Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Twelve Sharp This book, in my opinion, didn't stray much from all other Plum novels. The usual laugh out loud read. Like most Plum fans feel, Ranger is hot, and loved getting closer to his secrets. My sister suggested I listen to the Plum series in my car, as I have a long drive and heavy traffic every day. I'm sure other drives think I'm loony, laughing my head off in my car! Sometimes, as I pull in my drive way, I sit in my car for a couple of minutes more, listening.... Summary: Trashy, trashy, trashy I started out as big fan of this series but I've watched it deteriorate with every new edition. These books are no longer humorous, they're crude and vulgar. I won't be buying another and I'm sad that what was once a clever and well-written mystery series has become schlock. Summary: Evanovich's best so far I absolutely loved this book! It was her best so far. She seems to be able to keep the personalities of her characters true to themselves!!! I am still giggling over some of the scenes.... Too much fun (and nice to read something light for a change). Barbara Everett, WA Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Psychology - Not Scripture For those wanting a pop-psychology quick fix to the complicated heart of a woman, maybe this book is for you. But if you're looking for biblically sound answers to the questions you have as a Christian woman - STEER CLEAR! While there are parts of the book that have merit, you have to wade through so much false teaching to get to the good stuff. You have to ask yourself - is it really worth it? The answer is "no" in my opinion, and my Pastor agreed. For those whose desire is to search the Scriptures for your answers I would recommend Beth Moore's "Breaking Free" or "A Woman's Heart, God's Dwelling Place" God Bless You. Summary: A goat's beard, a rusty nail, a single flake of oatmeal.... are things that you would better spend your hard earned cash on than this insipid book. "oohhh.... I'ma woman! All I wants is to be purty and have my knight in shining armor! Who needs to vote?!?!" This is why I despise most christian women. Summary: A True Inspiration In all the times we interpreted the scripture to mean the woman was less than the man, this book inspires woman to have an understanding that does not overshadow the role of the man but proves the importance of the woman. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Top ten least glamorous jobs Temperance Brennan must sometimes rethink her career choice as she wades into alligator infested water to snag a floating body. When she's being eaten by mosquitoes in a snaky swamp supervising the retrieval of a corpse, does she wonder what life would have been like if she'd chosen to be a plastic surgeon? Well, her faithful readers can rejoice in the fact that Temp chose forensic anthropology. Our girl is once again up to her armpits in muddy water, foul stenches, and dead bodies. She also seems to attract more than her share of men, both the romantic and the deadly varieties. Summary: "...the man in Dewees, the man in the trees, and the lady in the barrel..." After CROSS BONES, Reichs' eighth novel featuring Dr. Temperance Brennan, I honestly didn't know if I was going to continue to read the series. I really, REALLY didn't enjoy CROSS BONES. I'm somewhat of a Tempe addict, though, and I decided not to let--cliché warning--one bad apple spoil the whole bunch; I went out and picked up BREAK NO BONES on the day it was released. And now that I've finished reading Reichs' newest novel, it's not a purchase I regret. In BREAK NO BONES, Reichs is back on familiar ground. In this outing, her heroine, Dr. Temperance Brennan, is working with a group of UNCC students on Dewees Island--a barrier island off the coast of South Carolina--excavating the burial grounds of an Indian tribe who lived there long ago. The excavation is coming along nicely, until Tempe's students make a startling discovery at the edge of the dig site: a fully articulated skeleton, not nearly as old as the Indians they're there to study. In fact, this corpse is so recent it's attracting the flies. Since Charleston County's forensic anthropologist is out of the country, Tempe agrees to assist the coroner--her friend, Emma Rousseau--with identification of the remains. But before she's even had a chance to make her identification, another body is discovered: this one hanging from a tree in a state forest, a noose around its neck, the victim of an apparent suicide. Not long after, a third body washes up on the shore, stuffed in an oil drum in the fetal position, the remains of a cat clutched to its chest. After examining all three sets of remains, Tempe finds a startling commonality among them: a strange scalpel mark on the same vertebra of each victim. Upon further investigation, Tempe discovers that all three victims can be traced back to a free clinic for the poor, owned by a church headed by a charismatic local televangelist. What role, if any, does the free clinic play in the deaths? And why would