a "Collection of bar napkin sketches". Most are of poor quality as if the artist could care less when he/she had drawn them and a very few are of some quality. As an award winning artist of over 35 years experience, I felt it was a complete waste of money as far as being helpful to further my talents or to "just plain enjoy". I would never show such "doodles" in a book to represent what I can do. For something to glance through to kill time, I would say fine, go nuts. Overall....I AM NOT IMPRESSED! Summary: One of my Top Five Tattoo Books This book is big, hard, and beautiful. It is loaded with fantastic tattoo pics. This book is a "must-have" for any tattoo library. 'Nuff said! Summary: graphic gems from tattoo artists: a pathbreaking book Rarely has the tattoo art form enjoyed a presentation in a volume as remarkable as Heimburger and Bratt's "The Sketchbook: 80 Unique Designs by the World's Finest Tattoo Artists." For starters, the "Sketchbook" does not feature photographs of tattooed bodies but rather brings together a set of original graphic designs produced by artists expressly for this collection. Then there is the beauty and quality of the book itself, which has been published by Hotei, the Leiden-based publisher best known for its first-class books on Japanese prints. Most of the artists represented in the "Sketchbook" are fairly young and, with the exception of several members of the Leu Family of Lausanne, are not yet well-known. Their work is complex, however, and the short autobiographies provided by each artist provide insights into the special world and close relationships of the international community's best tattoo practitioners. Traditional Japanese tattoo themes dominate the graphic work, but fans of modern art in general will note and enjoy the resemblance of much of the work to that of the 20th-century surrealists and even to the specialized art genre known as exquisite corpses. Indeed, the artwork presented is so fascinating and potentially rich in symbolism that I wish it had been displayed at The Drawing Center in New York's Soho district and introduced by scholars of modern graphic art. Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: Misled I was under the impression that there would be meanings for most of the designs.Don't get me wrong, there were some nice designs, but, I was looking for meanings for the symbols and drawings. Summary: I think youre a little misaken most people expected to find amazing custom pictures of peoples tattoos in this book. this is a "tattoo flash art" book, with simple drawings, like the ones you would see pnned up on walls. the black and white pencil drawings are for stencil perposes or customizing colour. these arnt custom tattoos, theyre just simple drawings for art purposes. works great for airbrushing too, just draw out the stencil, cut it out and paint Summary: Call me crazy... Call me crazy, but I like this book. Yes, the cover is misleading. You won't find any tattoos like that in this book. But I liked a lot of the pictures. If you are looking for a book that you can take a picture out of and have tattooed as it is, with no modification, this is not the book for you. But there are some great pictures, especially in the sections on Borders and Flowers, that would make a great basis for a tattoo. As long as you have a good artist to work with, you can use any of these pictures as a foundation and then work out your own variations and colors. If you want a tattoo that is unique and personal, there are plenty of pictures in here that you can use as a springboard. I agree that the lack of context is annoying since so many pictures in the book are from various cultures. But if you find a design that you like enough to have tattooed on your skin permanently, it's not too hard to do a little research and find out more about what it means. Guys: you probably won't find much in here that appeals to you. Girls: you would probably find something that appeals to you. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: cool book to have, but ............. I cant seem to find it ANYWHERE! it seems that this book is so way out of print, no one is willing to part with a USED copy either. I would love to have a copy of this, but, when you cant even buy it used, well, i might as well forget it! to all the lucky folks who have a copy, i really think that is great! PLEASE when you are tired of it, put it on EBAY or something, so i might get to read it too! geez! Summary: Salute To The Sailor Sailor Jerry is a legend--the likes of which is almost impossible to find today. He was both an artistic and technical genius and certainly deserving of the title Tattoo Master. He was also a bit of an old coot. Sailor Jerry is a lot like a dad. Though you don't necessarily agree with all of his views, he's still an inspiration. I'm apprenticing as a tattoo artist and he sets the standard that I strive for every day. Not just as a good tattoo artist. Not even a great one. But the best. I'm proud to have Sailor Jerry's beautiful illustrations tattooed on my skin. A tribute, so to speak, to the master. This is a great read regardless of your being tattooed or not. It explains a lot about tattoo history, particularly the development of the shading needle, and the importance of military symbolism in Hawaii. And Sailor Jerry's illustrations are just beyond description. Perfect in every detail. A very endearing book. Makes you want to talk to your dad about the war and get "Twin Screws" tattooed on your butt cheeks. (Or is that just me?) Summary: |

The hibiscus and the peony don't really look very much like a hibiscus or peony to me, but they're pretty enough in their own right. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Fantastic resource Easy to read, follow, and use right away. Shows formal, modern, flowing, and stylish character sets. Describes the root, meaning, and nature of common Japanese words and phrases. The calligraphy is excellent. I only wish it was longer and more encompassing. Among other things I use this book as a supplement to Write Your Name in Kanji text by Nobuo Sato to write the characters more elegantly. Lawrence Kane Author of 'The Way of Kata' and 'Martial Arts Instruction' Summary: Who would have thought I would enjoy a book like this? We had recently seen "The Last Samuri" so I was in the frame of mind to learn more about Japanese history and culture. I found this book on the Breakfast table one recent morning. The introduction and explanation of Kanji was clear and concise. This book provided a great beginning to the subject of how a culture influenced a language and how a language influenced a culture. I couldn't put it down for an hour or so. I'll refer to it often. Summary: A Stroke of Genius! How lucky I was this holiday season to have received Designing with Kanji: Japanese Character Motifs for Surface, Skin and Spirit by Shogo Oketani and Leza Lowitz. From the beautiful cover to the exquisitely illustrated text Stonebridge Press has done it again! Oketani and Lowitz have taken an art form that is little understood in the United States and have made it accessible. I have always been drawn to "Asian things" in my home from artifacts to flower arranging, and the Kanji calligraphy and historical background helped me clarify my fascination with the genre. I had no idea there were other Kanji fonts such as modern and stylish for instance.I particularly appreciated the poetic description of each illustrated Kanji and the little Kanji Facts interspersed throughout the book. I have no tattoos and am not expecting to get any in the near future however, this book is for anyone wishing to understand the Japanese "character". Summary: |
