Summary: In case anyone over age seven doesn't know the story...
If I had only one Twain short story to recommend, it wouldn't be Jumping Frog- it would be "The Literary Offenses of James Fennimore Cooper". If I had only one Twain novel to recommend it would far and away have to be Huckleberry Finn. If it's not the greatest American Novel by the greatest American author, it doesn't miss it far. It has humor, satire, insight, adventure, romance, travel, tragedy, family, racial commentary, and on and on. It hits just about any and every issue that an author could hit, all without preaching, and all while maintaining a high level of enjoyment.

The story is so well known that I won't waste much time describing it, but young Huck, sort of raised by an alcoholic and abusive father, sets out for adventure on the Mississippi River with his boyhood friend Tom Sawyer and their runaway slave friend, Jim. Twain uses their voices to make some powerful observations about human nature, and much like a modern day Christopher Guest would do through movies, Twain through books builds up overly earnest characters who wear their hearts on their sleeves but are still people we care about. Again, if you have just one Twain book to read, let it be Huck Finn. And track down "The Literary Offenses of James Fennimore Cooper" if you ever want to read the most sarcastic short story in the history of the English language.
Summary: Old fashioned fun...in a book
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is a wonderful novel that is adventurous, humorous, and fun. The characters are believeable (one reason why is that Mark Twain writes in the character's dialects). The book really transports the reader into a differant time period.

The story revolves around Huck Finn. Huck is an easy going young teenager who is the son of a town drunkard. He recently made a large fortune. Because of this Huck is confined by schooling, shoes, and ,worst of all, manners. Huck had enough of this so he runs away. His small town assumes that he is dead, so he enjoy's the life on Jackson's island. When Jim, an escaped slave, runs away to the island. Huck decides to go down the Mississippi River.

Going down the river, Huck interacts with a variety of people, small towns, and adventures. The story is outrageous, but it doesn't matter. Huck more then makes up for it in his view of the world.

I would recommend this to most people because it is a very easy read and is entertaining.
Summary: The American novel
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is considered by many to be the American novel; the work that most closely represents the America experience. What then makes this such a great book to read, and such an embodiment of America? Many things.

First, this book addresses the issue of color racism thoroughly and subtly from multiple viewpoints. The latter includes the naive reluctant racist (Huck), the naive apathetic racist (Tom), those discriminated against (Jim), and of course the active, enthusiastic racists (most everyone else we meet in the book). Racism is examined from both the mental viewpoints; how individuals consider others of the same and different race, and from the social viewpoint; how individuals of different races interact in public and private. This emphasis on race points to the heart of American history; few other countries have struggled with skin color bias as long and as deeply as the US.

The second major point examined in this book is slavery; an issue strongly related to the first. Slavery as existed in other countries was rarely as delineated along color lines as it was in the USA. And rarely was it defined as a feature of different skin colors. For example, slavery throughout Europe was used as a form of criminal punishment. Likewise, slavery in the Middle East was a side effect of military conquest of one group of people by another. Not so in America. Here it was an inherent feature of how two races dealt with each other.

The third theme of this book that strongly embodies the American experience is the fractured / divided family. Walk through any neighborhood in China, India, Japan, Mexico, Egypt, Ireland or most any other country, and most of the children you encounter live with their parents, and most of the parents you meet live with their children. Unique among nations is America where many children do not live with both their biological parents. True now, this was true in the mid-1800s when this book's story takes place. Jim is searching for his family and Huck has left his. At the end of the book, they meet Tom, another boy who is not being raised by his parents. In fact, the two most stable families nuclear families encountered in this book are the Grangerfords and Shepherdsons.

This leads of course to a fourth feature of this book that is reflective of America; the family feud. For a country where everyone has so much, both back then and now in the early 21st century; Americans seem to have problems with neighbors. Nowadays, everyone wants a house with big yards to maximize separation between them and their neighbors, and neighbors rat on each other to their homeowners assocation. Back then, they had feuds.

The fifth topic dealt with in this book is the con. Unique to America is the role of the con artist in our history and culture. Consider Jim and Tammy Fay Baker, Robert Millikan and Charles Keating of modern times, and Ponzi of the early 1900s. In this book the reader encounters numerous cons and con artists. Huck himself cons Jim at the end of the book whereby he concocts a series of escape plans that puts Jim thru a series of ordeals, all for the naive amusement of Huck.