anyone want to murder homeless people and bury their bodies in clandestine locations? Tempe, who thinks "death in anonymity is the ultimate insult," is determined to find out. And that's just her professional life! Her estranged husband, Pete, has arrived in Charleston on business, complete with Boyd the Chow and Birdie the cat, and he's bunking with her at her best friend's million-dollar beach house. To complicate matters, Detective Andrew Ryan (and his Viking blue eyes, of course) has also come to Charleston--and he's less-than-pleased to discover that his girlfriend has another houseguest. To top it all off, Emma Rousseau--the Charleston County Coroner and Tempe's friend for years--is very sick, and she's only getting worse. Once again, Reichs is developing her heroine ingeniously, showing her readers two very different sides of Tempe: the side that's self-assured and all-business in the lab, as well as the uncertain, introspective side Tempe gives in to when she's alone. But let's get the not-so-good stuff out of the way first. Other reviewers here have called BREAK NO BONES well-paced, but I disagree. I thought the plot dragged unnecessarily in places, and the suspense was greatly lacking. In fact, the suspense felt somewhat forced; aside from a beer-bottle-throwing incident and a shooting that is later explained away, there's not too much to make you bite your nails in this one. The climax is brief and, well, anti-climactic; at a certain point in the novel, Reichs just stops hiding the "whodunit". Too many names to keep straight makes for muddied reading in some spots. Reichs' prose is characteristically staccato in this outing, which is distinctive, yes--but it gets old fast in BREAK NO BONES. But make no bones about it (pun intented); what's good about this novel outweighs the bad: beautiful, detailed descriptions of Charleston; a complicated, thoroughly relatable heroine; a poignant, symbolic ending; unflinching descriptions of crime scenes; cutting-edge research into timely topics. Reichs has definitely rebounded from the train wreck that was CROSS BONES. Let's face it: Only Kathy Reichs can make decomposing bodies appealing! Summary: Charming, as well as challenging This is my first Kathy Reichs novel, and now I wonder why I waited so long! Temperance Brennan is a sound, believable character with flaws, emotion, and a great sense of humor. "I abhorred Dupree's position. His goal was money, earned by any means that wouldn't get him indicted. Screw the rain forest, the wetlands, the seashore, the dunes, the culture that was here when the English arrived. Dickie Dupree would implode the Temple of Artemis if it stood where he wanted to slap up condos." Tempe Brennan, a feisty anthropologist working with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, is summoned to assist with an archaeological field school on Dewees, a barrier island north of Charleston, South Carolina. This was to be a pleasurable venture, as well as a return to familiar territory for Tempe. When a body is found in a makeshift grave during their dig, the story is off and running. As the body count grows, certain elements of each death are similar and start telling a story much deeper and more mysterious than originally surmised. When scalpel marks are found on bones from each of the victims, and vital tissues and organs are discovered to have been removed, the plot really takes off. Who could have done this? The causes of death are all unique. As local suspects are identified, and one by one dismissed from consideration, the reader must look beneath the surface information and seek out yet another probable suspect. What role does the free clinic play in all of this? Several paths lead to their door. Is the charismatic televangelist involved? We keep asking why. Who could gain from the deaths of homeless people? Kathy Reichs, a forensic anthropologist for the province of Quebec, shows her expertise through her protagonist. Her ninth book featuring Tempe Brennan provides international intrigue, friendship, a spot of romance, and perfect pace. The plot moves steadily as well as logically, while allowing the reader to absorb the critical elements as they're exposed. A creative, smart and fun whodunit, this book is sure to be a favorite among fans of "CSI," "Bones," "Crossing Jordan," and "Forensic Files." One of only 56 certified United States forensic anthropologists, she knows her stuff! Reichs has included the skills, technology and terminology that her readers have come to expect from her expertise in the anthropological and forensic fields of science. BREAK NO BONES will charm you, as well as challenge you. --- Reviewed by Margaret Fletcher Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: This book is a "must read". I wish I read this book 50 years ago. I am now a widow of one year and wish for good marriages for my daughters, friends and relative. I've given away many of these books to bless relatives and friends with understanding of their spouses. This book is an eye opener. Summary: Great information I enjoyed reading