Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Right on the Money... I had heard Nunberg's interview with Teri Gross on NPR and decided that was one of my "sit on the beach and read" vacation books last week. The other reviews say it but here goes. Democrats have a terrible time getting ONE message across because they are diverse and want in include everyone. Nunberg shows how trying to be inclusive and compassionate with your rhetoric only makes you wishy-washy. Republicans can be given big credit: THEY HAVE ONE MESSAGE BECAUSE THEY REALLY DO NOT CARE WHO THEY OFFEND. In this day and age it wins an election, sadly enough. Nunberg's comments on Bill Clinton are especially fascinating, Clinton came up even more rungs on the ladder for me after reading this. Clinton understands the rhetoric of politics and how to unify people, Franklin Roosevalt did too (as Nunberg points out). Summary: Genuis (and enjoyable) I saw Geoff Nunberg speak on June 13, 2006, at a book store in Menlo Park. He is both briallant and inspiring. An incredible read. Summary: Losing the Language War A scholarly expose of the linguistic nuances of political doublespeak could prove deadly boring. But in TALKING RIGHT, Geoffrey Nunberg proves himself an able and funny commentator and educator on the topic. He traces and annotates the evolution of political and media euphemisms, lingo, and nomenclature in the U.S. with a gimlet-eyed stare. Yet even with the brio that Nunberg brings to his theses, one wonders: Is the failure of liberals (or "progressives," if you prefer) really an inability to get a good motto on a bumper sticker? Or is it simply that since Clinton, there has not been a compelling leader to take charge of the Democratic Party? Anyway, regardless of your party affiliation, if you're politically aware and/or enjoy thinking about the meaning of words and/or have an interest in American history and current events, you will get something from this book. (Did I leave anyone out?) SIDELIGHT: With a book that deals with linguistics and meaning, one hopes that the author is an expert in his field. Impressive academic credentials aside, Geoffrey Nunberg chairs the Usage Panel of the American Heritage Dictionary. That's good enough for me. (Imagine the rousing discussions they have in that group!) Summary: |
| The Fair Tax Book: Saying Goodbye to the Income Tax and the IRS
Publisher: Regan Books |

| ISBN: 0060875496 List Price: $14.95 Amazon Price: $9.72 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Everyone should read this. Everyone knows that the current system is wrong. This spells out a better alternative. Summary: Boortz wants a Welfare state The so-called Fair Tax sets up a welfare state where the spoiled children of billionaires (like Paris Hilton) get billions of dollars for nothing. They didn't work for it and they didn't earn it. Yet Boortz thinks this "welfare" is the greatest thing since televangelists and country music. America is about working for a living and earning your keep. This communist philosophy that some are "more equal" than others so they should be allowed to keep what they didn't earn tax free is the pinnacle of Bortz's argument. The Fair Tax plan is akin to starting a Monopoly game after all the good properties are sold and have hotels sitting on them. Like saying, "I have Boardwalk and Park Place, and this entire side of the board, but from now on we will all pay sales tax on new property. However, I can keep the property I have tax free and pass it to my kids tax free too." If forces young couples to pay huge taxes on new houses while the rich can simply pass the property from generation to generation totally free of taxes. It kills social security and forces the government to borrow to keep up. It puts huge taxes on prescription drugs, hospital stays, medical treatment. Yet it makes stocks, bonds, and capital gains tax free. It is simply a way to push the tax burden to the poor and middle class. A good alternative would be to tax all money that was not earned or worked for. If you didn't earn it with your muscles or your brain then you should pay a sizable tax on it. If you got it for free without earning it from inheritance, gambling, capital gains, etc. then you should pay. That's FAIR. The ditto heads are always talking about how the rich pay higher taxes on their income. Income is a fanciful term dreamed up by tax accountants and tax lawyers that has no basis in reality. What we need to talk about is WEALTH. Ninety percent of the wealth is controlled by three percent of the population. Wealth is property, capital, stocks, bonds, and luxury items. People don't realize that most wealth people control private corporations where they deduct the cost of their food, travel, wardrobe, entertainment, energy bills, and housing and pay an average of 15 percent income tax on an amount that they decide to report to the IRS. Here's a real FAIR TAX - no taxes for anyone as long as you are alive. Spend all you have and all you make on whatever you want and pay zero taxes. But when you and your spouse die, the kids that get what you left pay a 50% tax. That's FAIR. Make it even more FAIR by letting the taxpayer tell the government what his tax dollars should be spent on. Every time you fill out a tax return you should get to pick from among 20 choices of where your money will go. Then make it illegal for the government to borrow money from the bank or from other government agency budgets. The taxpayer has the final word. That's FAIR. Summary: too much change too fast A National Sales Tax is such a radical change with so many different avenues from where it can be legitimately attacked, that whatever its benefits, it should be a complete nonstarter from a political standpoint. On the other hand, a flat tax with ONE and only ONE deduction for your home would vastly improve the current federal income tax and with serious support from the President could get through Congress. I don't know what allowing for a deduction for your home mortgage does to the numbers and what rate would be needed to make the plan revenue neutral. But not allowing the home ownership deduction would make the reform extremely vulnerable politically, and could be a fatal stumbling block towards getting any plan passed. Serious tax reform and simplification would be a major accomplishment for the President, and more importantly, would be an enormous boost for the American economy. A National Sales Tax isn't going to happen for a lot of reasons, the first being it is probably bad tax policy. But a Flat Tax or a considerably simplified income tax are very real possibilities, and well worth expenditures of President Bush's political capital. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Essential & Exceptional The phrase "essential reading" is a clich, however, this is truly essential reading for anyone seeking to understand competencies. Not bed-time time reading; this is a technical book for HR professionals. Detailed and lucid (although the neophyte may prefer to start with something a little lighter, eg some emotional intelligence work by Goleman). A good index and bibliography. Summary: Required reading to become a true competency expert I have studied and used dozens of books on the topic of competencies, and many are useful, but this is the one I return to most often. My copy of this book is ragged, dog-eared, coffee-stained, and marked by many colored tabs for quick reference. Competence at Work changed my approach to human resources, and I actually earned some national honors and recognition for innovations in assessment and workforce planning by using it as a guide. It yields an effective understanding of competencies and how to apply them in processes such as recruiting, selection, development, performance management, succession, and workforce planning. Some insights and tools in the book are particularly valuable: Criterion sampling: Operant measures: Competency definitions and scales: The principles and methods outlined in this book allow one to construct and apply competency models and human resource practices that get results. If I could have only one book on human resources, it would be this one! If I could have only three, the other two would also be by Spencer: Reengineering Human Resources and Calculating Human Resource Costs and Benefits. Summary: Good competence guideline This book present the components of the job competence assessment approach, including the competency dictionary, which lists, defines, and provides scoring criteria that can help you predict superior performance for most jobs,It's provided to step by step guidelines on how to use the dictionary in all types of job. You will understand what is competence from this book!I strongly recommendation! Was this review helpful to you? Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Books on amazon Great book and there was a great description on amazon web site and I it is just great. Summary: Excellent resource for a new Entrepreneur I found this book to be an excellent resource for how a small business owner can significantly reduce their tax burdon and personal legal liability. I gained a lot from reading it, but my father who was a businessman for 30 years found most of it to be "old hat" to a cagey verteran to the business world. For instance, he already knew when a S-Corp is right for you and vs. a C-Corp. When you should absolutely not be in an LLC.. So, if you are just getting started I highly recommend Inc. and Grow Rich, but if you are an advanced student, you may find it slightly elementary Summary: A MUST READ! This book has completely changed the way I look at, and live my life. It really puts the big picture into perspective. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: Don't rely on this book for an online course This book is filled with information but is not easy to follow. The ethical questions do not provide answers which leave you wondering if your own conclusions are accurate. The format tries to cover too much information without going in debth about anything. I used this book for an online accounting class and it was of very little help to me. This truly was one of the worst text books I've ever used. Summary: Late The shipping took 3 weeks and too late for class so I'm returned book I haven't heard anything I wouldn't recommend you to buy from this site Summary: Happy Student!! In great condition & ordered exactly what was promised. This book is very comprehesive. Gave me everything I need to know to file my tax return. ALOT of INFO. It's like having a personal tax planner right in your own home & you can plan at your own pace! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Great Resource This book is a very good resource for tax lien investing and covers some states very well. Because state laws are so different and always changing, it's not feasible to write a book that has current information for every state. This book accurately describes tax lien and tax deed investing procedures for most states. I found this book to be the most complete book in print about tax liens that I have found and it even has some information on deeds. I strongly suggest this book to anyone who want to get involved in investing in tax lien certificates or tax deeds. Summary: Great Tax Lien Book!!! I read this book twice over the weekend. It's great! I highly recommend it to everyone. Mr. Loftis did a great job of presenting his experiences at several auctions in different states. I did not take it as self-promotional fluff as one critic stated, but rather, as a way of showing the reader that he actually practices what he preaches. He mentioned that in the larger metropolitan counties in Florida, banks such as Wachovia send college students with lots of money to bid-down the interest rate to a low 0.25%. He suggests that beginners attend tax sales in the smaller counties in order to acquire better tax liens. Overall, the book covers the major points of tax lien investing in great detail and shows the reader how to calculate the yield under different scenarios. AS a busy real estate broker, i don't have the time to write a review for books but given the quality of the information in this book, I felt compelled to do so. I bought a tax lien package worth almost $2000 and compared to this book, it's worthless. I sent that package back and instead will keep this book as a reference. Hope this review helps. Summary: Good advice, but fuzzy presentation. I may be a novice to the whole concept of tax lien investing, but Loftis does a great job in helping me to understand this particular investment vehicle. The read is easy, although at times a tad confusing as he tends to use some real estate terms that haven't been introduced until a few pages later. As a long time investor of the stock market, I am surprised that there is such a thing as almost guaranteed, safe returns of up to 18% in some jurisdictions. That is amazing in and of itself, but to realize that not everyone is "on top of it" is just unbelievable. You can tell from the writing style that Loftis is no short story writer, but for the purpose of explaining tax liens, it suits him just fine. I would highly recommend this read for anyone who wants an alternative to losing money. Four stars. Summary: |