Having read several versions of Twain's classic by different publishers; this reviewer has only praise for this version. The book itself is a great classic and worthy of anyones time and effort in reading it.

Summary: Greed is Evil
This book was a page-turner because there were very exciting parts in it. It was not to hard to concentrate on the story but sometimes I had to look back in the book to check a character or a place. I did not connect to a character in this story because characters in the book kill many people mainly for money and I could not do that. I like the genre because it sounded like the story could really happen. I like the style of writing in this book, and an example is that the author makes the story very believable like it could happen to almost anybody. The book was not boring but very exciting and my mind did not wander when I was reading. I would recommend this book to people who like adventure and mystery books. This book was terrific because it held suspense and you would never know what event would happen next.
Summary: A Simple Mind
I know a lot of people liked this book, but it didn't work for me. The main character and his buddies run around like chickens with their heads cut off, acting as if they have committed a huge crime. The problem is, they didn't. There is no crime. I talked to several cops and a prominent defense attorney about this plot, and it makes no sense. It would make sense if someone comes after the McGuffin, early on, but no one does, not until very late in the book. So most of the story has no foundation.
Summary: This book is preposterous and I hate it.
The plot is ridiculous. The characters make absurd decisions that have me screaming at the book and teeming with anger. We are supposed to believe that Hank is a "normal, good" person who commits evil acts out of necessity, but really there are many other more logical, non-criminal steps that could be taken. He continually chooses the immoral path. I totally hate this book and the only reason I gave it two stars is because I am still reading it. Obviously if I hate it, but continue to read it, there is something in it that won't let me put it down. Maybe that was Smith's objective all along.

Summary: Beautiful
My mother was brought up very traditionally by my grandfather (who was from China), whereas I had a Western education and am currently living in the UK. This book speaks to me - almost every clash of culture written in the book between mother and daughter happened with me; the language barriers, the difference in thinking. I cried throughout the book and the movie because Amy Tan had managed to put all of it down so accurately.
Summary: Joy to read
Amy Tan creates a small short plot that takes up about 10-20 pages. The rest of the book is getting the reader very intimate with the characters and the situation of adapting to American life.

The characters of this book are real. The situations are also real. Anyone close to an Asian-American can attest to these types of stories. Tan does a great job of showing how the children grow up American and are unable/unwilling to relate to their parents. Teenage rebellion takes on new meaning when you are also rebelling against your parents culture. Tan does not paint china with elaborate imagery, but paints it in the readers mind with characters and actions that are foreign to western minds. The story is told in a non-linear method that adds to this foreign feel.

I would recommend this book to everyone. There is very little suggestive or violent content. Amy Tan deserves the praise that she has received for this book.
Summary: 300 Pages of Misandry
If you are a man, you will not like this collection of feminist essays. This book is worse than bad. It is an abomination.

Summary: He taught me how to cook
I love this guy, he taught me everything I need to know about cooking. My husband is hispanic and he says my mexican food is better than some of his family members, especially my salsas. Rick is great and I love his TV show on pbs-- his book has great authenic recipes that everyone will love.
Summary: Healthy, fast and varied
James Beard Award-winner Bayless approaches everyday cooking with two goals - easy preparation and nutritional balance, with an emphasis on one-dish meals. He omits complex traditional moles except for a simpler Oaxacan yellow made with masa harina and tomatoes and he frontloads the book with salads and sides, like Green Bean Salad with Red Onion and a salsa dressing or a Sweet Potato Salad with Caramelized Onions and a red chile vinaigrette.

He follows this with main dish salads and soups in which avocado, lime and tomato make frequent appearances along with smaller amounts of chicken, beef or sausage. And chilies, of course.

Several classic salsas - tomato, tomatillo, chipotle - preface quick meals from the grill, which include Grilled Fish in Tangy Yucatecan Achiote with Green Beans and Roasted Tomato Salsa, or Grilled Pork Adobo with Smoky Roasted Sweet Potatoes and Guajillo Salsa.

Of course there's a tortilla-based chapter (Tomatillo-Sauced Enchiladas with Spinach and Mushrooms, Seafood Salad Tacos with Tomato, Radish and Habanero) and a few desserts (Skillet Fruit Crisp).