this book. I thought it contained a lot of useful information, a lot of which I had never thought about before. I feel like it really did give me a peek into the lives of men that I did not have access to previously. This book is written from a Christian perspective, so you should be aware of that if you are not a Christian. However, the information is valuable, and you can easily read around those parts if they do not mesh with your beliefs. I also liked this book because it was short and to the point (you can read it in 1 1/2-2 hours) and also classy. No gross language or vulgar descriptions here. If you are interested in working on yourself to improve your marriage, I highly recommend this book. Summary: Excellent, insightful and highly recommended! I want to support the author that men since the Stone Age till today have proven that they at least deserve our respect, care and appreciation! Of course, this does NOT mean that you have to play the role of a wife-doormat! This book is mostly for married people and it should be out of discussion that you and the man next to you love, care and support each other. If this is not the case why did you marry or why do you stay in a dead relationship? I am shocked every time probably because I am a PH. D in Sexuality that wives "fake orgasms". If you CANNOT experience orgasms with him there are many things that can be done. For example I high recommend to all of my clients scientist Ritz' bestseller "Scientificlly guaranteed multiple orgasms and ultimate sex". However, if you fake your orgasms then you do it CONSCIOUSLY and there are NO excuses for that! This book does NOT preach to do anything like that because this is the MOST STUPID THING A WIFE CAN DO! This book shows successfully that men are down-to-earth, quite predictable creatures and it is not at all difficult to deal and manage with them. Moreover, men LOVE straight and to the point discussions. Only a small percentage will refuse to listen to you, if you want more in bed, in your relationship, etc. So use it and make sure that both of you get what you want and have a great cordial, sexual, mental and social life together! I think that this is the main message of this excellent book. I am a successful PH.D., mother, wife, housekeeper and lover. That's why I give 5-stars to "For Women Only" and Ritz' book. They can help you a lot. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: This was pure Heaven Fannie Flagg has got a talent for writing great books that are enjoyed by everyone. This book is no exception. She is a master at her craft. I can't get enough of the wit and charm that casts into her books. She is great at putting together a group of the most unique but lovable characters. Another book that I read that also had great characters was The North Kingdom by Jordan N. Danniels. Buy both books for a humor filled summer-I definitely did-it's pure Heaven! Summary: Heart-warming & Endearing I have read all of Fannie Flagg's books and this one is just as good as her others, maybe better. It's so full of spirit, good cheer and optimism. It asks the timeless questions of why we are here and what happens to us when we die. No one really knows, but Elner, the main character in this book, may have the answer for all of us. Elner, Norma's aunt, was up in the fig tree to get some figs to make a preserve when she disturbed a wasp's nest and got stung and fell off the ladder. This is not the first time she has done that. She has fallen off the ladder other times and drove her niece, Norma, crazy and worried with fear. This time, Elner was knocked out cold. This is just the beginning of an adventure for the townsfolks of Elmwood Springs, Missouri. Elner is taken to Kansas City to the hospital there. Norma and her husband, Macky, followed behind. Ruby and Tots, the local hairdresser takes care of things at Elner's house and the stories just keep on flowing. Bittersweet and heart-warming, it made me, the reader, wish that people would think of me the same way they did Elner. And not only that, it's a reminder to take life a little bit on the easy and slow side because you never know when the last day will come. It may be too late to do all the things you wish you could do or have said. This book may have a moral to it but it's so wonderfully written. It's a perfect book to read on the front porch drinking your iced tea and relaxing for a day or two. Flagg's writing is always humane and lyrical. You just know these characters as well as you know yourself because you are human as they are. Life doesn't have to be as hard as it sounds Summary: Another Exellent book from this author... Once again Fannie Flagg has brought to life lovable, wonderful characters in CAN'T WAIT TO GET TO HEAVEN. Nobody writes these types of charaters better than Flagg (Ann B. Ross is a close second.) This book, sort of an IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE for the new millenium, tells the story of Elner Shimfissle's death and return to life. Her journey to Heaven is priceless. Imagine finding out that God is, in fact, an elderly married couple. There are more serious underlying themes here, such as how one person's life effects so many others, and to live life to the fullest because you never know when it might end, etc. If you are a fan of Ms. Flaggs' previous books, you will not be disappointed in this one. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Brilliantly constructed tragicomedy What if you could go back in time and meet your future husband or wife as a child? How would that change your relationship? The Time Traveler's Wife is more of a love story than generally suits my taste in fiction, and that is why I cannot give it five stars. However, if a beautifully constructed, evocatively written tale of enduring love couched within a highly paradoxical (yet central) premise of time travel is your cup of tea, then you cannot get better than this. The characters, emotions, and family dynamics ring true to life; the story is seamlessly developed through multiple timelines; and the writing is adept enough to make me feel like I was eavesdropping on the devoted married couple. (Maybe that is what made me a little uncomfortable with the "love story" aspect. I will admit there were a few occasions where I just wanted to skip pages because I did not want to know that level of detail about these people. Clare's sexual awakening--regretably told from Henry's point of view--is one example.) Flawlessly constructed, at times almost painfully evocative, but always highly original, this novel offers much to consider about the enduring nature of love. Summary: I Love This Book!!! This is an excellent book. It kept me consumed with it the entire time I was reading it. Like nothing else I have ever read. Love it! Summary: Save it for a long weekend.... This is a truly original novel, both fascinating and endearing...though he travels through time, Henry is otherwise a fairly average Joe. However, I do recommend reading this book in as few sittings as possible. Every couple of pages the story leaps backward or forward through time, and if you leave the book sitting for too long, you may have to re-read certain portions to get back up to speed (I began dog-earing passages that seemed particularly important). I work full-time and am a law student in the evenings, so it took me a month or longer to get through the novel....I wish I had saved it for a long weekend, as I fear I may have missed some of the finer details...but I thoroughly enjoyed it, nonetheless. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Women's Best Friend 'What You Wear Can Change Your Life is a book that husbands need to make sure their wives never lay their hands on. The book is authored by the famous twosome, Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine.Using their own less than perfect bodies as examples, they give tips on the do's and don't's of dressing. They talk about bra sizes, stressing the need to wear the correct size so as to give the appearance of a youthful thrust to even the most deflated breasts, at the same time showcasing a waist that would make any man look up from his paper and coffee. The book is truly a woman's best friend. Summary: You can change how you look today, without losing a pound or spending a fortune WHAT YOU WEAR CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE is an informative guide that is highly recommended for women who want to know how to dress well for their body type. Though I don't normally think self-deprecation is a good thing, in the case of WHAT YOU WEAR CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE, I think the authors, Trinny Woodhall and Susannah Constantine use it well. Because their commentary about body shapes, grooming and wardrobe choices is biting, Woodhall and Constantine could run the risk of turning off readers by sounding like they are attacking us. But because they reveal their own body and wardrobe challenges, it is easier to relate to the authors and as a result it is also easier to take their common sense approach to looking great, regardless of our size, budget or figure flaws. Divided into 10 logical chapters that focus on defining your shape and culling your wardrobe to finding the right accessories and traveling in style, WHAT YOU WEAR CAN CHANGE YOU LIFE is a great book that features dozens of full color photographs that fully illustrate the authors' observations about which clothes work best for which body shapes. Though I have been interested in fashion since I was 13 and at this point could easily write the articles that I find in women's magazines, I still learned lots by reading this book. What made it most rewarding of all is that I didn't even have to go shopping to take advantage of Woodhall and Constantine's suggestions. Instead I just looked into my closet, plucked out the clothing combinations the authors suggested and the first person I saw gushed, "have you lost weight? You look great." I'd call that an impulse self-help book buy that delivers instant results. - Regina McMenamin Summary: This book is a keeper! I bought this book after seeing