Summary: An Essay, Not a Book
This review is of the audio CD (which is abridged).

The short summary - globalization is the follow-on to the cold war. Friedman maintains that the economic collapse in Asia and the fall of the Berlin wall are all manifestations of the new world rules, and it's not a coincidence they happened about the same time. He identifies several changes in economics which have made the US economy more open and democratic. The internet is a big player in these changes because it is the medium by which economic openness is communicated.

Many of Friedman's ideas I agree with, yet I felt something missing. The book's content doesn't feel complete. There is a bigger picture behind his observations, more complexity, and more depth. Much of the material I thought was over-explained where instead I would have liked more depth and insightful penetration.

Friedman tries to come up with catch phrases for his various observations. Not all of them worked for me, especially "golden strait jacket." I'm still not sure why it's a strait jacket, nor why it's golden.
Summary: Well written
This book does incredibly well in explaining the complicated topic of globalization. It's very readable but is not dumbed-down in any manner. Mr. Friedman tries hard to be objective with his views of the world. Although on some chapters, you can tell that he belongs to the optimistic group of the globalization debate. Whether or not you agree with his perspective, it still is worthwhile to read to see if his pronouncements will atleast challenge your own position.
Summary: Subtitled: "Globalism for Dummies"
This is basically an explanation of the world for 60-year-old people who have had their heads in the sand for the past 30 years.

Summary: Superior Writing
This is one of the best books I have read, ever. Her descriptions of her childhood, in story form, took me to a new world. Bravo!
Summary: A very special favorite!
I read this book the first time when I was ten years old. It was one of my mother's favorites, and after she had re-read it for umteenth time...she offered it to me. She had told me at the time that it was a favorite of my Grandmothers. I remembered liking it - but, at the time I was reading so much stuff that it just didn't stand out for me.

Several months ago, I came across the audio book on a sales table and thought I'd "give a listen". It was particularly long...but, 40 years after reading it the first time - I had a better appreciation for this book. The author was so good - I own HUNDREDS of audio books..and she's one of the best I've encountered. I absolutely fell in love with "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn". What an amazing story! Betty Smith is really telling the story of her life of extreme poverty growing up in Brooklyn in the early 1900's. She, and her younger brother struggle to find a place in this world among circumstances that were bleak. It takes you from Francie at age 6 or so to adulthood.

When I finished this audiotape - I quickly listened to it again (all 12 hours or so of it) and then sent it to my adult daughter Debi...and went and bought another one for my other daughter Danielle. Later, it was passed along to my eldest grandson Mark, age 12. It's incredible that it has touched the lives of five generations of my family in such a personal way.

Summary: One of the best books ever written
As I read this book, I find myself wishing that we valued education as much as the characters in the story. It's a great book, a classic, and one on "the list" of books that I want my kids to read when they are old enough.

Summary: The Bean Trees
Just moving away from home after high school is a girl named Taylor Greer. Now graduated can you imagine throwing all your plans you made for the future away for a child that's not even yours? As Taylor starts her long journey she is accompanied by a new friend she makes along the way named Lou Ann and her son Dwayne Ray. Her opinions and morals soon change once she gets a taste of how life really is.
Coming into this book was a little slow but it is definitely worth the wait. As you go along reading there are many things in Taylor's life that I'm sure a lot of you could relate to. The struggles that she goes through with her new child, makes you think twice about what goes on in this world right underneath our noses.
This book leaves you wanting more and is a great book for high school kids on up. I would not recommend for any younger as it would not appeal to their ages because it is a difficult book to understand at those younger ages. But for adults and teens it is great because we get the themes and messages throughout the book, and this book does have some really insightful things to bring to the table as well.

Summary: Love & Sacrifice
"Mama always said barefoot and pregnant was not my style. She knew."

Young and fresh out of leaving her mother's nest, Taylor Greer leaves rural Kentucky with hopes of making something out of her life. Well educated and independent, Taylor plans to head out to Arizona and avoid the teenage pregnancy epidemic which she blames on something in the water.

When Taylor unexpectedly acquires a child, she is forced to put her unfinished plans for her new life behind her. With the many responsibilities that raising a child have on a single "mother", will Taylor cave in under the pressure?

Barbara Kingsolver's THE BEAN TREES is filled with captivating, rich details that will entice even the least experienced readers. I have found this novel to not only be a true page-turner, but also a great inspiration to all who sacrifice their greatest wants for the needs of the ones they care about. THE BEAN TREES is truly an enthralling novel.

Summary: An Apologist For Hamas
Mr. Tolan seems to hold myopic views on the Israeli-Arab Conflict. He writes movingly of the displacement of Palestinians, yet won't even bother to write about why they were displaced. For in the majority of cases, the Palestinians were assured by the invading armies of Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, and other Muslim countries that the Jews would be driven into the sea, and not only would they have their homes, but those of the accursed Jews as well. Thanks to a citizen army, equally fighting for their homes, it didn't quite happen that way. Those who left for two, three weeks thinking that the Arabs would win ended up rotting in refugee camps. They didn't blame Nasser or Abdullah for their predicament, they blamed the Jews.