Meat, Seafood and Poultry are grouped together and more often than not the dishes include vegetables and rice, potato or beans, continuing the one-dish theme. Tomatillo Pork Braise with Pickled Chiles, or Red Chile Chicken and Rice with Black Beans, or Jalapeno-Baked Fish with Roasted Tomatoes and Potatoes require little, if any, accompaniment.

"Riffs" at the end of each recipe provide preparation tips, variations and suggested embellishments, along the line of Mark Bittman's "when you have more time" feature. Luscious color photos include ingredients, techniques and finished dishes.

The recipes are bursting with bold flavor and while many home cooks won't make the "30 minutes" goal, the elimination of extra side dishes saves a lot of time and organizing.

Summary: Ugghhh!
This book was plain terrible. Nicholas Sparks' writing seems very amateur and there was nothing that made me want to keep on reading. This book was filled with cliches and forced moments to make it even more sickening and syrupy. I think I quit reading after 75 pages because Sparks, in my mind, did not create very likable characters. I did not care what would happen to Noah and Allie. The movie, however, is decent, but probably because I didn't have to sit through Sparks' mediocre writing. I think his target market of lonely housewives will soak it up, though. The only tissue I needed for this was the crying I did for wasting my time and money.
Summary: Fall in Love with this book!
I would give this book close to an infinite amount of stars. Yeah I know, call me crazy!

First of all, if you saw the movie before reading the book, I am soooooo terribly sorry. Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie but the book is just completely out of this world!
I read this book the first time when I was 19 and I've read it atleast 6 times eversince. I keep re-buying it because I give it away to friends. I miss the original cover!
This is the book that taught me what real love is supposed to be like, SIMPLE and SMOOTH! (at least in my opinion)

It is definitely an Epic. The first sentence just grabs you and takes you to a cloud to fall in LOVE. No, I will not tell you 1 detail of the story.
The only thing I can say is that Allie is completely different in the book than what she was in the movie and it just changes everything. Not for better or worse, just for a different feeling. This is the BEST book that Nicholas Sparks has written up to now. There is just nothing out there to compare it. It is my favorite book ever, so far....
Summary: Butterfly lover from Boise
Reminded me of a love I once shared.......... that I still dream about to this day......and can't seem to forget. I wish she would email me just to say she saw a rainbow.........

Summary: different from the movie-but couldn't put it down
This book was excellent. The character's names are the same but with plot twists and a whole different background scheme-the book is alot different than the movie-except one thing- it's also a huge tear jerker.
The book reads fast-finished it in one night- and Sparks creates each character just as vividly and complete as Tolken but with less pages and more concise.
I enjoyed this book and would def recommend it for any romantic, Sparks fans, or any fan of the movie. Excellent to re-read and have as part of your book collection.
Summary: Joyous and sad
I had already seen the movie when I read the book, so I knew the story in it self. It is very well written and captivating. A good read I "swollowed" very fast.
Summary: Keep tissues handy while reading this!
I had heard wonderful things about the book and movie "A Walk To Remember". I was completely engrossed once I started reading and finished the book in a day! I am glad I took the advice of other reviews and kept a box of tissues nearby as I read the book....it is a tearjerker! Such a heartfelt and moving story and I just fell in love with the characters Landon and Jamie. I just bought the movie and I'm excited to watch it with my daughter. Nicholas Sparks is a gifted writer and has a remarkable way of drawing the reader into the story. The emotions you feel as you read this book will touch your heart. I highly recommend this book!

Summary: Palahniuk's best book
I saw the movie first, like most people, and i thought it was amazing. three days after watching it, i still couldnt get it out of my head. I started connecting everything to the movie. Like, whenever someone mentioned going to a gourmet restaurant to eat I would picture the waiters doing stuff to the food. When I saw the book in Barnes and Noble, I of course bought it. But i didnt think it could be as good as the movie.

After reading it, I was like OMG. It was even BETTER than the movie! It's dark and, like the movie, it stays with you. I've read it like 5 times, and i neverever get bored of it. after reading Fight Club, I read Choke, Haunted, and Invisible Monsters. In my opinion, Fight Club is the best of all of them.