people's look being transformed on Ophra. I enjoyed Trinny and Suzanne's humor. I liked their system of determining if you are large or small boned and what to wear accordingly. I LOVE the color coordinating section. I thought I had a good color sense but now I'm putting new colors together that I'd never tried before and they are really great. I use the color section when I'm planning a beading project aswell. The one area I wasn't so happy with was about new make up products I ordered the heated lash curler, face primer and lip wax. I didn't feel that I got much bang for the $80 bucks I spent. But the money I spent on body shapers was worth it and I appreciate the pictures showing how much difference they make since I look different standing up straight in front of the mirror than when I'm moving about in the world. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: delicious potluck anne tyler's world of casseroles and kooky children is once again tossed onto our plates in this vulgar tale. i enjoyed her courageous attack on political correctness. exposing the absurdities of the arrival party and the relentless buckling on the pacifier problem, ms. tyler wages a brutal assault. this is not material for the weak of heart. i was fond of her portrayal of dave, the father of bitsy. ms. tyler scribbles him out as a pathetic, groveling and hopeless codependant. he is entirely incapable of living beyond his literal vision. hence, he edits out all the potentates of life in the glory years. rather than seek out tail and companionship, he engages in low self esteem pity, and settles his sights on the most immediate lady out there, that being the elder iranian. his sad ritual of reading newspaper stories aloud is one of the more repulsive acts that ms. tyler has ever created. this pile of words will keep you riveted while you await the next disappointment from this sorry cast of characters. Summary: Revealing Story of Insiders and Outsiders Searching For Their Niche Anne Tyler is the master of creating characters so real you can laugh with and cry with, be disappointed by but love unconditionally. In this novel she connects two such families, one American and one Iranian-American, by a chance meeting at Baltimore's airport where both families are awaiting adopted daughters from Korea. Bitsy Donaldson, the American mother, is an organizer and planner and conceives the idea of an arrival party each year to celebrate the day both girls, Jin-Ho and Sooki (later Americanized to Susan), arrived in America. The families are quite different, drawn together only by August 15, 1997, the date they both received Korean daughters. Their differences are the basis of this book, the exploration of the outsider in all of us and the drive to be accepted. Bitsy's family is traditional American, never doubting their way is the right way, but very politically correct about accepting the traditions of foreigners. Susan's adopted parents, Ziba and Sami, want to fit in and be accepted as Americans on the one hand, while laughing and mocking American ways on the other. Although they grew up in America. they have always been "outsiders" and continue to embellish on that by adopting a Korean baby. Perhaps they felt that by Americanizing her name and clothing they would make her an insider. The Donaldsons, however, are intrigued by their baby's other-world culture and embrace it without realizing how they are making her an outsider in her own family. But beyond the parents and the children, this is the story of Susan's paternal grandmother, Maryam Yazdan, the ultimate stranger in a strange land. Although she has been in America for most of her adult life, she feels removed and not part of her adopted country and yet, she knows that she would be as out of place back in her birth country. Tyler weaves Maryam into a love story, very touching and poignant in its portrayal of love in the golden years after the death of a long-time spouse. Will the outsider be able to accept an insider or will that insider destroy the relationship by constantly reminding her of her foreignness? Anne Tyler has a beautiful gift and it is that she can create characters that seem so real, you forget they are only fictional. In this book particularly, I felt as if the Donaldsons and the Yazdans were my neighbors and I loved every minute I spent in their homes. Also, if you ever indulged in the childhood pastime of digging to China, you will fall in love with the very clever title of this book. Summary: Dig It! Maybe it is because I recently returned from a trip to China where there were two precious adopted babies on the flight; but, whatever the reason, I found DIGGING TO AMERICA deeply affecting. For anyone who has, or has had, a family, this fictional account breathes believable life into these two families, their members, their problems, and their joys. I would recommend this book simply for Anne Tyler's writing style which I have always found moving. For anyone contemplating adopting an Asian baby (nearly always a girl), I think it is a "must" read. Summary: |