In only one case, that of Deir Yassin, were atrocities perpetrated against the Palestinians. In perhaps a few other cases, Arabs evicted from their homes were never allowed to return. For the Jews, it was one massacre after another - Kfar Etzion, where Jews were shot down, unarmed, after they surrendered to the "moderate" Arab Legion. The moderate Abdullah and his son, King Hussein refused to allow Jews to worship at their most holiest site once the Jordanian Arab Legion conquered the Old City of Jerusalem. It wasn't the King, but Israeli forces 19 years later that retook the city and opened it up to all faiths, including Islam. For those Arabs forcibly removed, consider the thousands and thousands of Jews forcibly removed from Arab countries, with not a few being murdered on the way. Contrast that with the behavior of Haifa's Mayor who openly wept and begged the Arabs to stay, and assured them sincerely of their safety. Contrast this with the bombardment of Haifa today by Hizbullah missiles.

The Bulgarian Jew who opened her doors to the Palestinian was not an anomaly but what the Israeli Jews are - a people who want peace. This reviewer truly wonders if the Palestinian Muslims would have acted in the same manner towards an Israeli or Jewish refugee. I think not.

Which leads me to why Tolan is not an author with credibility. He recently appeared on a radio talk show in Los Angeles, proudly admitted to his Lefty views and his Berkeley residence, proudly admitted his biases and did nothing but blame the Israelis for everything. Never mind the decision by Arafat to resort to murder and mayhem in 2000, even before 9/11; or the current crisis brought on thanks to a weak Israeli government willing to make all kinds of concessions for the sake of peace most Israelis truly want, and how Arab terrorist organizations, including one that the Palestinian people themselves voted in reacted in kind, cheering violence and kidnapping and killing Israelis.

The cycle of violence needs to end - but that can only happen when Islamofascists renounce violence, something Mr. Tolan in his role of Palestinian supporter, NOT even-minded, cannot get.
Summary: FROM A LEMON SAPLING A MIGHTY ___?___ MAY GROW
Sandy Tolan's THE LEMON TREE encapsulates the Israeli-Palestinian dilemma better than anything I've read to date. It does so by telling the true story of two families who occupied and loved the same house in the West Bank town of Ramla: the Palestinian Khairis who built it and lived in it up until 1948 and the Bulgarian Jewish Eshkenazis who lived in it from 1948 until 1984. It is the perfect metaphor for the intractable problem of two peoples who have historical claims to the same piece of real estate.

Tolan's central figures are Bashir Khairi and Dalia Eshkenazi who meet for the first time in the aftermath of the Six Day War and maintain a tenuous friendship into the 21st century. His narrative has a distinctly novelistic style. (In fact another Amazon reviewer refers to it as "a trashy, bitter novel") Tolan begins by introducing the reader to Bashir's and Dalia's parents in the 1930's and describing the societies in which they lived. As with Austen or Tolstoi, one absorbs social, historical, and political context while trying to guess where the story is leading.

For example, I learned in passing that Axis member Bulgaria did the best job of any nation in Europe of protecting its Jewish population from the Nazi death camps. One also encounters future leaders of Israel and of Fatah in unexpected places in Tolan's narrative. The order to expel the Arab inhabitants of Lydda and Ramla during the 1948 War was given by Lt. Col. Yitzhak Rabin. Abu Jihad, Arafat's right hand, who helped launch the first Intifada, was among the children expelled from Ramla.

THE LEMON TREE is not a feel-good book. Other reviewers have drawn hopeful conclusions from the relationship of Bashir and Dalia and from the planting of a new lemon tree at the house in Ramla. I am less sanguine.

Bashir Khairi, trained as a lawyer, has spent most of his adult life in Israeli prisons or in exile. The prison in Ramla where he was incarcerated was built on an olive grove which had belonged to his family for twelve generations. Bashir's conviction that the land of Israel and Palestine should be transformed into a single, secular, democratic state has few supporters among Palestineans or anywhere else in the world. Dalia continues to act on the belief that individuals behaving with good will can begin to heal the wounds that Israelis and Palestinians have inflicted on each other and upon themselves. Neither approach seems to offer a great deal of hope at the moment.
Summary: Emotional and uneven
This is a simple minded narrative of the middle east history. The Arabs are consistently protrayed as helpless victims of Israeli agression. It glosses over Arab atrocities. Three examples, the 1947 war of independence, is seen as an opportunity for an Israeli land grab. No mention of the Arab attacks on Israeli population. Secondly, the Jewish efforts to drain the swamps and reclaim the land, is similarly seen as part of the drive to increase the Jewish population at the expense of the Arabs. Third example, as cited from another reviewer, there is no discussion of the expulsion of Jews from Arab countries. Guess it's not worthy of objection.
The author has a simple minded view of a long term historical, involving many peoples with competing interests, and forces it into his ideological blinders.

Summary: Great kids books on CD
My kids (4 and 6) love The Magic Treehouse books. These CDs were a treat so they could continue to "read" after the lights are out. The only drawback: my 4-year-old son gets so involved in the stories that he has had hard time falling asleep. I worried the kids wouldn't want to listen once they'd read the books one time -- not a concern ... we listen over and over and over.
Summary: My kids loved this
I bought this for my 7yr old twins. They can't read the books on their own just yet. However, with the CDs, they have "read" the first 4 books in a matter of days. They have even hooked a few of their friends on the Magic Treehouse books in the process.
Summary: Peaceful Car Trips and more.....
I have four children - ages 5, 3 1/2, and 19 months (twins); I bought these cd's for the main purpose of making car rides more enjoyable and they worked like a charm. My two older children are asking to listen to the stories rather than watch TV, which is such a blessing! They are even asking to listen to them when they go to bed.

The only downside is that some of the stories are split between 2 disks, which makes it difficult when they want to listen to a particular story at bedtime or if they want to listen to stories in different rooms.

Overall the set was well worth the money!