Even if you don't like Palahniuk's books, you should read this one. It's totally outrageous and completely different from his other books. It gave me a new outlook on society and made me see social divisions in a whole new light (and I'm only 12!)

Read this book!!!
Summary: Lots of Aimless Angst, But Meh. Nothing Stellar.
I loved the movie, but the book... meh. Didn't blow me away. I keep hearing about how much more awesome it is than the screen adaptation, but I just found it to be a little too boring. Besides, the author said in an interview that he liked the movie's ending over his own. HINT: It's never good when the author prefers the movie.
Summary: Great Novel
This is a great novel, though not appropriate for someone my age (14). I read this novel, and I thought is was very good. But as I said before, not normally meant for people my age. I reccomend this novel to waaay older audiances.

Summary: Is This A Classic?
First of all, I respect Frank Miller's work since I loved the Sin City series and Batman: Year One. But, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, in my opinion, is more for the Graphic Novel lovers and not for Batman lovers. This comic features Bruce Wayne 10 years out of retirement... which means that it has been 10 years since the last sighting of Batman... and yes, you guessed it. Something bad happens and he has to don the old, sweaty, stretched out size small bat-suit. There are a few interesting strips from inside Arkham Asylum featuring Two-Face/ Harvey Dent and The Joker. Personally, Joker is my favorite character from the Batman series, and when I saw him in Arkham Asylum I was like, "Oh cool, the Joker is just as insane and hysterical as ever." If you are a Joker fan, enjoy these few moments while you can. After this the Joker is sent out of Arkham and guest stars on the TV show "David Endochrine" (spoof on David Letterman). The Joker does do something cool here, but it's a little too Poison Ivy-ish... Bottom line is- The Joker isn't very entertaining in this comic book. He has barely any dialogue, and most of the dialogue he says is the things he's talking about in his head, but I must admit he did have a rather cool suit. Batman seems to use more weapons than he usually does in this one, and can't rely on his fighting skill very much. In one part you even see him using a sniper rifle! This is where he is looking to snipe someone on a helicopter, which is one of the more entertaining scenes. Another thing I didn't like about this comic is that a female Robin makes an appearance. Yes, I said it. A 13 year-old 4- foot redhead with a boyish haircut buck teeth and ridiculously large glasses plays Robin, and we are introduced to a new female Comissioner to take Gordon's place. There are also a few scenes that kinda creeped me out with this relation between Robin and the old Batman. Batman and The Joker have an entertaining fight scene... and Superman makes an appearance as him and Batman fight to make one of the most memorable comic book scenes of my life.

This can easily be called a classic by most readers, but at the same time be called an item to re-sell on eBay to others.

Summary: The Greatest Batman story EVER!
For years I had wanted to read this book, but it seemed when I had the cash to buy the book, it always seemed to escape my mind. Finally I had gotten myself squared and bought the book.

Was it worth the waiting? You better believe it.

The book starts off with Bruce in a race and his car blowing up. It then switches over to ten years down the road, it also was ten years after the last Batman sighting. A gang known as the Mutants has been terrorizing Gotham City and nobody has yet to stop them. The police are anything but helpful when it came to stoping the Mutants, until Bruce Wayne relives the death of his parents and decides to finally dawn the suit again and be Batman. The Dark Knight's reamergance does two things: threatens the Mutants control over Gotham and awakes an until recently catatonic Joker. Batman soon deals with the Mutant leader in their first fight at a garbage dump. Bruce belives he's dying and gets a new Robin as well. I've already given away too much, so you'll just have to a copy yourself. Its a great read and great time killer. Enjoy. Also I'm actually 15.
Summary: Excellence
It took me a very long time to read anything of Frank Miller's about Batman. As a fan since the age of four I was helplessly wedded to the conventional idea of the hero: Batman in his 30s, Robin is a boy (be it Dick Grayson, Jason Todd or Tim Drake) and Batgirl is floating around somewhere, probably. I was horribly opposed to the idea of an aging, decrepid Bruce Wayne toting around a female Robin and so I avoided The Dark Knight Returns. I'm sorry that I did.

This graphic novel is probably one of the best I've ever read. The writing is compelling, imaginative and wonderful and the artwork, though a bit busy at times, is spectacular and gripping. I cannot reccomend this highly enough.
